I think the anti-China hysteria is horrible. China is not the USSR. At the same time, though, imagine if we _were_ talking about the USSR. Saying that you have to use non-Soviet-controlled infrastructure for your speech is not a restriction on what you can say.

It sounds to me--a non-American non-lawyer--that the government could pass a law saying no app is allowed to collect data on its users, but they don't want to, because that would interfere with all the American apps that are doing that for commercial reasons.

This ban is stupid. I usually don't use that word for laws and such. It is stupid because it is largely unenforceable. How many different VPNs operate in the USA? I can think of 3. Useless. Stupid. The Constitution, ratified and signed, is written in English. In Canada they have french and English written into their law, in both French and English.
