Hi Rob, I'm about to take a trip to Bhutan and have left getting a video camera (other than the iPhone 14pro I've already got) to shoot landscapes and wildlife with till the last minute. I've got a budget of about £700, and was wondering if the XF-105 (which I can get for about £450 2nd-hand) is still a good option? I'm unsure as to what memory cards this camcorder uses and whether or not it would connect to a Rhode mike I'd be borrowing from a friend. Thoughts?

Hi. If you’re ok with shooting in full HD and not 4k then the Canon XF105 is most definitely still a great choice. Yes you can plug in any external mic since the camera has two XLR inputs. I used mine with a Rode NTG2. The camera uses compact flash cards which are very robust (not prone to damage as much as an SD card might be while travelling.) The image quality is superb and meets BBC TV broadcast standards.

It's an 8 bit camera by the way. 10 bit isn't available, not even via HDMI.

It is a great camera indeed. Between LS300 and sigma fp, i can't lean on either. One tops in IQ and the other in ease of use.

Very nice footage. Did you ever consider to deliver not in Rec709 but in HDR 1000nits, instead. That would catapult this exact footage to the next level -.)

@@coldwellr You can use any footage for HDR delivery that has enough dynamic range, such as HLG, Log, etc. Often, even Rec709-like footage works fine.

No adapter needed as the Meike T2.2 has M4/3 mount 😊 Perfect for the GH5!

The Z90 is widely considered to be the perfect documentary camera! Very high quality Zeiss zoom lens, 1 inch sensor, ND filters, XLR audio, broadcast codecs - I highly recommend it for documentary run-and-gun work.

Great example of the quality the Sony Z90 can produce. Too many videos of people shaking the camera around as it's a camcorder. Beautifully executed, stable shots and lovely locations - thanks for sharing!
