I just found you today and I am inspired to get a tenor recorder and learn with you. I like lots of coffee too. Do you think that will help me learn faster?

My teacher advised me to sing tunes, especially Irish music with all its accents and swings. I think it's useful 😊

I'm still waiting for the two wooden sopranos I ordered from Ukraine (both traditional, a sopilka and a telenka) but shit... I was buying strings for my classical guitar and somehow an alto recorder from Thomann landed in my order. Cheaper than any of the string sets. :/

The catch with swinging the hand to go from F# to G# on the bottom is that certain plastic recorders are too sticky, which means you can't slide your hands or your fingers across the surface without it catching onto your fingers/hands. The Aulos 509B comes to mind. Even the Yamaha 312B and the Zen-On G1A with the matt finish and the semi-matt finish, respectively, still have slick-looking, but sticking F# and G# holes. I can't slide my fingers on that. Anyway, I am not at a point when I am working on the right hand fingering with my teachers yet.

(1) As a person who has played guitar for years and wanted to get a wind instrument sound into my home recordings, I am thrilled to have stumbled across the simple, noble recorder. I....(2) live in Japan where kids absolutely still learn the recorder in elementary and junior high school. In fact, that's how I started my journey when I found a bunch of school recorders being discarded. I grabbed eight of them! Of course, they were cleaned thoroughly before I began. (3) Speaking of trash, the Guardian! edit: Sorry for calling recorder: "simple". "Simple but not easy" might be a better description.

Why is it called a recorder? You can’t record anything with it.

How beautiful. It’s so sad that so few British people practice or even know their own ancient traditions. Keep this beauty alive!

Hi Sarah! I LOVE your videos. I have a flute performance degree but a torn rotator cuff and surgery has convinced me to become a recorder player. I am loving ALMOST every moment of playing the recorder . Those high notes……. Hmmm. Can’t hit a high G# on my new Mullenhauer soprano recorder to save my life. Can go higher…but can’t hit the G#. What? My real question of the day is: What is the correct water/ dish washing liquid combo that I should use to help with the condensation. Don’t want to damage anything with too much dish soap. Thanks!

My go to is "sleep on it." I will work on something to a point, but acknowledge my brain needs to do its undercover work before anything progresses. It has lessened the frustration a lot!

I was warming up my flute to practice, when I saw this video, and it was so helpfull for me already today!!!! Thank you, Sarah! ❤ So, I guess marking in the breath is somewhere between steps 3 and 4, where I'm paying attention to where the fraze ends, so where to breathe while playing through the piece, and marking them in in step four.

I have been playing guitars since 1989. And yes, I had a break back in 1999, when I had to bring my master's certificate from the university, majoring in musicology. And of course I have had some recorders since, say, 1993. Last autumn, I began really to play them. And when playing now, I feel as if I was a beginner. Picking up the recorder, I forget how to sight read. My fingers don't do things I want them to do when I play these easy, small tunes. However, beginning with a new instrument after decades of playing, studying, composing, thinking about and writing, teaching and so on, it is so relieving to be a novice, a total beginner and Sunday player again. I don't have to be a virtuoso, I don't have to be good enough to be a solo player. I don't have to please anybody but myself. And if I don't satisfy myself, nothing happens. If I don't have fun, I can do something else.

When i sang in a large choral ensemble, our director would often work backward -- working on a later passage - then the one before that so when you got to the later passage, it was already familar.

Something I like to do and encourage my students to do once they're playing longer pieces of music is to start by learning the beginning and the end and then work their way backwards from the end until they know the entire piece. Then we can work on any problem spots and continue to refine it.

Another tip or two or 3: Play with a metronome and increase the speed bit by bit, starting much slower than the desired final speed. This will help your counting and your technique. Mark the speed you left off at with a pencil. Mark logical sections and start at the end of the piece, working each section, moving closer to the beginning each time. You also can use this trick to help memorization. After you’ve worked on a piece for a while, set it aside for at least a week. You’ll be surprised at how much progress you can make after returning to it fresh.

Finally going to learn to play an instrument that suits me. Tried guitar but lack dexterity. Same for piano. Brass is too loud. I need a wind instrument like the recorder. I think it is beautiful in its simplicity. I am going to shop for one. I am going to learn to play the Brandenburg concerto if it is the last thing I ever do. Love you teaching style. Subscribed!

When you said "if you have to use your knee," I was like "if you have to use your what now?" I looked into it and what a can of worms I opened. I had seen "bell" on some fingering charts, and I assumed it was some weird stuff that didn't apply to me. But the 8th hole?! 😱 I had never even heard of it. Of course I found a hilarious (and informative!) video of yours from 7 years ago that taught me all about it: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/kHWSpo6jj6iVjn0.htmlsi=mNNX7TxYYsYz2jQx This is great because just the other day I looked at a piece of music and it went down to B, so I didn't think I could play it. Thanks, Sarah!

I love Irish music. I recently acquired a copy of O'Neil's Music of Ireland. 1000+ pages 1800+ jigs, reels, hornpipes, polka's, barn dances, and waltzes. (Heaven!) I've challenged myself to learn one new song per week. Your tip 1 is what has been most helpful. If I can't find a recording I create the score with a composition app called ABC Notes ( a more simplistic version of MuseScore) which will play it back in a basic way. Also helps with Tip 2 and 5. Tip 10 is also GOLDEN. 32 songs down 1000+ to go.

Oh I just jump right into sight reading a new piece until I hit the inevitable wall of "hold the fuck up". After 26 yrs of playing, I've earned the right to do so! And then I go back to the beginning and properly start picking the piece apart. Occasionally I'll listen to a reference recording if I'm thoroughly confused by the sheet music right of the gate.
