Your right in that he approached the moose and never should have done that, among other actions like attempting to scare and push her. However he was taking actions he "thought" would get her to vacate the trail. Certainly wrong, but simple mistakes, just like the one you made in "turning around". There was not enough room, and attempting to do so likely gets you stuck, if not just immobile long enough where she could easily become aggressive and you are now in a worst situation... He actually had great "ethics" in the sense he did not want to shoot her, even firing a warning shot, but the problem is his actions all but forced it.

To clarify a few things. One: Scavengers most likely got to the carcass much later on so no. The moose did not go to waste. Two: The bullets that hit the moose damage the hide, thus lowering the quality of the pelt. Either way. The guy didn't HAVE to skin the moose or take it home, it also is an adult cow. Not a baby. Who cares if he didn't take advantage and took the meat and skin home. Be greatful this man is alive and ok. Moose are very dangerous cretures and can\will kill you. It is true that either scavengers or people will take advantage of this meat. However I am not sure what you are talking about regarding damaging the hide, quality of the pelt, or even that he could have taken it home. Taking any part of that moose would have been illegal here. Additionally, if he was actually hunting, by law he is required to take every usable part of this moose. It is also true that moose are dangerous, which is one of many reasons why you don't approach them. And while many people are irrationally upset, they are not entirely wrong. As this video starts, this was a normal moose sighting you can expect while riding in moose country and of no danger. He created the danger by approaching, trying to scare and push her. Had he simply stopped as soon as he saw her, then this likely works itself out almost every time. interesting you attack others for their inaccuracies, but you yourself clearly don't have experience otherwise you would recognize this... @@OK-zo3cq Your comment "encountering a moose is an instant danger" shows you not only have no knowledge of moose, you also have remedial if any experience in the outdoors. When he first saw this moose, he was at least 25-30 yards away. Had he simply stopped at that point he was far enough away he would not have been a threat to her, and she would likely leave on her own had he given her the space and time to do so. Instead, he approached a wild animal which you should pretty much never do, and approached a moose, which is something you never do. But there is no "instant danger" every time you "encounter" a moose. They couldn't care less about people and will avoid, or ignore people until you make the mistake of threatening them by getting too close, scaring pushing; pretty much everything you saw him do. At that point, yes, they will often become aggressive and his actions all but forced her to attack. Given your comments, I recommend sticking to the Zoo in whatever city you live in, as it's pretty evident you don't know how to act in the outdoors. Too many Anthony Hopkins movies I guess...

@@SethACook Why would a moose not "care about a warning shot"? Warning shots commonly work with animals. They don't know what a firearm is, or what it means to them, but they do get frightened by very loud noises. The noise is quite traumatizing to an animal, and why you point it in their general direction so they will receive maximum concussion, noise and violence of the shot. The problem in this video is he waited far too long, where his actions agitated her far too much, so when he finally took it, it failed. An earlier shot likely works, as does other actions he could have taken. But like him, you just learned that moose will become aggressive when threatened. So simply, don't threaten them by approaching, attempting to scare, push and trap yourself within feet of them and you won't have to think about all these complex actions because it would not have been an issue. Stop as soon as you see an animal, give them space and time to leave without threat and they will do it almost every time.

Even an earlier warning shot had a better chance of working, but a bit over aggressive considering plan B existed. In the end, never approach wildlife, especially dangerous animals like moose and you will likely never have a complex fight for your life. Regarding moose specifically, they are unlike almost all other ungulates in that rather than flee, they will often become aggressive when threatened. So, don't approach, get to close, push or try to scare them and all will be well.

While moose are not territorial, they are dangerous and unlike other ungulates, will often become aggressive when they, their calf, or rights to the ladies are threatened. They won't approach you from a distance with intent to become aggressive. This is why you never approach, or attempt to scare them. keep in mind guys that this moose is probably around 1 - 2 years old, this moose is not even close to fully grown, a fully grown moose is absolutely huge, you should always keep your distance from a moose until it moves, what this guy did was (no offence to him) pretty stupid, you should not take risks like this, however in his situation where he was already close to it and it was continuing to charge him he did the right thing, even if it was his negligence that likely caused this in the first place I'm glad he didn't get hurt

@BPRescue 17 днів тому
This was a mature shiras cow of 3-4 years old closing in on 800 lbs that is considered full grown and capable of birthing calves. Size can be difficult to judge for those without experience, but also due to the wide angle action cam he is using. You are correct however in never approaching moose and keeping your distance, but also that this guy created the danger with many mistakes, the first approaching it. He should have simply stopped as soon as he saw her and they will almost always move on given time and space. You noticed I stated "mistakes". This is because while his actions were wrong, he did them in an effort to get her to vacate the trail and clearly did not want to shoot or harm her. He made many mistakes such as approaching, attempting to scare, push and trapping himself within feet of her. Any one of these mistakes is enough to threaten her and create an aggressive response, even just a bluff charge like her first charge, all together they gave her no other choice than to attack him. As for the "right thing" in an instance where you find yourself too close and in his situation, I believe that is to mean shooting her. I will agree that he did everything right as soon as he started shooting, and in reality he was legitimate in shooting her after she attacked him, frankly just before. The problem as I, and you implied, he did everything wrong before which forced this. It is true human life is a priority and he was justified in shooting her when he did. But it is beyond sad because like most attacks on people occur due to the person intentionally approaching the animal. As this video starts, this was a normal moose sighting one can expect while riding in moose country with no danger. Stop as soon as you see any animal in the trail, wait to see what happens, then take action based on that. Almost all animals will avoid you given the opportunity. Stopping gives them that opportunity, but also you more time to think of better avoidance actions in the event she were to continue walking his direction.
