Once the adrenaline and chaos wears off, men who survived are, no, not even just traumatized- all the damage they've been ignoring DURING the battle hits them all at once. The numerous TBIs they've taken but been able to keep fighting through suddenly are felt. It does not feel like victory, despite being undeniably so.

this kind of war is so bizarre. they literally stand there and wait, taking turns firing at each other. then, after a few volleys back and forth, they just both charge at the same time?? It's like- nice and orderly they march in. nice and orderly, they take turns just blasting each other. then all of a sudden they charge in and it's basically 0th century melee combat. no wonder the thought of war as a chess time, even by the time the First World War happened.
