"She makes it look like it's her country." Because it is her country. "She makes juice from berries? This is fake." What's impossible part? You mean collecting berries potentially from someone else's forest? We have this thing called Right to Roam in europe and in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Estonia we have purest form of it.

Great place to start - the beginning! This is often called the Early Middle Ages now. It used to be called the Dark Ages. The terms are mostly interchangable. They left out the later part of this period where Anglo-Saxon England consolidates further but is then conquered again by Cnut (Canute) and then ruled by his son for a bit before the AS regain control. Next comes the beginning of the Middle Ages proper as William the Conqueror kicks off the Norman period which also includes his 2 sons as monarchs and then also King Stephen, in whose reign the kingdom slides into The Anarchy until the Plantagenet dynasty takes over with Henry II. Some people consider the Plantagents as Normans but that's a bit of a stretch. The Plantagenets are a long-lived dynasty that eventually finish out the Middle Ages with the Wars of the Roses (dynastic infighting) which culminates in the Tudors and the beginning of the Early Modern Period.

I think the suggestion that America is working for us is really that you are looking after us and that is hard work. He is on stage as a pub landlord who drinks. Maybe the audience is placed with the question. It is obviously rehearsed. He is clearly not daft. As a young lad in the early '50's I was impressed by the Empire. Now at 80 I am still impressed. Collecting possessions was a European hobby and it was a thing. The UK did very well. Times have changed, thankfully. I appreciate your intelligent and perceptive questions. Keep at it. Thank you.

The Vulcan was the only aircraft that had the range to carry out the mission. During air refuelling, The oil doesn't get replenished. When the oil runs out the aircraft id coming down, one way or another. Jets on an aircraft carrier wouldn't have worked, as Argentine jets would attack the carrier before it could get close enough to conduct the strike. The WAS no other base closer than Wideawake Airfield on Ascension Island, that could support the Vulcan and the tanker required. Ascension Island was STILL 4,000 miles from the Falkland Islands!! Air refuelling wasn't as common in the 80s as it is now, and Vulcans certainly hadn't done it in years! The whole story is told in MUCH more detail in the book Vulcan 607.

I'm not from the U.K. either, but if that magnificent marriage of words and music doesn't speak to you across national lines I'm not sure what further information would be relevant to making it do so. It's certainly national anthem worthy.

You do a great job and ask perceptive questions. At the time our military capabilities had been greatly reduced over the previous decades. Many over here questioned the wisdom of this policy. Hence the old and relatively obsolete equipment. However it was a very brave endeavour that ended in a victory, but at a cost of many lives. That's war unfortunately. Your contribution added to the enjoyment of this video. Thanks! PS I think that several South America countries were approached for assistance but political realities got in the way for them.

The answer to your closing question : HOW ? It probably boiled down to the size of the British fleet which was twice the size of the whole of the rest of the world's fleets. And there was an instinctive desire to discover and trade with other nations. You should bear in mind that this mind set to establish an Empire was played out by most European nations. The UK turned out to be better at that 'game' than the rest. That's how it was then !

8:34 This is the stvp1d3st thing I've ever heard. United States is not the center of the world, the Mongols didn't were the first to have "elections", even tho they didn't elected Genghis, the meritocracy was ancient too, and wth stop comparing USA to everything. Meritocracy is a myth, and democracy is many times full of flaws.

For me, as an comissioned officer of the Finnish Navy, the two absolutely most important pieces of music here are the Finlandia Hymn (or the Finlandia Anthem), and the Jaegers march, both composed by Jean Sibelius, maybe the most prolific composer in the World during the early years of the 20th century (and I can assure you, the version here is the original one, not the church hymn 😉) . Actually, my son is named after the Kullervo mentioned in the Jaegers march (Kullervo is an antihero in our national epic Kalevala). A "fun" fact about the jaegers march: during the 1910's we were under the rule of the Russian Empire, and it was a bad decade for us. We had some brave young men, who took the long road to Prussia to aquire some military training, aiming to eventually claim our freedom, as we indeed did. They had a contest of writing the best march song. The Jaegers March won that competition, and the lyrics were bootlegged to Sibelius in Finland. It took only a couple of days from Sibelius to compose the music to that song, while he was fighting against the tears of pride, according to himself. And I can't blame him.

Here's another quite a meaningful song for us: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/nJOjpmt6nIiQpKs.htmlsi=gyvPOhLbTBu3uR18 This was the song we sang to the president of Finland when he comissioned us as officers. A moment I will never forget.

Re your observation about the ending. As a youngster in the 50's, when a film finished the audience would stand while the national anthem played; only exiting at the ending. I don't think that happens now. PS I love your videos and the carefully considered responses. Thanks.

One strength that is forgotten is the hygiene of the Royal Navy. Poo was chucked overboard and handwashing was essential. It sounds obvious, but wasn't then. Other countries would keep defecate on board and not clean, where the British prioritised it. The Royal Navy (and British Army) believed the smell made you ill. They were wrong, of course, it is bacteria. But it was good enough as it meant a degree (low by modern standards, but better than nothing) of cleanliness. The other major powers thought it was dues vult - "god willing". Therefore, did not clean defecate away. Infection was many many times lower in Royal Navy than any other country's then sea service. This allowed Britain to gain critical mass - by taking one place, it made it easier to invade the next, and were always sea ready. They then showered riches on local leaders (unlike Spain, France who imposed their own). This meant the British could rule 1 billion Indians with 66,000 British troops.

It says something about the queen and our special relationship that they would play the star spangled banner at Buckingham palace, considering that the star spangled banner is about how America refused to lower our flag in surrender to the British during overwhelming bombings on our civilian fort.
