Before you plug it into your skull or pod you can right click on it to see info to see what it does.

You can buy better guns and ammo from the market just like that magnate. But be careful where you buy them at.. sometimes they can be in another system or many jumps away or even in Low Security space.

Turn on your shield hardener to resist some of the incoming damage.

Loot those wrecks! Good stuff in them.

Fun to just go exploring. You only need 1 afterburner for an engine on your ship.

If you have your torch equipped you can put it onto a wall and pick it up after you cleared the room you are going in.

When in doubt right click; almost everything in the game has a context menu. You're not alone in being confused about the exploration mission though, I've seen a lot of people have trouble with it. You found the anomaly training site, but needed to right click it and warp to the location. Alternatively, you would have found it in the panel with all the green and red in it, and then would have been able to click on the green arrow. (Once in the site, there's a cargo can at the location, and your proof of discovery is in the can.) The mission with the vigil will have the ship blow up, so don't fit it with anything, and you might as well insure it too. The objective of the mission from a game design perspective, is to get the player used to losing their ships. Also, civilian guns don't use ammo, but you're better off replacing them with guns that do when you get the chance, because civilian guns do very little damage. Anyway, I hope you're enjoying yourself. EVE may seem daunting at times, but the discovery is a large part of the fun.

If you hover your mouse over your gun it will tell you what your "optimal" to smack them down. Your shields will very slowly repair themselves unless you have an "active" shield repair which will drain your capacitor - energy. You are on your way. Happy hunting.
