The Camp would have to be huge, which in many ways could restrict where you could setup (unless they used sub camps)? could you imagine having to corral 15000 + animals in one night, must be pretty smelly if your down wind! I think the physical condition of soldiers of that time was probably higher than today but I would think life expectancy was lower because of inferior medical care and susceptibility of catching diseases and effects of flu, injuries etc..., in the empire soldiers were required to carry upwards of 60Kg of their own baggage plus their shield and weapons, although in this video they would have only to carry they own weapons and shields. Depending on the weather, season, terrain, delays, and cohesion I think a march of about 12-20 miles is about realistic, with a one hour break for another stint which could equate to a 24-40 mile journey in 9 hours. I walked across the downs in the isle of Wight for a total distance of 15 miles with a 15 kilogram backpack of food and water, in hilly, uneven rocky public paths some of which were slippery, with hiking boots, and a light windproof jacket in early spring which took me 4 hours I was 52 years old when I did that! I wish I could go back in time and be a fly on the wall!
