The gas formed is not nitrogen!!!! The reaction involved formation of HIDROGEN gas. Hidrogen is highly flammable and the temperature need to be controlled because the Hidrogen formed can ignite. This operation must be carried in an well ventilate place and in small quantities for safety reasons.

I don’t think the tester needs a 12v battery. Seems excessive to me. Actually, I think it could be designed to work without a battery at all.

This type of mosfet needs a positive charge on the gate in order for it to remain in the (ON) position, and it needs a negative charge to remain in the (OFF) position. The two diodes are connected in the opposite position, so if you touch one of them, it passes a positive charge, and if you touch the other, it passes a negative charge.
