Hi Alex - one thing I notice about this family project in Portugal: they did lots of research before they started, and you can do that too. If you haven't grown your own food etc before, you can learn a lot by doing some volunteering at other established Food Forests. Or you could start a mini project with others right where you are, on some donated land (local council?). Councils are more interested/helpful with this than they used to be! Doing it this way means you get solid experience in all kinds of aspects before you leave your current home base, plus you make excellent contacts with anyone who might like to come and *help your project* later. The WWOOF model provides basic accommodation in exchange for free labour, there are other similar sites to connect with likeminded helpers. Good luck!

I've rented a 50sqm plot of land from the council about 4 years ago and I've been growing vegetables using the no-dig method. I guess that they sold their house and put that into their new homestead.. But really, that is just a guess and nothing more. For all you know, they have inherited.
