My pleasure. 🙂 I was hoping it didn't feel too rushed. I had tried it 3 times already and had run out of memory each time. I finally got this take with just a minute or two to spare!

When do I change na for an or nam for am, or use an t- ? So far, you and duolingo have the only recipe for making this language kinda stick in my noggin'.

This is also a line from Runrig's song "Skye": "Tìr nam beanntann àrda" :) btw - is there a difference between "àrd" and "àrda" in this particular context?
@plixypl0x
@plixypl0x Рік тому
Please wait for Jason's response but I believe "àrd" is tall and "àrda" is high/lofty
@GaelicwithJason
@GaelicwithJason Рік тому
Tall and high/lofty are more or less the same thing, in my eyes. Maybe 'tall' is less poetic - although it depends who is using it! Well spotted, Karolina! *Àrda* is the same as 'àrd' here, it's just plural. 🙂

Halò Jason ! Tha mi duilich ach… I don’t understand something with « the » in Gaelic and it’s driving me crazy. I realize this video is for plurals but for singular I don’t get when to put “an” or “am” with no lenition after or when to put the “a’” with the lenition. For instance in my exercices, I find we say “Tha na seudan aig a’ mhèirleach” but “Tha am mèirleach anns a’ phríosan”. I don’t understand the logic behind it, does it have to do with the position of “mèirleach” in the sentence ? If it’s the first word using “the” you don’t lenite but then you lenite all the subsequent ones with “a’ ….” ? Cuidich mi airson sin ach tha mi cho mì-chinnteach 🙏🏻 tapadh leat !!

@JD thank you so so much!. What a surprise to receive a reply from the teacher direct! I'm just learning gaelic and I need the structures to accompany the learning by repetition of sentences, as I have a language background (Italian translater, interpreter and teacher, living in Scotland, with active German and good knowledge of Latin with French and ancient Greek thrown into the cauldron) If I am to learn this language, so old and archaic in so many ways, I must have the rules too, not just the sentences to learn by rota. I don't have the time nor the years left, I'm nearly 60, for my brain to do that naturally. I need all the metalinguistic help I can get if I'm to master this language and speak comfortably. Thank you, 'cause your lessons help me to do that with real teaching and fun thrown in for good measure. I'll have to start at the beginning and not just dip in when I get the notifications!

Which Dialect of Gaelic Language are you Teaching? Irish-Gaelic, Scotch-Gaelic, or Welsh-Gaelic?
@wbrehaut
@wbrehaut Рік тому
"Gaelic" with no qualification always means Scottish Gaelic. The Irish language is known as either “Gaeilge” or "Irish" and can't properly be called "Gaelic". And neither can the Welsh language, "Cymric" (in English) or in Welsh "Cymraeg" or "Gymraeg", which is a Celtic language and not a Gaelic language.
