A two-week tour through a paddler's paradise: Quetico Provincial Park in northern Ontario, Canada. 50 lakes, 60 portages, and 100s of fish. The longest trip of our lives by time and distance challenged us in new ways, leaving us with memories that will last a lifetime.
MAPS
The Paddle Planner website is a phenomenal resource for Quetico and elsewhere. You can follow along here if you're into that: www.paddleplanner.com/tools/m...
....OR, here's a simple map this shows all possible paths we were considering before and during our trip. Our final/chosen route is intentionally omitted as we want that to be a mystery to you as it was to us in the moment. This is the map we used during the trip like a GPS device, with Avenza Maps app on my phone. GPS doesn't require cellular service.

The odd person will ask why repost old content? New content is preferred, of course, but there are a lot of reasons for reposts. If a repost is not of interest, I get that too. If you want to try to avoid them, if it says FULL in the title it's almost certainly a repost. But here's the case for making them: -Most of all, prior to 2021, everything I did was in Windows Movie Maker. This leaves a lot to be desired for me as an editor and for an audience as well. I have way more control now with Resolve, especially with respect to audio. -This video in particular we really wanted to repost because of the frame juddering from the camera malfunction. In Resolve, I was able to correct this to a large degree. -Reposts come 1.5-2 years after an original series. I don't think most people will remember a video that well after that amount of time and it's almost like watching something anew. -Moreover, the channel grows a lot in that timeframe and most new subs don't go through the back catalogue. This brings it to the surface for those people and likely a much larger audience as the algorithm increasingly recognizes a channel with time. -A generally tighter edit. This is 2h19m vs the original series totaling 4 hours. It's edited from scratch, not just a straight repost of the originals, and has a better pace. -I haven't been out lately so I time reposts to fill gaps. -I used to split trips up into multi-part series but I don't like that anymore and want to provide full version edits of longer trips. -It's a fun escape for me to edit in winter, and hopefully a nice break for viewers in winter to see a summer trip 🙂

Stumbled upon your videos last week and have watched many of them since then. My late husband and I did the BWCA in the same fashion as your Quetico trip. Your video has brought back a lot of memories for me and I thank you for that. I am now 70 and my husband would have been 76. He was a US Forester and worked many places here in the US and just loved the outdoors just like you do. You and Erin remind me of my husband and I and the trips we took. We spent two weeks in the BWCA, two weeks on the Allagash in Maine and two weeks on the Green River in Utah down to the the confluence of the Colorado river. We also had many shorter trips all over the US most every weekend. I would like to make a few recommendations if I may. Love to see you with a dedicated bow or stern line, one you can detach when needed but one you can tie off on a tree, rock or brush to keep your boat safe. I would also like to suggest getting "Crazy Creeks" to use as you paddle or when you are on shore. They are lightweight, easy to pack, and can save your back either while in the boat or when on shore. One thing we did for our longer trips is pack a small "ER" kit that might help you when out in the willywags. I went to my Doc's and asked for an antibiotics script for Giardia, and another for any general infection such as a bladder infection or wound infection. I also asked for a more potent pain killer in case of a bad ankle sprain or fracture. Just enough to get you to civilization and professional help. The other two things in that kit were an eye kit and a tooth kit, both small and packable but invaluable when necessary. You may never need these, but to have them when needed is golden. You have lifted my spirits and reminded me of times past, and for that I am truly grateful. I look forward to many more videos from you and I paddle along with you as I watch. Many thanks.

My heart goes out to you as I imagine it's bittersweet to relive those memories with your late husband, but I'm sure they're also too precious not to cherish and I'm glad that you could revisit those times us. We truly appreciate you looking out for us and sharing your insight, particularly regarding eye and tooth kits. I've never really thought about having specific kits for them but I can only imagine how agonizing an issue with either would be out there. Thank you again for your touching message 💚💚
@denisesarazin6753
@denisesarazin6753 2 роки тому
@@LostLakes I second the eye kit recommendation. I had to cut a trip short last year because I woke up with a deeply red and infected eye, out of nowhere. I hadn’t thought to pack antibiotic eye drops. Such a simple thing that can make or break a trip. Another one I’m adding to my kit this year is kinesiology tape, so I can stabilize an ankle or knee if I twist it or if it’s just irritated and needs support (and a printout of how to use the tape for different issues). You can pre-cut strips of the tape. They’re super light and take up hardly any space.

As a Spaniard myself and keen fisherman I always dreamed of a journey around the northern forests of Alaska and Canada. Those gorgeous places have magic to me as if they were a heavenly paradise on Earth. Hearing those names like British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan…one lake after another with tens of beautiful islands to explore where to set up your tents and sleep gazing the stars. Those clean waters and currents with plenty of fish: a pike now then several smallies on a row then a number of gorgeous golden walleye… and even largemouth so far North! And the icing of the cake in the form of lake trout. Clean water to drink, good fish to eat, healthy fruit like blueberries all around to enjoy… Those gorgeous dawns with the bird’s sound… those gray heavy loaded clouds heralding a storm… A dream come true, definitely a dream come true. My English listening skill isn’t very good and I missed much of the meaning of your talking. Yet I don’t turn on the subtitles because I am raptured by such an immense beautiful scenery and that’s what matters the most to me: not to be woken up and distracted from such pleasure. Quite a fortunate discovery having discovered this channel.

Thank you for posting this incredible account of your trip to Quetico. Your cinematography and laid-back approach to storytelling is phenomenal. I also appreciate the sparing use of music. It's truly transformative and puts the viewer with you all in the environment. My buddy and I have been doing an annual trip to Quetico for the past ten years but new babies and other factors mean we're missing our trip this year! Your video was the perfect substitute to transport me back there and get my excited for next year's trip. Have camped on Blueberry Island a few times, it's a beautiful site. I also recognized a few of your other sites on Pickerel and other spots along the journey. Such a beautiful place to camp and explore. I can tell you that Snapping Turtles are a common visitor near the campsites in Quetico. Most likely folks are feeding them so unfortunately they're pretty habituated to the campsites. They're super fun to watch though! Loved the moment with the lost net too. I dropped a fishing rod last year just north of Quetico lake so I can relate to that experience! Frustrating but cheers to you both for landing fish without it. Anyway, I'm very glad to have found your channel and am looking forward to more content! Maybe we'll see you on the trail one day! Cheers!

@@LostLakes hey Jon & Erin, love this trip, might watch again and again. Good memories of PooBah near there. In the early seventies it had a sluice way in the crick and I shot it in a 19 foot canoe, tons of fun! Also got rammed by 1 of a dozen sturgeon. I was pulling the canoe over a shallow spot. I jumped higher than ever! Take care kids, thank you both for brightening my days!

Been to your Quetico before, but sad, Arthritis has taken me and attempting the once young and fun journey being there has turned into a life of living vicariously through your eyes and spirits may be all I have left.. Kudos you beautiful people for making me realize the beauty and one in nature your beautiful landscape and air y'all have.... don't lie , don't cheat and steal... treat others as you would treat them .. not a religious man but how I live thank you for letting me live through your eyes.......

We are from Duluth born and raised and now live in Charleston SC, we only get back home yearly and are too old for wild camping at this point in our lives, so thanks for the great memories! We really miss walleye! Yummmmmmmy! We did do 2 1/2 months of wild camping in Scotland this year and Ireland the year before so we are still at it in our mid 70’s, just in small RVs now. Going home next month, might just squeeze in some fishing!

The Eagles watching you are waiting to be fed.. My brother fed his first eagle on cowa Bay on the north east part of Kawnipi. The eagle took light before the fish was out of his hand as he launched it on shore. We recently fed an eagle 4 times in an hour on Crooked lake in Quetico. My brother climbed out of the canoe while I filmed the eagle. He cut the fishes throat and started to climb into the canoe. The eagle dropped out of the tree and scooped up the fish 4 feet behind my brother. The next two. He killed the fish then stepped back 5 ft and the eagle immediately swooped in. It even screetched "thank you". The Falls chain is awesome . Very well edited❤

Repeating beauty, amazing, enchanting things and scenery I can't possibly create is well worth the time spent. Being able to relax midst troubling times, especially now, is invaluable. I'd much rather experience the blue sky, wind in my face and the warmth and aroma of a campfire than the odor of a desk drawer and a pile of paper work. Work may be a necessary endurance, but it can never replace the longing to be free in your element. Speaking of wonderful happenings, may I ask have you started sending wedding invitations?

This brings back some *SERIOUS* memories from a million years ago... I spent my summers in Junior High & High School, from 1973 thru 1979 coming north from Michigan and canoeing in Quetico, based out of Nym Lake with the old Voyageur Wilderness Programme. Our favo(u)rites were the long night paddles up the length of Sturgeon Lake, timed so we would reach the lower channel of the Deux Riviere (and it's associated portage) right before sunrise, floating silently as we could north up the channel from upper Sturgeon Lake into Twin Lakes and then portaging up into Doré Lake for breakfast... We saw all sorts of wildlife performing their morning ablutions on the Deux Riviere, including one bull moose who was none too happy to be sharing his breakfast of water lilies with half a dozen canoes full of schoolkids... And, as I recall, the lake trout fishing on Oriana Lake and Hamburg Lake was exemplary. And I too have camped on Blueberry Island - small world innit? I also shudder to remember the infamous Jesse Portage, some 1328 meters of absolute hell (or at least it was fifty years ago) between Maria Lake and Jesse Lake. I wonder what it loooks like now, although maybe not enough to go see it again. I still have my vintage 1978 map of Quetico framed on my bedroom wall, marked up with all the routes & portage notes from all six summers of wonder. Maybe one day before I die I'll see Nym Lake again, and put a paddle to work in one of VWP's giant Montrealer canoes one last time... Thanks for stirring the memories. Je Suis un Homme du Nord!
