During the 2018 Imola Classic event by Peter Auto my friends Davide458Italia, Italiansupercarvideo and I recorded this special race car called Howmet TX.
Built in 1968 it was powered by a mid-mounted, two-stage gas turbine engine from Continental Aviation which had originally been developed for use in military helicopters. It was also the first turbine-powered car to win a race (two, to be precise).
Using such a engine has led to solve some problems in the development phase such has the immense lag standard turbines have during accelerations plus even the deceleration wasn't their best. So two wastegates were added between the two turbines working in tune with the throttle: as more throttle was applied the wastegates closed gradually, feeding more and more gasses to the second turbine generating power. On full "boost" engine was able to produce something like 300+ bhp.
A great turbine advantage was the fact it didn't require a standard gearbox, so a single one with just the forward gear was used, plus a quick-change differential that allowed to adapt the final drive ratio to each track.

When you skip the engine and go straight to a turbo.
@donaldasayers
@donaldasayers 4 роки тому
Setright makes the same point in his book "Some Unusual Engines": As you increase the boost provided by a turbo you increase the energy available in the exhaust gasses til you reach the point when the exhaust turbine is producing more power that the pistons. At this point it becomes logical to swap their function and let the pistons drive the input compressor and the turbine power the wheels. The only danger being that at this point you are liable to lose the pistons altogether and invent the gas turbine which is maybe not what you intended.

In all honesty this turbine engine has more redlines to worry about than a normal reciprocating engine, especially during startup (a hot start can wreck your turbine in seconds.) @jakegarrett8109 5 років тому
@@doktorbimmer You could put the spike muffler cuttings on the engine nacelle if you're worried about the exhaust, or you can fan the exhaust. Or if its in the front, using a thrust tube for bypass flow will result in lower velocity at the edge of the flow (less abrupt change near the static air outside) as well as giving you a little more efficient thrust assuming low bypass ratio turbofan or turbojet. Most jets are not crazy loud, at least modern ones. The old ones are terribly loud (the ones with low bypass ratio below 1.7), the new high bypass engines like the Pratt&Whitney "Ultra high bypass" turbofans, which are much more efficient (over 12:1 bypass).

From what I understand, theoretically you could indeed use an afterburner, at least of a sort since it wouldn't be an "after"burner but more like a "dump multiple times more fuel after the compressor to add some more power" system, but you'd have to make sure that both the free turbine that directly drives the wheels and the wastegate (aka gas redirector that serves as a wheel output power throttle controller) can handle the suddenly very high temperatures in excess of 1600 Celsius as opposed to the regular 600 Celsius, not to mention the copious amounts of waste heat and flames now shooting out of the exhaust (of which also suddenly generates a lot of thrust force as well). And if the engine has thermal regenerators similar to what the Chrysler Turbine used, those too would need to be built to handle the high temperatures.

Without looking it up, I'm thinking it's a turboshaft engine the same type used in helicopters. It delivers power into a shaft instead of thrust in air movement like what we associate with jet engines.
@Not_Hans
@Not_Hans 5 років тому
Morten basically this it does not rely on thrust it uses a shaft that in turn is connected to a transmission or some sort of drive box then to the rear wheels. The concept is not that bad I am sure it never took off because of the amount maintenance and complicity of parts. Since this is running on what I assume is regular race gas the turbine does not make crazy amounts of power probably around 800ish my uncle has a jet car that runs on kerosene instead of jet fuel it loses about 30-40% of its power but it still does the 1/4 in 6 seconds :P
@StarkRaven59
@StarkRaven59 5 років тому
There are two components to this thing's "engine" note. The high-pitched whine and the exhaust. Unfortunately for me most of the high-pitched noises hit the right frequencies to make my ears hurt, and the exhaust ain't much consolation. So while it's a cool car in concept, I think I'd much rather listen to the Porsches going by.

Man, those were the days, they were really golden. Kids loved it, I cannot remember any other time when kids were really loving motor racing as much as this era. Howmet, and Chapparal were incredibly innovative with everything. These guys put big bucks into mad but often ingenious ideas. Even Ferrari, Porsche, Alfa, Matra feared what the crazy Americans were bringing into endurance racing.
