My father worked for General Motors Corp. He would get free passes to these auto shows. It was a real big deal back then so you had to dress up nice. Being a kid it wasn't much fun. Sometimes the different booths would give away free keychains or small model cars. When it was show time a pretty lady with a microphone would describe all the new fancy features that particular model of car had. I remember that the managers of my dad's parts division warehouse would always have a brand new car to drive around. After putting a few miles on the car it would be traded in for another new one. The car with a few miles on it would go to a dealership so it could be sold to public or employee at discount. Really miss those times & beautiful cars. Still wish Dad kept our 64 Impala SS... Thank you for the video 😊

Detroit made junk in the 70s. That was the decade when Japan rode all over the US auto industry.

Maybe you bought a junk car but the gas crunch and Detroit being slow to downsize Tanks for cars was the reason for Japanese Domination.

This tugs at my heart. I’m from Detroit and i’ve been to the Ponchetrain many times. My Grandfather and Grandmother lived in Grosse Pointe. My grandfather worked at Ford and they used to dress up and go to events like this… They were probably there. My mom and dad would’ve been there too except they were serving their country at the time.

When I'm watching stuff like this I’m always kinda sorta expecting to see my parents and older brother. He was 22 when this Auto Show happened and he really liked cars. My dad was a tool-and-die salesman so he was kind of industry-adjacent. This show would have been just what they’d have loved! Thanks, Scott, for sharing!

The good ole days when every brand had a turntable with a pretty girl riding around. It was about that time they gave them a mic and a script to tell you about all the new stuff.

Such good times ... Growing up in Windsor, Ont . ( 1mile from Cobo Hall across the border/river) I was a young girl with many older brothers who appreciated my shared love of each year's new cars and they let me tag along, My sisters were all about the music and dancing. And our schools were all in for teaching us the history. After the riots, Detroit Riverfront was made a safe and organized playground for tourists. A .20 cent bus ride and I had the world at my fingertips. All my memories of Detroit make me smile. You didn't have to hit the auto shows to see a parade of Big Beautiful Detroit Steel. Cruising was for everyone to enjoy and show off a well cared for and loved car , that mutual joy started friendly conversations and brought folks together for good times without $$ or competing egos causing hate. Even a woody station wagon with a family of 11 inside was welcome to join the lineup, Gas was cheap, and your fast food came right to your window. Memories 🥰🥰

The year before I was born. I am also from Detroit and yes, fond memories. Used to go with my Dad, every year, that and autorama. Dad worked at Cadillac, Clark Street Assembly and later at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. The fleetwood brougham d'elegance was my favorite GM car. We only could afford Chevy's. All my Dad ever drove. He died in 2018 at 72. A life well lived in this area! Came out of the Mountains of Middlesboro Kentucky in 1968 and lived the American dream.

We went all the time and drove 3 hours to get there in the dead of winter. the car show was an upscale event, and the dress and cars where something to see. the models all top notch, and the constant wiping down of the vehicles. people where aloud to sit any of the car models at that time .and you brought home bags of car brochures

My dad who was a NJ longshoreman got tickets to the 1965 (or 6) auto show Madison Square Garden. My folks never went anywhere, let alone into NYC so this must have been a big deal! I must have been 4 or 5. Mostly l recall wearing a goofy plaid dress jacket and red tie! Thanks, Scott.

Scott! That is REALLY cool. Love seeing old footage like this. I remember vividly my friend’s mom had a 1971 Pontiac Granville just like the one in the video. White on white leather. It felt like royalty riding in that land yacht. I can’t believe people were able to park those behemoths back then, although I do remember more than once a neighbor taking off the mirrors on their Buick Electra getting in & out of the garage. They say everything was bigger in the fifties but the excess of the seventies was pretty wild as well. Thanks for the memories!

Very cool. Dad was a GM Tech designer from the 50s until retirement. It was around 71 in the winter that 3 other teens & me stuck our thumbs out & hitchhicked from Detroit to Southern California. ❄ to 🌴 & deserts. Learned far more than school ever taught me! 😅

The music you chose was so intriguing that I had to track down its origin. I found the album on UKposts, thanks! And the footage is so cool, like a childhood memory, fuzzy and faded with flashes of color and light. "I seem to remember fancy ladies spinning around and shiny cars, and hazy cigarette smoke."

I remember 2 of our friends received Ford Mavericks for graduation presents, we weren’t very impressed with them. They were a few years older than us & the cars didn’t have the cool factor like a Corvette or Mustang or a Camaro that were the popular cars at our school. My brother was a mustang guy , I think he put so many together they were like Lego for him. But on Sunday he didn’t work, he opened his garage to take his special edition silver corvette for a spin.
