What a bad day. No-one is entirely sure how many chicks are still in the box. There was five at the end of play on the 20th and now there's three or possibly four. The maximum number of chicks seen on camera at any one time today was four but that doesn't mean that there wasn't five in their. One chick was removed from the box at 7.58pm. We'll have to wait until the morning and see what's what. Hopefully it'll have stopped raining by then.
A third uninvited intruder gave us all a shock today (00:49). Especially our female. If anyone knows what type of bird this is please drop a comment and let us know. Our female was just about to give one of the chicks a big caterpillar when the interloper announced itself. It looks like she stress ate it afterwards!
In other news one of the chicks was having a good wing flap and they seem to enjoy an afternoon snooze so much the parents are having to pester them to eat.
More tomorrow...

It died because of the hard-bodied centipede provided by the father at 6:32, you can see it trying to get it down, then disappearing for a while after that. The mother even sits there with a worm for ever as the other chick attempts dozens of times to eat it, its about 8:48 when the mom really kind of gets frustrated trying to force feed the one choking on the centipede without knowing whats going on. About 1-2 hours later you can see it lifting its head up struggling. Either the centipede caused internal damage and was chewing on its internal organs, or it just kept writhing alive inside the baby causing it to suffocate, either way that is a terrible and sad death :( The centipede was not dead and can stay alive as long as any of the holes along the side of their body have access to air. The fragile tissues of a chicks GI tract could handle a dead one possibly but not like that...

Jesus loves you. Jesus is coming soon for the Rapture. Give your life to God and dedicate it to him. To be saved, believe that Jesus died on the cross to save you of your sins and rose 3 days later. Confess that with your mouth and confess that he is King. Ask him to come into your heart and forgive you of your sins, then repent of your sins. After you do all that you'll be saved. Once you're saved, focus on living a spiritual and holy life. Read your Bible, pray, and talk to God every single day. Amen🙏🏽

This beak in the nest problem can be resolved by a simple modification 1. Get a 5" long pvc pipe of the same diameter as the hole. (Paper towel roll might do the trick but won't last) 2. Attach the pvc pipe with the hole. Goal is to prevent the beak of the predator from entering the nest.

@@DP-ot6zf You're right the attachment should be sturdy enough to withstand bad weather and weight of the bird, I am thinking of using a steel wire : 1. Making 2 holes on each side of pvc pipe parallel to each other. 2. Run the steel wire through both the holes, and in order to get get both the ends of the wire outside the pvc pipe. 3. Same step on the parallel side. (This setup will appear to look like a button spinner) 4. Now place the pvc on the hole(Use a glue gun to seal for water leakage), and tie both sides ends around the bird house. (Important: Drill some holes below the pvc pipe as in case of rain the water will flow into the bird house) People this is all i can come up with hope you get the point ,comment for any better suggestions

Actually, most birds find hollows or spaces with entrances about as big as this one. The problem comes when the walls of the nest aren't as sturdy as the walls of this box; a predator can with a little effort get to the chicks depending on the material the walls are made of. If it's a hollow in a tree, the predator might scrape out some bark, and if it's a gap in some stones they may dislodge the stones. So bird boxes really are a blessing.

Really makes a person realize what these birds go through just to survive and raise the next generation. On top of predators, weather, trying to find a suitable nesting place, and all the rest, you have people spraying the hell out of their yards with pesticides because they can't tolerate any bugs whatsoever. What they don't think about (or care about) is how that affects birds and all other wildlife... and our lives when the stuff makes its way into our waters. I read an article recently about how people are using more pesticides this year with the cicada explosion and it is blinding and killing birds and their babies when they eat the cicadas. Instead of Mother Nature providing a bountiful feast for this year's fledglings, stupid people are making it their worst nightmare.

This reminds me of my current situation. I have a bird that made her nest on top of my back patio fan. She had several babies and they were all killed! One by one! I’m assuming they were killed by another bird. We have a lot of crows around our neighborhood right now. And then after the babies were dead, the mom would obviously push them out of the nest, so I got the joy of walking onto my back patio three different times to find dead babies laying on my floor😔 It absolutely broke my heart every time! It made me so upset and left me feeling super helpless. Mostly because there’s nothing I can do. I can’t interfere with nature, and I do respect the fact that the crows have to live too. Now the bird has started over and she has another batch of eggs up there that she is currently sitting on top of to incubate. They should hatch any day now, but I’m so worried they are all going to get killed again! I don’t know what to do, and something tells me I’m just going to have to let it be

I can't help but find the "natural' sewerage system absolutely amazing. It's not something I had ever thought about. Everything the birds need to know is pre-programmed into them, incredible. The other thing that is amazing is he size of the caterpillars that the babies can get down their cakeholes, it would be like us trying to swallow a large watermelon.

TRUE BUT the baby literally died …. Perished. From eating it. ..BRO 😭

Birds are incredible, i remember have the top window open in my shop once we had a load of twisted willow up there and someone came in saying we have pigeons going in out of the window, when i went up stars they had taken most of it away breaking bits off for thier nests lol so i just left them to it, they must of thought they hit the jack pot when they saw that lot.

It is great to see that feeding amd the chicks obviously always the fisrt egg hatching is the strongest between the chicks so he is the dominant and always keep himself first to eat that is the nature of life so the parents feed the first chick to open his mouth always i appreciate what u did to the birds i enjoy watching them

It seems one of the baby birds choked on a bug. While one of the parents tried to get it back, it couldn't so it just left while the baby bird went down to the bottom. Which it never returned to the surface to eat! While the other birds ate.

Maybe it died as a result of that. Could it not have been the parent removing the bird from the nest at the end? The bird wasn't moving.

It's harsh but you don't want the birds to get complacent by taking away all of the danger. That kind of behavior would be passed onto their young and hurt the long-term survival of the species, because humans won't always be there to take care of them. The species must remain strong and capable of surviving without any human help.

that is so true. Bird feeders are good and all but some bird's beaks have started to change shape to fit those feeders better when they don't have to find nutrition themselves or open shells etc anymore when even sunflower seeds are already peeled and everything. That is not a good sign

@@yummyapplestroodle I agree with your thinking. This is why I put seed directly on the ground and with the shell. In my area of South East Texas, I get red billed woodpeckers; house finches; chikadees; bluebirds; pigeons; doves; black birds; grossbeak; cardinals; blue jays and robins (in migration) and of course the brown squirrels. All of them partake of the seed I put right on the ground. I clear an area of the grass and weeds, pack down the dirt and then dump the seed -- all next to dead, skinny tree trunk I left a few dead branches on. Every guest utilizes the dead tree as a perch to eat the seed. The birds will pick a seed, then jump onto the tree to beat the seed on a branch to crack the shell. My neighbor puts her seed into a bowl that she places on the ground. But I find the bowl to fill up with water if we get a rain shower.

Having watched the finished video, it's so sad that they started with such a large nest only for 2 to survive. That's how it is but dang...
