While recovering from my broken ankle, I can't really get into my lab - so my next few videos are likely to be like this one - computer screen cap... Today's video is geared more towards the professional customers that I support rather than the hobbyist, and shows how to use a Tektronix RSA306B and SignalVu-PC to view, capture and analyze some narrowband frequency hopping signals. I use Bluetooth signals as an example, using a technique that I call "Capture Wide, Analyze Narrow". This capability is inherent to all Tek USB RSAs (RSA306B, RSA503A, RSA507A, RSA603A, RSA607A) as well as all of the benchtop real-time spectrum analyzers (RSA5100, RSA6100 and RSA7100 series).

Thanks, Alan! Hope your recovery is going nicely. It's amazing what can be done with a real time spectrum analyzer.

Thank you sir for the great videos. Would you please make a video where you capture a TDMA signal and show the timeslots in time domain and how the signal looks like on the frequency spectrum (compared to a normal broadcast signal for example). Get well soon!

It took me a LOT of trial and error to figure out this workflow a few years ago - I wish I had found this video when it was first published! Thanks for the walkthrough. I still haven't used Spectrogram very much (or understood how it's different from DPXogram), but seeing your time overview setting change the way it looks helps give me a better idea! I will definitely be playing around with that display soon. Now I just wish I could right click and save the entire Spectrogram (not just the visible portion) as a PNG.

I'm glad you found this helpful. Yes, that's been a requested enhancement (saving all spectrogram traces in a file). If you save a DPXogram into a TIQ, it will save all of the traces. Feel free to reach out to your local Tek folks to help you with getting the most out of your RSA. BTW - it was a pleasure having you in the Innovation Forum.

Great video as always. Possibly a silly question. Do either the RSA306 or the RSA500 allow you to view a larger span than 40MHz in "non real time". Also is the signal processing for the FFTs/demod done on the instrument itself, or purely on the PC?
@w2aew
@w2aew 7 років тому
Yes, of course. You can set the Span to anything you want up to the full frequency range. This can be done using the non-real-time Spectrum display which basically is a standard spectrum analyzer type display. You can also do this with the DPX real-time display - in this case it will step in ~40MHz "chunks", building a mini color bitmap for each chunk, stitching across the entire wideband span. All of the FFT, chirp-Z and demodulation is done in the PC on these USB based units.

w2aew Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. It's the annual underspend at work so time to go shopping!
@w2aew

The RSA500 series is also portable, and even better RF performance. RSA600 series for bench operation. Two models available for each - 3GHz or 7.5GHz. Both with available tracking generator.
@JamesGibbard
@JamesGibbard 7 років тому
radioman . I have no association with Tek but anecdotally if you need real time signal analysis, and aren't quite as fussed about top of line RF performance, these USB style units are massively cheaper than benchtop ones like the R&S FSVR or FSW. I agree that the prices are a bit steep for hobbyist use, but for a company if you can get away with a single high end benchtop unit and few of these it could represent a big saving.
@w2aew
@w2aew 7 років тому
The level of RF performance of the RSA507A and RSA607A is in the same league as competitive analyzers that cost 2-3x as much. While they do represent a great level of performance for the money, they typically are not geared towards the hobbyist.

Can you do a comparison of the RSA306B compared to the RSA306 that The Signal Path reviewed a couple years ago? I'm curious to see if this model eliminates some of the spurs present in the earlier incarnation. Oh, and feel better! --Vince

Can SignalVu be used to demodulate the FSK section in the analysis window? Or do you have to do it the old fashion way with pen and paper (or export it and use some other software)? Thanks for the videos!
@w2aew

Yes, you can demodulate FSK in SignalVu-PC. I requires option SMV in order to do so.

What are your 3 best RSA choices for cost vs. performance?
@w2aew
@w2aew 7 років тому
The RSA306 is definitely the most bang for the buck. The RSA500 and 600 series offer optional higher frequency range and optional tracking generator, and have better SFDR specs than the 306, but can cost twice as much depending on model and options.

May I ask for a favor? My master's thesis was using software defined radio to capture, demodulate and decode RBDS signals. I want to take a stab at doing that for a bluetooth signal, but I can't find any examples and i don't have any gear that is fast enough to capture my own. Would it be too much to ask for you to capture just *one* of those bursts we see at 3:00 and maybe upload it somewhere? I want to see how the signal is structured not just from a theoretical standpoint (ie what the standard dictates) but how the signal actually looks like, in reality and if i can somehow manage to decode it myself. Thank you in advance and i understand if you decline.
@w2aew
@w2aew 7 років тому
I'll look into it - not sure what format you'd need to see.
@GeorgeTsiros
@GeorgeTsiros 7 років тому
don't need more than a series of 8bit samples. Signed or unsigned is the same to me, i'll figure which one it is. Could also be CSV or something, but that might be unnecessarily big.
