I’m a high handicapper who goes around in about 95-100 on a reasonable day. I’m going to use these strategies, perhaps not to break 85, but to start off getting somewhere near 90 consistently. I can see from this video where I’m leaking some of my shots. Thanks for the tips

Great video and so practical. Love the idea of getting to where “you” want to be so that you can figure how out how best to approach the rest of the hole. I rarely see people scoping out specific areas, usually they only the scope the pin.

This was actually some good advice. I had been looking for more strategy/course management videos on UKposts because these are the easiest to incorporate into my own game. There are already too many technique videos that present so many pointers that are impossible to remember unless you're watching the video while at the golf course.

I actually played today and tried it out! Ironically found myself in more bunkers than usual (new course to me) but had much more makeable chips/up and down chances. I'll try it on my home course next. Usually I more just pick a side to "miss" to and then whether I want to be front/middle/back of the green.@@thescoringmethod

So true right it’s amazing how when we get in trouble, we narrow our focus because we only have one option and we execute the shop yet we can stand in the fairway with the perfect yardage, overthink it, and hit the worst shot of the month.

@@thescoringmethodI can give you a long list. Maybe just do one video on each one. The vast majority of golfers are not going to be that interested in these stats/lessons/rules. But there are many, many golfers that are craving to see this info. You could develop a big following doing each one, just one at a time as a series. Some you have done already but here's my long list. - from 100 to 55 yards out, approach shots are basically the same distance from the hole at 18 feet. Don't try hero shots extending a 100 yard approach into a 55 yard one. Hit the fairway instead. It is the same result from 100 yards to 55 yards. - Fairway shots from 100 yards are more accurate than 55 yard shots from the rough. Average fairway distance from 100 yards on the fairway is 15 feet from the hole but it is 20 feet from the rough at 55 yards. - Long Par3's and long approach shots, inaccuracy means just aim to the middle of green. Flag-hunting and laser shooting is a fools errand. - Average green size is 38 feet from the centre. You have room to hit the green but still be 38 feet from centre. Approach shots from 175 yards are 38 feet away so target is always just the middle of the green. For smaller greens, even 150 yards out means target centre only since since average dispersion is 25 feet from the hole, about the size of small green courses. - 2-3 foot putts are close to guaranteed, 5 foot make percentage is only 75%, 8 feet is 50%, 12 feet is 25%, 20 feet is 10%. - Bear down hard on the putts within 12 feet then because this is where you actually have a chance to make the putt. Read it hard, make sure it is one foot by weight. But outside 15 feet is just get it inside 3 foot circle for the close to guaranteed. Weight is 10 times more important than line from this distance. Bear down hard on the inside 12 footers but get the weight right outside 12 feet. - Average approach shot from 100 yard to 55 yards is 18 feet away with only a 10%-15% make rate. Birdies are accidents where you pulled or pushed the shot. - Because missing the green on your approach shot costs you an average 0.35 shots more. 60 foot putts are just as accurate as 30 foot chips. - On Par5's go for the green on shot2 or get itas close to the green as you can. Lay-ups on Par5's cost you 0.6 extra shots. 0.6 shots is a huge differential, one of the largest differentials. No lay-ups but exceptions for water, trees, OB type penalty/risks but go for the green. - Par4's, hit the fairway and 100 yard to 55 yard are the same result anyway so just get it inside 100 yards as the first goal, inside 55 yards on the fairway is 2nd goal if you hit it far or the hole is short. - Short game inside 30 yards is where the most strokes are saved by good shots versus poor shots. This is the yardage that makes the most difference in the game. Short game inside 30 yards is by far the most important part of golf towards scoring (the slope of the shots taken line is the most steep on a chart which means this is the most important part of the game). This applies to both putting and chipping. - Fairway shots are very consistently much closer to the hole than rough or bunker shots. - Except green-side bunker shots are more accurate than chip shots from the rough. Green-side bunkers are not that bad. - But outside 200 yards, rough and bunker shots are so inaccurate, it is not worth going for the green at all. Lay-up to inside 40 yards on the fairway which results in lower scores. - 160 yard fairway shot has the same accuracy as a 100 yard rough shot. Fairways are king once again. Bomb and gouge is actually not true according to the numbers. - Bunker shots from 110 yard to 80 yards are actually worse than a 150 yard bunker shot. Avoid the mid-distance bunkers at all costs. - On Par5's avoid all bunkers (except greenside) because you have to lay-up (costing you 0.6 strokes) and especially avoid the 110 yard to 50 yard ones. - From 130 yards out, fairway shots are 14 feet closer than rough shots and 20 feet closer than bunker shots. Almost a stroke really according to the putting numbers. - Dispersion pattern from 40 yards is 12 feet from hole. Fairway is 10 feet, rough is 15 feet so flag-hunting is now okay and get your shots close to green as you can if you can. 100 yard to 55 yard is the same more-or-less but 40 yards is now considerably better. - Shots from 150 yards out / dispersion pattern just doesn't give you enough room for any flag-hunting. Just centre of the green. Missing the green costs you 0.35 shots. I really like your vids when you are giving a lesson based on the stats.

Nice tips. My aim for 2024 is breaking 85... I realize now that the mental trick I've been applying for years (play the course shot by shot, and always think my next shot will be fabulous) may be good to keep up morale, but also leads to shots that are too risky. Worked fine to break 90, but unless I have an excellent scrambling or driving day, it kept me stuck in the high 80's. Now it's time to get serious about avoiding mistakes. First attempt on a soft and muddy 9 holes home course I ended up 5 above par, just by adopting my course management to avoid any double bogeys. True, I have a new driver too after 10 years with more foregiveness, so that contributed too, but the mindset is different: instead of feeling that I would play a long iron for a GIR fabulous, I just played a shorter (more go to club) iron shorter but on average more accurate. A fabulously flushed shot is a good feeling with any club. I like were this is going.

This was great, thanks. Two thoughts: 1) Can you go out with a high handicapper, get them to hit the shot they would; then give them another ball and advise them on how you would approach it, and get them to hit that shot? I would volunteer my high handicap services if I was closer haha. 2) The green target selection was really helpful. More examples of this on different greens would be really helpful! Thanks again! Totally agree.... basically, use whatever club keeps you in the fairway....and whatever club gives you the best approach shot on to the green and/or close. On fringe shots where I can use the putter gives mw more control and/or 8i for a bump and run. I two put more often then. Wedges are a hit or miss. 😉

@@thescoringmethod Update: I've just returned from a 1 week coaching trip organised by Goodwood. Of course, the tee, range and sand lessons were amazing and helped fixed some weaknesses in my game. However, the shared insight from our pros was eye-opening. They both reiterated decision-making (taking my medicine, clubbing up to address my failed approach shots, less use of driver off the tee etc), but my biggest takeaway: stop putting so many cards in!!🥴🥴 Why? Because I need to take more time practicing shots on the course regardless of outcome. Time will tell!

Great, practical advice. When you were green side chipping, without a putter, I was all set to disagree. You then mentioned trying hybrid and putter as well. For golfers who never practice chipping - you know who you are - putter and hybrid are relatively easy clubs to not epically fail at. The same can not be said of lob and sand wedge with zero practice.
@thescoringmethod
@thescoringmethod 3 місяці тому
Definitely recommend testing the hybrid and putter. Most golfers should be pulling out those options before a lob wedge.

Played in a national scramble and we missed winning the regional event by 0.15 shots. We lost it with a simple, uphill 40 foot chip where all three players used a lob wedge - two fat, one skinny, then took us two putts for a bogey. I bump and run a 7-iron, or putt if suitable. TSM offers great advice for all players.

Surely though , if you are half decent out of bunkers then you don’t have to fear them that much. It might mean a bogey maybe , if you know you usually get out first time and up to 10 feet from the hole. Yes , staying out of the water is much more important , but one answer would be to improve our bunker play? Sometimes I play to avoid a bunker and end up in three putt territory , and some bunkers are more dangerous than others.

That’s a great point I think the thing about the three pet though is it still allows you to make the bogey. Where is the bunker can lead to even higher scores. But being able to have a basic pit shot out of the bunker with the right set up and get out first time is definitely a key step to consistently to breaking 85
@3chords490
@3chords490 Місяць тому
@@thescoringmethod Yes , I see. A lot depends on your skill set. I've always felt ok out of bunkers and getting out first time to somewhere around 10-20 feet or maybe better. But yes , I do try to avoid them and I would sooner be on the green. And you can get a horrible lie or bad stance in a bunker. suppose much depends on whether you have "bunker fear " or not. Everyone has their thing , for me its tight lies. If I feel I can get a club under the ball ( even thick rough) then I'm ok.

Carey is to start to understand how to take the big numbers off the scorecard and that means put the ball and play not fixing the slice. Just never taking the driver out. Not hitting flock shots around the green hitting hybrid chips and making sure you get the practice screen before you play and work on putting pace and short putts so you avoid the three putts. I see that most people believe that they need to work on their skill sets, rather than just their scoring.

You gotta first be able to hit it where you're aiming too.
@thescoringmethod
@thescoringmethod 13 днів тому
With in reason. I would say you need to know how avoid the trouble by being able to miss it where you can score. As you get better you get to hit it where you want more often but still start with where you can’t go.

Surely its 27 divided by 3 ? Equals 9 , if you add all three you must divide by three for an average ..
@thescoringmethod
@thescoringmethod 29 днів тому
Yes and no. So 27 paces times by 3 to make feet then dived by 3 as you have 3 golf balls = 27 they cancel each other out

For most high handicappers all those chips should have been puts.
@thescoringmethod
@thescoringmethod Місяць тому
That is a really great point if you have the opportunity to put it always put it. If not, then take the hybrid if you can’t take the hybrid, then use the bump and run chip. If you can’t ship it then use the pitch if you can’t pitch it, then lob it, but most people just go straight to the lob wedge and the basic fringe part or chip into a difficult shot. Really appreciate the comment.

Great video. I started using the "rule of 12" for chipping and my game around the green has changed a TON... and its mostly because I started chipping with a lot of other clubs besides the 60 degree... thus learning MY OWN GAME. Rule of 12 video: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/jn9_e36ran5z0KM.html

I love more pars but that’s to be single digits. To break 85 it’s about getting rid of blow up holes.

Trust me i know about blow up holes. In 2011 I was leading my club championship after the first round at even. Day 2 standing on the 13th tee tied for the lead. 345 yd par 4, needless to say i end up with a 9 on the hole, really bad decisions for the entire hole.

I always tell people that suck, to move up a set of tees 😂
@thescoringmethod
@thescoringmethod 3 місяці тому
Honestly most people should move up a set of tees. Take your 5 iron carry distance * 36 and that distance should be what tees you play from.

I'd offer a slight amendment to the 3-ball average trick; try to ignore the previous shot's finish so you don't learn from it. You don't get 2 mulligans in real life 😆

Uhm, at 4:41, half of that green quadrant is NOT on the green, 50% of shots to that green area will be in the rough. Aim for the fattest part of the green closest to the flag. In this case, the middle of the green. That green quadrant would fit nicely on the green itself. Go for the middle.
@thescoringmethod
@thescoringmethod Місяць тому
Agree in someway but it really depends on the persons dispersion if they’re missing the ball 20 to 30 yards off of their intended target then I would suggest if there’s a water hazard 15 yards left of the flag they would need to aim 15 yards right of the flag, which may put them off the green, but is better than being in the water. What are your thoughts?

I missed it at first too. He's counting in yards, but wants the result in feet. Hence a multiplication by 3 to change units, prior to the division by 3 for the average (effectively cancelling each other out)
