My husband and I have a mechanic that we've gone to for years; literally generations of owners (family business). If there is a problem, they'll let us know. If we don't need something, or if they can do a repair cheaper, they'll let us know, then, too. Honest mechanics are hard to come by, but when you have one, treat them right, and stay with them.

I learned my automotive skills from my grandfather, a 35+ year Polaroid employee. Decades before there were smart phones, guess what the most important tool was on any major job? The Polaroid 600 instant camera. And a marker to tag them as 1, 2, 3 etc, because installation is just about *ALWAYS* the reverse of removal (plus maybe a new O ring/gasket/bushing or something here and there)

my brother and I grew up helplessly witnessing our mother dole out our rent or grocery money for repairs. many times the problem never got fixed. it's still heartbreaking to remind myself of those times she wouldn't have dinner so we could eat. inspired me to learn how to do her repairs. only things she gets done at a shop now is tires and wheel alignments. this has been 22 years now. she's known to watch me through the windows and shed tears. An auto mechanic chain called "Automotive City" tried to scam me into replacing my truck's heater core for $1400. They showed me a photo on their phone of a heater core that looked obviously bad but I knew it wasn't my core because the big plastic cover under the dashboard was still dusty with no fresh fingerprints. Plus there was no sign of coolant leakage or smell. The reason why I took it in to their shop was because I recently had my water pump replaced (which had an obvious leak) but I was still losing coolant. I ended up replacing the radiator cap for $6 and that solved the problem. Saved myself $1394.

using the computer the right way helps. If I have a problem with my car I open google and type in what my car is doing and I always get all the possibilities. I have not the skills to repair my car myself, but then at least I can tell the mechanics my assumption which part is broken, and this can make the mechanics be more honest because it can give the impression you have deeper knowledge. Also I highly recommend not going to the car brand dealer, and rather to a 3rd party station. So in case of my little renault twingo I dont go to a renault dealer, I go to the service station which doesnt even sell cars.

This is EXACTLY why I don’t go to any shop, especially not the dealer. Years ago when I was 17 and knew nothing about cars, I took my 98 Monte Carlo to a shop to get a tie rod end replaced. They quoted me $390 and for some reason unknown to me I decided to go to Autozone…first time in my life I ever walked into one. The part was $12…it was at that point I taught myself everything I could about cars by watching guys like Scotty and reading a bunch. Yeah I once had a 98 Nissan Maxima that took conventional oil. Those other vehicles typically only take conventional oil. I brought my car to the shop to have them do an oil change. when I got it back my husband was rattling like crazy. I then looked at the receipt and come to find out that they put full synthetic in a vehicle that takes conventional oil. Worst part about it is that I am a mechanic what was just being lazy and thought I'd have somebody else change my oil for once. Ended up changing the oil again myself. Afterward my car quieted down and never gave me any issues. Just because you take your vehicle to a professional shop does not mean that the people working on it are professional. I now I do my own oil changes and all the other work that needs to be done unless it's something that I'm not equipped to do.

yep the old tie-rods scam , usually it just needs OUTER tie rod ends which are affordable but need an alignment after.
@stinkycheese804
@stinkycheese804 2 роки тому
In this one case, it was probably true and good advice, to replace the old tie rod ends due to ball joint wear, right before getting an alignment done. Not having it done and driving two more years, probably prematurely aged/wore the tires and made it steer/handle sloppy. By all means, DO, do your own repair. If it's an old car and you're about to get new tires, replace the tie rod ends yourself, adjust them as close as you can get them, THEN when they do the alignment they are set till they wear out again. If you try to do an alignment on worn out tie rods, it will be poor and some will refuse because it can't keep the angle on the road, and then it looks like they did a bad job.

X company computer says 2.5 hours of work. Read the SRM and knew it'll take 7 to 8 hours as it needs to pull the dash to reach the areas to feed through the firewall. Called X company engineer to confirm, sometimes they do not respond until next day, sometimes they think I'm stupid, this time they know I'm right but not sent paperwork to my supervisor saying it's 8 hours. The small town dealership we go to takes the time 🤷🏼‍♀️ I have had a random ghost issue with my car where sometimes it decides not to start- happened a few times. The dealership picked it up and spent time with it. They kept it for a week (and gave me a free rental for the week). It started for them every time they tried it and did road tests and they did a full system check with the computers. Couldn’t figure it out. I say it’s a ghost or demon bc both times it started behaving at the dealership (even after having to be towed up there after we couldn’t get it to start)... had the car for years and still runs fine. Really all they could tell me at the dealership was not to let it get too hot bc both times it didn’t want to start it was HOT outside 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thanks Scotty for yet another great video. Keep kicking dealers in the groin!!!Here's hoping that dealers really do disappear in the near future. There is no reason you can't buy a new car factory direct and used cars where the seller must offer full disclosure and all sub-par mechanical issues are identified. I bought an older 2007 Subaru from a small car dealer 2 years ago. About a week later there was a light that came on, saying airbags needed attention. My seller sent me to the dealer, which was the right thing to do to service airbag codes. The service rep at the dealer said it would be $195. My seller had clued me in that airbag are ALWAYS the manufacturer and dealer's problem with NO CHARGE to the vehicle owner. The service rep frowned when I told her I would not pay as it was THEIR responsibility; she looked at her computer for a moment and then apologized for her "oversight". Dealers are scumbags.

The way it should work is, they should upload Scotty's mind into a super computer. When a mechanic is fixing a car he should have one of those cameras like cops wear. The Scotty AI could then observe what the mechanic is doing and when he messes up a speaker in the camera can berate him (in Scotty's voice) and deliver mild electric shocks to help the mechanic focus.

Thank you sir for making my car related repair injuries so much less painful. (03' Jeep Liberty. 203k and runs great. Except for A) rear window latch stuck 'Closed' due to apparently bad microswitch, and B) ripping my hand open in the Cold, Stoopid MASSACHUSETTS Winter to try and release said latch to drive home without shattering window. Any chance a good application of De-Oxit will get that little switch to work? or should I just try and find a replacement. Thanks and Happy Holidays!

There are a lot of " mechanics". I brought a Focus in for a recall repair. No check engine light. When I picked it up, since there was no check engine light problem originally when I brought it in, I was shocked to see the check engine light on. The mechanic/dealership did not mention it was on. I looked up on internet what could cause this. One video mentioned that if connectors are not seated properly it would produce check engine light. I opened the hood and saw a connector that was not all the way in (sheer luck that I caught this) and pushed it all the way in. I asked another mechanic (not dealership) if they could let me know why the light is still on. I mentioned what had happened. He said the charge is $100 to determine why the light is on. Well, I continued to drive but my emissions was due so I was desperate to try and figure this out. I went to auto parts store and they tested and gave me the codes that apparently caused the check engine light. They said they could not clear the check engine light and I would have to order a part that could do that. I went to another auto parts store and they printed out what part "possibly" needed replacement, but they were careful to say this might not be the problem. I asked if they sold equipment that could clear the codes and light and they did find one in stock for $50. I bought it and figured out how to clear the check engine light and codes. Oh, my gosh, I was so relieved. I drove it to emissions testing, and no check engine light appeared and it passed inspection. So, all this time, though I luckily caught the problem, the check engine light could not just be cleared by any mechanics that I asked. I seriously do not trust mechanics now. What a racket against innocent consumers like me.
