How stupid was that captain to think "ah yes, alone on a boat in the middle of nowhere with 30 men, let's piss them all off"... Zero survival instincts whatsoever huh.

He probably treated workers like that his whole career as a captain, and never had anything remotely like that happen, so it was more his intense ego blocking out any conscience he had left to begin with
@janewaysmom
@janewaysmom 2 місяці тому
Agreed. They were willing to put up with his brutal treatment, as long as they made the money. He should have lied about the contracts and then let them find out when they got to land. Honestly though, the company shouldn't have been treating its workers the way it was at all. He was being honest with the employees, and that shouldn't have made this happen as a result. There's no way they would have allowed anyone to go on the ship and not catch a single squid, so there's no reason the company should have that contract. The captain made sure to call back to the company to get that one person unpaid for two months, so he would have called back to the company to make sure anyone who didn't catch anything was also unpaid.

@@thehighlander1945It’s not hard to find. UNCLOS is all you need to know to find your information. If it happens further than 12-24 miles from land depending on the closest country (aka international water, which begins past both the territorial and contiguous zones) you’re prosecuted by the country to who your ship is registered and the flag by which you fly. If you fly no flag trying to be dodgy you’re not simply subject to laws where you’re from, you’re subject to EVERYWHERE’s laws, meaning you can be tried by anywhere (typically either the country you’re from, the country that initially finds you, the country of the person you’ve axed, or just the US because the US is likely the one to come across you). In this story’s case, they’re subject to Chinese law because it’s a Chinese fishing boat.

The most terrifying thing I recently learned about the ocean, or more like what happens over there, is the fact that cargo ships sometimes lose containers and they don’t retrieve them. It’s too expensive for the companies to pay for the containers to be retrieved. So some independent people go out there to retrieve them and the companies are willing to pay to get them back. But that’s not the scary part. The scary part is that a lot of the human trafficking industry is made by the sea. So some of these containers have humans inside…and they never get retrieved…

My ex is working as an offshore. he told me once, they're in a ship from land to their platform, the journey took around 24hours because the ship is quite old. everything's fine at the beginning and at 2.30am, someone started screaming and they thought he got nightmare or something before they realised the scream came from outside of their "dorm". apparently the ship's captain kidnapped a fisherman a day before they sail and kept him in the bottom of the boat, idk the name of that specific place. apparently he managed to release himself from the rope and screamed for help. the most lucky thing was, the marine police was very close by and all of them ran out to scream to the policemen on their boat for help and some of them brought flashlight hoping the police sees it, lucky enough the missing fisherman has been reported by his wife and the captain was the the member of the gang that technically been giving information to pirate. they've been saved. excuse my broken english.

One thing....the superstition about whistling at sea isnt because it would bring on a storm its because whistling was how sailors communicated to one another on board. You dont whistle a tune because it would interfere with the line of communication. Its the same reason you dont whistle in a theatre, because the people who controlled the stage rigging also communicated in the same way (and some of them were also dockhands/sailors).

When I first heard the no whistling at sea superstition, first thought was a surperstition based on mythology. Like no whistling so that they ensure they didn't draw the attention of sirens out at sea, who could hear and reciprocate, or even imitate, the whistling tune with a soft siren like tune of their own, in order to coax the whistler to be lured off the boat and into the sea. But that's just me ^^'

My brother-in-law worked for an oil company and was in a ship for a couple of months. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), he was sent home because of some minor heart problem. The company paid for his flight back home, hotels and hospital fees. Anyway, he mentioned some stories of his life at sea. Some stuff that stood out was in a common area, all the workers were just watching p*rn when they're not working (this was before the advent of smartphones and downloading videos so they had stacks of vcds). Also, he heard tales of crew members who just suddenly disappear. Apparently, they just get pushed or thrown into the vast ocean. These are the members of the crew who, unsurprisingly, were the most hated. No one ever found out who did it cos the investiagtion yielded nothing.
@emmurr6073

My mother has told me stories of stuff like that too. She worked at the oil tankers back in the 80's for a few years. As a young woman the boys did try a lot to get a rise out of her by being nasty but the older workers kept an eye on her. At one point tho some guy did go too far and the rest of the crew wasn't ok with that so the guy just "mysteriously disappeared" so to speak. My mother was just as likely to be the one mysteriously disappearing it just so happened that the crew liked her more than the guy.

Maybe this was just in my specific profession, but I worked in a maritime field and in my job you would never have heard someone working a ship or boat as a "passenger". Passenger was only used to denote someone (typically paying) whom the crew is responsible for keeping safe. Crew was the most common term for the workers of the boat if you're not referring to them by specific position titles. Perhaps this is different internationally or in different industries though. Also random fun fact, I operated a boat in a predominantly Asian area which is where I learned that there have actually been studies done showing there may be hypersensitivity to motion sickness among the Asian community which I can imagine makes a ship full of untrained crew from Asia even more prone to the sickness you describe. Just a tidbit I was surprised by when I learned

A few years ago I circumnavigated the globe on a ship. It took four months but for most of it we were stopping at ports every week. The longest we went without land was 19 days and during that time, things got weird. It was near the end of the voyage so we were all pretty familiar with each other. That also means you start getting tired of people. But soon you realize theres no where you can go to be alone. We're alone from the rest of the world but surrounded by each other. We're sharing small, cramped cabins, the same dining hall, the same decks. Everywhere you go there's someone. Not to mention you're never holding still. You're always moving. Constantly there's that rocking motion from the waves. And if you focus on that, and how you can't find stillness for just a second, it could freak you out. You can't be alone or find quiet. Wherever you go there's noise from either people or the engine. There's nothing to see as long as you look. The food is repetitive, the routine repetitive. If you don't like someone, you can't just go home and get away from them. Towards the end people started fighting, even with (or especially with) their best friends. And I mean physical fights. Everyone was irritable and tense. We didn't really have internet (we were allotted 2 hours for the whole trip) no tv, and no phones. Just verrrry slow email, text only. You kind of begin to wonder if the rest of the world was ever even real, or if they're still out there at all. You feel like this is all that will ever be, just endless ocean. At night I would lie there and think about the water just outside the wall beyond my bed, and the miles of water beneath me. I would think about all the things and creatures that were in there, swimming beside my wall even now there could be a monster. And most of us weren't even working, and not hard like those fisherman. We were mostly studying. And it was only 19 days as well. I cannot imagine the state a human mind could get into over 2 years like that. To me it's more incredible that every voyage doesn't end like this squid ship.

That's a very good example. What the twins had is referred to as "folie au deux," which literally translates to "madness of two." It doesn't always have to be two people, but I've never heard of it affecting 33. If it's more than just a few people, that's when you get into the "shared psychosis" area or what used to be called "mass hysteria." (An out-of-date term, but we've all probably heard it.) I would totally agree with you that the dancing plaque is probably the best known example of that. I've never heard "folie au deux" used to describe more than a family of people. Granted, one family did contain 11 people, but they all lived together and all unalived themselves together because they thought it would bring their patriarch back from the dead. (It's a story that took place in India and there's a documentary on Netflix about it if you've never heard it. It's tragic but really fascinating.) Even though folie au deux is considered the same thing as "shared psychosis," I would argue that there's probably a different underlying reason for something that happens on such a small scale (just a few people) versus something that affects an entire town or, in this case, an entire ship.

The way this UKpostsr tells it makes you feel what the victims may have been feeling, the suspense, fear that she conveys in her voice is what sets the mood. Yes, this could have been recap as a documentary with less emotion. But her way of storytelling is engaging and emotional.

This is what is so scary about humanity - we can know for a fact that things like this happen, and then still question supporting it. It ahould be a no brainer, but if it means giving up something we like, we don’t do that. Just to clarify a minor fact after reading the original Chinese articles: That guy, Bo, who sold out the Management Team (Wen), and later got killed by Liu? Liu did not kill him because he sold out the Management Team and thought he would also one day spill his secrets out. If that was the case, then he would have killed the 19 year old boy based on the same thought process. Bo tried to speak up for the Management Team and that’s why Liu felt like he couldn’t trust him fully and killed him

They work 15 hours a day and are malnourished. And your right this one guy was transported and let on another boat to go to the hospital, He was Indonesian. He was beaten, bruised, and his feet were swollen from malnutrition, he died 7 hours after he arrived. Pretty wild stuff, hard telling the illegal stuff that goes on out of view in the abyss. After the incident, Chinesse fishing boat being checked in Batam, and then found 2 dead indonesian corpse in fish freezer. In 2023 Indonesia export 243 ton of squid to China, In Indonesia exist Squid farming, crab farmning, shrimp farming, clam farming ( Kerang ijo, kerang dara), Fish farming ( lele, Nila, gurame, patin). Squid just need 3-4 month from seeding to harvesting. Its just Indonesian is too traditional to mass produce it..

Or it was PTSD because murder on the high seas had happened before, and he knew they’d be going out with another inexperienced crew deceived with terrible contracts. I suspect the captain had already had some blood on his hands from rebellious crewmen before, and everyone agreed to call it an “accident”. The chef was one of the most experienced people there - odds are, he’d had to keep terrible secrets, and as steady as they seemed, he knew the potential for violence was there, and why. He may have kept a straight face while awake, but guilty or fearful thoughts haunted his dreams.

I don't think the people on that ship were having mass hysteria/hallucinations, but then it wouldn't be too hard for such a thing to occur when you're in the middle of nowhere for months. Also, no one felt bad for what happened to the captain and his management crew at the beginning considering how terrible they were and the company they were working for. But then Liu and his minions just went full psycho and started murdering random people on the ship

@TonksTheFool
@TonksTheFool 3 місяці тому
I have a bit of a theory about why they went psycho. Humans aren't actually equipped to kill each other, at least MENTALLY we're programmed to not want to do it; majority of us would not be able to handle the guilt over it, it'd just break us. But obviously, you hear stories of serial killers figuring out they like it and experimenting or random everyday joes suddenly snapping despite no prior red flags - the psychosis killing brings can be addictive regardless of which one you are, and added that 'International Waters' thing would supply them with much less consequence in their brains so it's easier to push it. They were probably on a major high, that can show as a power trip that the killing brings, and why it felt so ritualistic, like they were being accepted by each other. Or having a blackout where their brain shuts down what they're doing to protect their psyche. Unfortunately, that means more killing because the last thing they did was kill and they felt JUSTIFIED for doing it so it's like this odd dissociation where the logic doesn't come back to them until much later. Ofc I could be wrong, I just like psychology and I listen to a lot of true crime and what can bring a person to snap - none of it is concrete, I just know humans can be convinced to kill very easily as a 'way out' of impossible situations, even if deep down we know that's a cop out. Usually it's a high enough emotion they don't know how to control it - it comes in a feeling of pressure (usually self inflicted, sometimes not), then a bunch of environmental add ons will determine which way they go. But a bunch of strangers out at sea going on a spree is... I think it'd just take one person, like our ringleader, to start the frenzy for sure. By then they're already 'bonded by blood', so they perceive a sort of tribe mentality. Everyone outside it is a threat or victim, even if they didn't do shit. The mind is generally a weird thing. It's easy for people to be brainwashed into cults if you meet the right conditions needed for them, it's basically the same concept just at sea.
