Hi Scotty, I'm looking for a used sedan that strikes a good balance between speed, practicality, and long-term reliability. So far, I like the Lexus IS F (2011-14, RWD) with a 416-hp V8, the Acura TL SH-AWD (2012-14, AWD) with a 305-hp V6, and the Kia Stinger GT/GT1/GT2 (2018-present, RWD or AWD) with a 365-hp twin turbo V6. I know the IS F is generally the fastest, but the Stinger GT may be the most practical and comes in both RWD and AWD variants. However, the TL SH-AWD is quoted with the best gas mileage and has a manual transmission available. Which tends to be the most reliable? Which one would be easiest for a beginner to learn to repair and maintain himself?

Scotty you have confused me you say don’t use additives for oil and yet just a few days ago your saying buy this oil and fuel cleaner that is $50 online from a three letter name company. Do I do it or do I not do it? What about the stuff you did where you rev it for awhile? I am deciding how to maintain the engine and transmission and fuel system on a 1992 Lexus sc300

People want all the latest electronics available plus 10 air bags and auto pilot ,etc. Tiny little fuel sippers are out of the question ! I bought a 2000 Mustang with the 3.8 V6 engine, brand new. Automatic 4r79W transmission. A friend of mine owns a large repair shop, and told me that the 3.8 would not last 100,000 miles. It now has 263,000+ miles on it. I did all of my own service work myself, from day #1. The only time I took it to the stealership was at 34,000 miles, still under warranty, when I noticed a whine in the rear on deceleration. The was a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) about the rear axle, and my axle assembly was upgraded from the 7.5" axle to the 8.8" axle, normally found on the GT Mustang. It did not cost a cent. I've gone through 5 batteries, normal for that many years and miles. One idler pulley, and I just replaced the timing chain and tensioner, because I felt it was about time. Plugs and wires about every 18 months. the idler pulley was whining the last few months, making it sound like a power steering pump, which is still original. Do you think Tommy was wrong about the 100,000 miles?

Bought my 2013 Volkswagen a few years ago for $6000 with 157k miles it's at 167K. Still works great, only changed out front tires, battery, tune up, oil change twice a year, I guess I got lucky with my Jetta.
@thelonestranger777
@thelonestranger777 2 роки тому
I grabbed a manual 2012 base Jetta for 4100 during the first summer of the pandemic. I forgot the mileage but I'd guess around 120 and so far got 135k. Great daily to throw miles at. It's got the 2.slow engine in it but it gets me around town. Never had issues with it but there are some things I want to address. The main one being how sometimes my car is hard to start and keep running after filling my tank with gas. Other than that, I might need to replace the flex pipe on the exhaust as well. Take care of a car and it'll last you quite some time. If Jetta prices drop again, I wouldn't mind getting a newer one and passing this one down to my siblings.

@@Horizon301. I'd never want an Audi passed the b5 (maybe even the b6 if it's manual). Ironically my last daily before the Jetta was a a4 b5. It was in immaculate condition both inside and out with 163k on it. Unfortunately, I lost it to due to a reckless brake checker. Found the Jetta a few weeks later but still miss my Audi to this day. It might be kinda weird but I still think about that car every week 😭
@sloughsharkseh3307
@sloughsharkseh3307 2 роки тому
The truth is there are good and bad Volkswagons, the Jetta TDI's can last up to 3/4 million if maintained. I personally don't like them for the fact that they are too compact and cluttered to really work on much yourself, but they were good at getting miles. It also depends on the years, but for the most part, when people say an entire brand is bad, it usually comes from a couple specific models or years. Kind of like the fords from the early 2000's, the 6.0 and 6.4 were terrible diesel engines, and the 5.4 and v10 tritons from 2003+ were atrocious. So a lot of people see Ford as junk from then on. Scotty uses his experience which is sometimes biased and sometimes not very accurate. But it is better to take advice from people who like different brands, and group the information into one general conglomerate. That is the way I see it at least; but on any front, always double-check info/advice when you can, and never listen to just one person.

As a Brit, my favourite all time cars are older Citroen, only the ones with hyrdopneumatic suspension, if you're lucky, they're no more or less reliable than anything else. In the 90 upper end, luxury cars I've owned, I would have to say the 4 Japanese cars were the most reliable. a predictable answer I know, but true. Lexus LS 400, no problems, 2 Subaru Outbacks, no repairs or issues, and a Nissan Stagea (Skyline Estate) had to replace the AC compressor. I'm sure there are a few less good Japanese cars out there, but generally, if reliability is your top requirement, this is the way to go.

As an owner of a Prius (with 300K miles) and as someone who has repaired my drive battery and worked in the car front to back, I must disagree with you Scotty (first time for everything I guess). When looking for a used Prius, go for the newer one, even if it has twice the mileage of an older one. The Prius wants to be driven. Highway miles are nothing to a Prius. The drive battery will die from lack of use far before it will die of over use. It also really isn't that much more complicated than regular cars... Just different.

Even with a used Tesla, for about half the price or 1/3 the price of a new one, even if you needed to put a battery into it in say 5 years, it's still far cheaper than buying the new one and taking the depreciation hit. I do agree if you want a hybrid, get a Pirus. They've been making them since about the early 2000's so Toyota knows what they're doiong, and if you don't care about the battery, you can buy "rebuilt" batteries for as low as $1500. May only last 2 years but it's probably cheaper than making a $300 car payment every month.

We have a 2007 Prius we bought new. It has 289,000 miles. It has been a great car , just have to put up with the Prius jokes. Last winter we got the red triangle of death tell us the hybrid battery was bad. Yes I researched a reconditioned battery but then discovered UKposts video on how to. Replace individual modules with a Bluetooth plug it and a iPhone app. I scanned and it had two bad modules of the 14 . I purchase two used modules battery packs ($54 ea.) and replaced them myself using the UKposts video. Back on the road in Feb . And still running great.

@@sideup4041 The Prius used Nickel Cadmium cells which are cheaper than lithium Ion and don't requires extensive cooling. The 18650 lithium cells in the Tesla require charge shuffling to maintain the state of charge within a reliability window of 5-80% SOC. Newer Gel electrolyte chemistry like is used in the spiral wound 4860 cells being adopted next year will eliminate this longevity issue. But typically a well maintain and properly charged Tesla battery pack will lose 5% SOC over a ten year span. Each pack had sector modules that can be replaced, Just like the Prius. HI Scotty I love your content your always pretty funny. I'm a retired machanic too. I last worked at a general shop but the boss would take any Euro trash because he was british and a highway man by inclination. I just want to correct the order of your bad car list. This is a toss up but you should have said Jags first. All british cars are like something me and my friends would have built in the sixties hot rod days, they make cute sports cars that should be left in the driveway. Because if they leave home they are coming back on the hook is how the brits put it. I try to tell eveybody that brings something British to get a Miata they are red they are convertibles but you can expect Japanese cars to drive home after work if you just do normal maintenance. Oh toyotas are better but theres not so many toyota convertibles. then of course anything italian I've not worked on a lot of them but it was always a terrible experience. every time you leaned on a the car the fenders caved in or any other part you touched. they always had parts of the car that hung down to low so they hit the lift the unit body subframes were made out of aluminum soda cans. they were just horrible too. Plus the mazzaRaty were just like Jags the agency labor and repair costs were Extremely high so all of them were about $10k behind in maintenance and the customers thought the had got a good deal. Chrysler trucks are not so bad but of the big 3 they are next on the suspect list. It slipped my mind what the last car you didn't like was for a sec. Volkswagens I didn't hate them near as much you do. But i don't notice cautionary cars. I just try to hide from the nightmares. Its really bad because if you touch a wrench to a Brit or an Italian you get blamed for every problem the car has forever after. well cheers

@anthonyb.9336 2 роки тому
I disagree about VW here, to an extent. Scotty consjders a car as junk if you cannot get 250k miles out of it doing oil changes and wear and tear. You won't get that out of a VW, for the most part. A VW will go 150k trouble free miles and then expensive suspension parts will break and you will have some issues with direct injection. The transmission on a VW is good for 175-200k for an automatic (manuals will go forever) So if you buy a new car and want it for 150k miles then a VW is nice. The maintenance is pretty expensive. But if you expect it to go 250k trouble free miles it won't do that. Something exoensive is going to break. I used to criticize VW electrical issues with age but even Toyotas are going to have issues at 10-15 years. Too much plastic and computers on modern cars. Another thing to keep in mind is that Scotty bases his opinions based on servicing old cars. If a car manufacturer improves, his opinion will be delayed until he starts getting old ones with high mileage.

But his point is based on the longevity of a vehicle.. all or mostly all vehicles are great when they're new but how will it hold up after the warranty has run out.. and that's something that people who buy cars now a days need to know.. mainly because cara now a days are sooo expensive.. if you spend all that money buying a car then you want to know that 6yeara down the line you're not going to be dropping a small fortune on that same car because of issues that have been consistent in that car brand..
@anthonyb.9336
@anthonyb.9336 2 роки тому
@@TazCStorm and with a VW if you keep up with the maintenance, you should be okay till about 150k miles. After 150k miles some of the west and tear items will go and they are more expensive. Also most of their enginee are turbo so at that age you start running into common turbo engine problems. The Toyota he recommends is based on his expierence with a 15 year old Toyota and how they last forever. New Toyotas have all the same crazy computers and technology that is in a Lexus. They are contain a lot of plastic. Almost any car currently sold on the market is going to have expensive issues as they age. Scotty mentions that mileage matters not age howver, gasket seals and plastic are all agre related parts that wear out so age and mileage is important to consider when looking at a used car especially modern cars with lots of plastic parts.
@anthonyb.9336
@anthonyb.9336 2 роки тому
@@TazCStorm and that was mentioned in my lost. You can get 10 years out of a VW without major issues. It will start getting expensive at 150k miles. Every car these days are going to get stupid expensive at that mileage. Toyota had active lane keep assist, adaptace cruise control, accident prevention with full stop on every vehicle they sell. It's a lot of sensors and computers to break. Car manufacturers want these cars off the road so they can sell new ones. Gone are the days of a reliable $2500 junk car, anything made after 2012 is going to be expensive to fix as it ages.

The “strength” of the car doesn’t matter when it comes to safety. A strong car is usually deadly, as it puts the force of an impact onto the A pillar which then would be the weakest point, then collapse causing the passenger compartment to scrunch. That’s why newer vehicles reinforce the passenger compartment and soften the rest of the car. I’d rather my car crumple rather than myself.
