Turning rusty hexagonal steel bar into adapter bolts in the old trusty 1k62 lathe for the BMW E39 differential back plate since I cut off the original diff mounts in a previous episode. Cutting outer threads and drilling the bolts in the lathe but hand threading the inner threads. The original BMW bolts fit the adapters that make it possible to install the diff to a flat axle back plate I cut out on the homemade CNC plasma table (made by me and my friend @blackloopcnc9415 ). At the workshop I'm using FreeCAD drawing software, it is free and easy to use if you've had previous experience in other CAD programs. SheetCAM is my go-to program for converting CAD files into G-code that then gets used to cut out all the parts on the DIY CNC plasma. While making the BMW diff back plate I mess up the hole pattern and revisit the plasma cutter's hand torch and modify the freshly cut plate. The result is as expected - rough and ugly. I'm mocking up the axle so I can take measurements for the side plates for the bearing blocks. I have my reservations when it comes to these bearings - I guess these will be the first parts to fail and have to be replaced with something more reliable in the future. After the side plates are cut and tack welded I'm making a tubular frame from rusty rectangular tubing that gets cut to size on the cold cut circular saw / wet saw. After getting the tube frame done and the front of the diff mounted the axle is ready to slide front to back for load balancing purposes and for reducing tongue weight of the trailer. The tandem axle position will be adjustable with hydraulic cylinder mounted in between the frame rails. But all of that in the future videos. Stay tuned for the next episode & thanks for watching!
Trailer specs:
* 28x11-14" tires & 14" rims
* 1450mm/57" wide; length and height - unknown
* tandem axles with homemade chain housings
* BMW E39 530D differential with 2.81 gearing (identical to the UTV diffs)
* hydraulic crane with a boom & grapple for easier log loading & handling
* independent hydraulic power pack
* radio controlled hydraulic winch on the boom
* load capacity - 1-1,5 metric tonne

I think your shafts should be riding on TWO bearing on each side. You're putting a lot of weight on the internal bearings of the diff and I'm not sure if it will handle it-- since it's not really made for it to have that much radial leverage against it. Maybe I'm wrong and those bearings inside that diff are quite large.

I think I might have been tempted to have made the axle shaft hole in those bearing mounting plates bigger so if you ever need to get the differential out you'd have the option to pull the chain boxes off, remove the bearings, and get to the grub screws on the axle shaft locking rings. It's always handy to engineer in several ways to dismantle machinery. That way your life doesn't get made annoyingly interesting by one inaccessible rounded off bolt.
@willieshaw2522
@willieshaw2522 Рік тому
I thought the same thing. Looks pretty tight to get to the bolts that attach the outer axles to the axle stubs that go into the diff. You could probably drill an access hole through the side plate to access those bolts - IF you can still rotate the axles to line the bolts up with the holes.
@stetee4238
@stetee4238 Рік тому
I would have been tempted to delete the bottom of the side flange so you could just drop the whole transmission assembly to work on it away from the trailer

@craig2963
@craig2963 Рік тому
You can tack weld one of the round cut out blanks (8:32) from your plasma table over your access hole (8:48). Than use the plasma cutter by hand using the blank as a guide to keep the hole nice and round.
@davidp8157
@davidp8157 Рік тому
Then hole will be half the plasma torch tip bigger radius than the blank, that is diameter will increase by width of cutting tip because using blank as a guide is guide line and not the cutting line

Perfection. Hey when I was a Fitter/Machinist, Toolmaker, Welder & many others, when I was trying to spot holes to cut I was taught long ago that if you mount a bent piece of cardboard into a V as you are fitting a backing plate to it you put a dab of thick paint on the tip of the V so that when put the plate up against the irregular sized object it will mark where you need to cut out with your magdrill or holesaw. You could have done that with all of the bolt holes & the PTO hole. CAD with paint, Cardboard Aided Drawing with paint. Keep that in mind for future use.

If I may add one improvement from walking beam axle experience Weld some chains or some sort of stop to limit the travel of the chain cases As it stands there's nothing stopping the cases spinning a full 360 around the diff Not usually a problem but when you get into soft ground or even get bogged the front wheel can get pushed down and as you drive forward it simply rotates down rather than lift up It can be a real pain to get the front wheel to come up rather than end up going right under and becoming the back wheel Been there before when trying to pull a trailer and i ended up with the front tyre completely under ground and the back tyre up in the air Of course If you reverse the same thing happens just backwards

Looks like things are coming along. You may want to put a washer or two in place on that front diff mount so there is a gap later on, with such a tight fit later on when you break it down and weld then paint everything you will have a tough time getting the differential back into place. Anyway things take time to get done for sure. Currently replacing a roof on a house pretty much by myself and trying to find days that are decent to work has been a pain this year though I have one side almost completed. At the same time I am insulating the house, running electrical since the old system still had knob and tube wiring, installing datacomm, among other things while also living in the house. Sometimes it's a slow process but if you have to deal with something you do it a little at a time.

Box rotation must be limited, with chains in example. If wheel gets stuck on both sides all the torque will chose chain box to rotate, it can push stuck wheel into more stuck state. I can't fully imagine this kinematics, but limits are required and chains can be simply bolted and adjusted on the go, as needed

Love the idea. The end support bearings are still going to put a load on the diff it wasn’t designed for, it’s going to grenade. You’d be better off with a solid axle and narrowing it, also rather than tight telescopic square outer use rectangle with delrin plastic on the bottom side which pretty much eliminates need for grease although a skim coat on the plastic works even better.
