The story about Tom reminds me of an autistic friend of ours, save for the fact that Joshua doesn't have a lot of strength per se. This story successfully brought a 51 year old man to tears. God bless the person in that story for not letting the horrors from his encounter at age 9, dull his reason and compassion as an adult. This is one of my favorite stories I have ever heard on UKposts.

I'm also diagnosed with autism so that first story really did hit home for me. From the sounds of it; Tom has it way worse than I do so to hear this story really does make me happy for him. Most of these stories end either with sadness or an unresolved case so when something like this comes along it really is meaningful.

Loretta, that is such a lovely gesture of him. I would imagine it gives Tom peace of mind and great comfort to come “back home”, even if it is a day a week. I feel bad for Tom. I don’t think he understands why he doesn’t live their anymore or where his mother is. That’s truly heartbreaking for Tom. I am glad that they have struck up this unusual friendship.

I have mild but moderate autism and I just about sobbed at the first story, since my mother worked with people with special needs and did art classes with them. I would go there sometimes and help her set up and I would chat with the people who showed up early. One of them was an elderly women that I would talk about my cats with. It was the joy of my week until my mom quit because the company went under new management. (The new manager would single my mom out and is trying to demolish her art program even after she left.)

I have Asperger's Syndrome myself, high functioning. These kind of stories ALWAYS get to me, this, and movies like "Awakenings," "Radio," "Rain Man," etc. I have a hard time watching because they're just people who live in a world that can be extremely harsh beyond reason and seeing them suffer is just too much for me. I feel so bad for Tom but I am happy that the person made a deal with the facility. The fact he can visit his old home makes his LIFE not just his week. I think the mother couldn't be happier considering the situation.

Same with my little sister. Her brain was damaged at birth so she has trouble doing everyday things. We once went to a grocery store and we told her she could get a chocolate bar and told her where to go. I kept an eye on her. I had to tie my shoes so I told her to go in and il be right there. She was looking all around the building looking so confused and it made me want to cry.

A good piece of poetry to show that is "The crickets have arthritis" where some guy is admitted into a room with a small child in a hospital who is dying of cancer...
