Craft Aerospace, with $3.5M in funding, aims to do so with a totally new vertical takeoff and landing aircraft that it believes could make city-to-city hops simpler, faster, cheaper and greener.
The basic principle of a blown wing has been explored before now but never done on a production aircraft. You simply place a set of (obviously extremely robust) flaps directly behind the thrust, where they can be tilted down and into the exhaust stream, directing the airflow downward. This causes the craft to rise upward, then forward, and as it gets enough airspeed it can retract the flaps, letting the engines operate normally and driving the craft forward to produce ordinary lift.

▶ 2. Safran Hybrid-Electric Propulsion System
The VTOL Nexus, Bell is the first application of the Safran Hybrid-Electric Propulsion System (HELPS).
In a distributed hybrid electric propulsion system for aircraft, a turbo-generator (a gas turbine driving an electrical generator) is coupled to a set of batteries. This system powers multiple electric motors turning propellers to provide propulsion.
The power is efficiently distributed by a new-generation power management system, and the motors are controlled by a fully-integrated smart power electronics assembly.
Safran's hybrid electric propulsion roadmap is focused on bringing these technologies to the market by 2025.

This Hybrid Airplane Could Become the Tesla of the Skies.
The futuristic-looking Cassio 330, a four-seat configuration with propulsion from a combined hybrid-electric power of 330 kilowatts. As with the other members of VoltAero’s aircraft family, the hybrid-electric Cassio 330 brings safe, eco-friendly flight to enhance mobility and connect communities.
Initial deliveries are targeted for the end of 2022, beginning with the four-seat Cassio 330 version.
Performance
- Autonomy: 3.5 hours (extension possible to 5 hours)
- Range: 800 miles
- Cruise speed: 200 knots
- Take-off/landing distance: less than 1,800 feet
- Maximum takeoff weight: Under 2.5 metric tons (EASA CS23 certification)
- Availability: 10 hours/day (equivalent to approximately eight rotations daily)

Rolls-Royce and airframer Tecnam are joining forces with Widerøe - the largest regional airline in Scandinavia, to deliver an all-electric passenger aircraft for the commuter market, ready for revenue service in 2026. The project expands on the successful research programme between Rolls-Royce and Widerøe on sustainable aviation and the existing partnership between Rolls-Royce and Tecnam on powering the all-electric P-Volt aircraft.
TECNAM is pleased to announce a partnership with Rolls-Royce and major worldwide aviation players, including North American and European airlines for the development of the P-Volt: an all-electric, twin electric motor, Short and Medium Range passenger aircraft, designed for maximum versatility and safety, powered by renewable energy.

▶ 5. Pratt & Whitney Canada Advances Sustainable Hybrid-Electric Propulsion Technology
With Canadian government support, Pratt & Whitney Canada is moving forward with a project to equip a De Havilland Canada Dash 8-100 turboprop with a hybrid-electric propulsion system, with demonstrator flights scheduled to begin in 2024.
The new hybrid-electric propulsion technology will drive significant improvements in aircraft efficiency by optimizing performance across the different phases of flight, allowing the demonstrator to target a 30% reduction in fuel burn and CO2 emissions, compared to a modern regional turboprop airliner.
