The great thing about living in Porto (and probably Lisbon as well) is that navigating pretty much any other "hilly" place seems like a walk in the park afterwards, except for some Italian cities maybe.

We went to Lisbon in February a few years ago. Temperatures daily were low 50's to low 60's; we never had to make a reservation at a restaurant; the tram 28 was not crowded nor hot. In general, a very pleasant and comfortable experience. One of the best European cities to visit.
@stevo728822
@stevo728822 Місяць тому
I spent a month in Lisbon. I stayed in Sacavem, 8km to the north but it only took me 15 minutes by train to get into the city centre. The sidewalks are made out of chunks of Dolomite (manganese limestone). This makes them very hard wearing but slightly slippery even in dry weather. As a result, your feet are never getting a firm grip and it makes walking long distances arduous. Your feet will tire. Some hills are very steep so get a bus or tram to the top and walk down. Tram 28 is a bumpy ride. It's more comfortable getting the bus. The Belem seafront is much easier to walk because it's all flat. Go visit the technology museum and military museum on the Belem seafront. Hiring e-bikes and e-scooters are also an option. The best view of the city is from the Christ Statue on the opposite bank of the Tagus river. Get there by ferry boat and bus. Get the bus back over the 25th April bridge. Go eat at the ruined LX factory complex. Sintra is very hilly, so if you struggle with walking, I suggest Quelez Palace as an alternative. It's a Portuguese version of Versaille and it's all flat to walk around. You will see one of the earliest tennis courts in the gardens and it's where the Royal stables are located. The Oriente district is all modern with long cycling paths. Up towards the Vasco de Gama bridge you can see flocks of Flamingos. Central Lisbon is extra busy when the cruise ships come into dock. Nightlife is in Bairro Alto district. Pay a visit to the former Central Bank of Portugal. It's free to enter and you can touch a solid gold ingot behind bars in the vault. Carry coins on you. You will need them to use public toilets. And study how to order a coffee. The types of coffee they serve are not the same as in northern countries. A basic coffee from McDonalds in Lisbon is like a small expresso not a huge cup of watery coffee. If you really want to be adventuress, visit Thiep Senegal, a small but friendly African restaurant in the winding backstreets of Rossio.

We go to Lisbon every year as my husband has family there. We stay in the Alameda area as it’s not so touristy and has some great local restaurants. I can recommend a trip to Queluz Palace which is lovely and without the crowds of Sintra. Also really enjoy the Expo area in the evening, a great place for a riverside stroll, and the mall there is handy as it’s open until midnight.

I wouldn't put the hills in the hate category. For anyone that visited for instance Barcelona like myself, I almost felt claustrophobic, you're always under shade, you can't see past the next intersection, sometimes it feels difficult to know where you are going. I had this idea that it would be possible to see la sagrada familia from everywhere but you can't even see the tip one street before. Hills are what make Lisbon (and Porto) special, sunny and spacious, the river and the sea is visible from pretty much everywhere, barely any shade. The cobblestone sucks, not going to lie, I'm always slipping. My girlfriend broke her arm 2 weeks ago because of it

Love the video, can share similar experience we encountered when we visited Lisbon March, 2023. We were also approached by a guy asking about drugs, we said no thanks and moved on, no harassment of any kind. The hilly streets were also challenging for those not fit. The narrow streets were also something we aren’t used to.

Just got back from 4 nights in Lisbon...we loved it. I should have gotten a fado restaurant recommendation from you. The one we went to was good...but certainly a tourist trap. I can verify that spring break is a great time to go. The weather, while it was predicted to be rainy, was actually sunny for us and around 65 degrees. And, I imagine much less tourists than the summer. I didn't mess with taxis at all. Uber & Bolt were awesome and so reasonably priced.

Was there for a week last month. Walked all over. Nobody tried to sell me drugs (maybe because I'm in my 70s). Coming from a place that is flat, I loved the hills. Had no trouble getting on-line reservations for dinner at 7:30. I understand that Lisbon is not cheap for locals, but for tourists from the US, it is inexpensive, especially compared to the US and many European cities. That includes lodging, excellent food and good public transportation. Hoping to return.

I liked the sense of history and the friendliness of the people as well as the great weather. I loathed the “blind” accordion players on the metro. Those guys are not blind at all they “accidentally” barge into likely targets on the metro and then tap their white stick on something metal to summon their fellow gang members. Lucky for me the transit staff were already chasing them and I worked out what was going on before it was too late. You are correct about the hills and those tiled pavements. If you want to avoid the super crowded regular tram there is a more expensive restored tram that only does booked tourist trips of the city.
@woltersworld

Those guys were there when i lived there too 2 decades ago. Saw some blind people get really mad at them for giving people the wrong impression of blind people's abilities. It was pretty intense

I have seen while driving around the legal prostitutes on the side of the roads. but, i absolutely love Portugal. I recommend seeing as many castles as you can. Here's your chance to impress her while in Lisbon. If the weather is nice, take her to Quiosque do Adamastor (look it up on Google Maps). Start at the Bica funicular behind Time Out Market, take that up the hill, then turn left and follow the map to get there. Try to arrive a couple hours before sunset. The Quiosque is quite nice, and a huge crowd typically gathers there for the sunset. Great view of the bridge and the river at sunset. Afterwards, short walk to Bairro Alto for some partying.

The hills, and the slick pavement tiles are what I don’t like about Lisbon, and other parts of Portugal. Walking up the hills is okay because I’m fit, but walking down hills is very hard on my knees, coupled with the slippy tiles is nerve wracking, as are the taxi rides with crazy drivers. Other than these, it’s my favorite European country.

The only thing that made it less than great was another tourist that accused me of taking photos of someone I could't even see from where I was standing. I'm not I violent person but I had to walk away so I didn't clock him infront of his family. 🤬 Edit: He didn't even apoligize when I showed him my photos which clearly wasn't of what he accused me of photographing.

I was in Lisbon earlier in the month and before I even got from the Marques De Pombal metro station to my hotel was approached 4 or 5 times by the fake drug scammers in the space of about 15 minutes. I got used to ignoring them throughout my trip but it was an minor annoyance - the Avenida da Liberdade was pretty bad for it. Apart from that I really enjoy Lisbon and I actually really like walking up the hills to the various miradouros (viewpoints) and just wandering about in general. Weather when I was there was awful in terms of periods of torrential rain but was still enjoyable. Managed day trips to Cascais and Sintra without getting drenched. Went inside the Pena Palace in Sintra but it wasn't really enjoyable due to the sheer numbers of people and that was on a Weds in March and and with a timed appointment slot. The Moors Castle and The National Palace of Sintra were much more enjoyable as was the walk from the station up to the castle. But Lisbon itself is a great city and hopefully I will be back soon and hopefully the weather will be better.

Portugal may be affordable from a tourist point of view but not for the locals that live on a Portuguese salary. Plus the people who live in Lisbon don’t go to tourist areas, they go to work. They have to pay rent, electricity, taxes and they also have a family to feed. 04:35.

From a tourist point of view what he said is objectively true, Lisbon is a cheap city compared to alot of other European capitals. When it comes to locals not being able to afford living in Lisbon, unfortunately this happens all over the world where locals are pushed out of capital cities due to cost of living.

Still surprising, I was actually just thinking about that last week, wondering why it *didn't* happen considering how relatively lax Portugal's drug laws are compared to many other European countries.

I wouldn't call Portugal's drug laws "lax". Portugal decriminalized the use of drugs, but it is still illegal to buy and sell. If you're down by Pink Street at night, you'll see the guys with the "fanny packs" working the tourists. My experience is that they are not aggressive, at least not the guys I encountered. You're right, though, they do tend to gravitate to men.

Also for the last 25 years or so they have been in European Union which uses English as the common language of communication so since that time English is taught in schools

English is taught in portuguese schools since... forever. I was born in the 60s and in mid 70s I was learning English and French in the public school. We are not fresh out of the dark ages, you know?

We know how to speak English not because of school, but because films and everything from abroad are subtitled and not dubbed like many countries.

I haven't been to Lisbon for some years, but what I hated the most was the powerty, that made people come to you at an outdoor restaurant and beg for the left overs from your plate.
@grizfan93
@grizfan93 Місяць тому
that must have been very long ago. I lived in Lisbon for about 16 months and never saw that or anything approaching that.
