It’s heartbreaking to think Tolkien jr hated the movie adaptations as so much love and respect was poured into them. There are many people who likely picked up the books (or audiobooks) after watching the movies who never would have otherwise. It’s also probably the only movie trilogy where literally everybody was flawlessley cast. It could never have worked had a single main or even supporting cast member been replaced.

#29; slight correction. The stunt woman could afford the horse, but due to her position on the crew, she believed the horse would have been bought by a socially higher up crew member before she'd get the chance. She relayed her fears to Viggo, whom as part of the cast was one of the first to get a chance. He purchased the horse, and when the stunt woman confronted him about it, thinking he'd swiped the horse from her, that was when he presented to her as a gift.

@@nenadpopov3601 I'm a Tolkien geek from way back...mid '70's...and my first viewing of the movies I was a little stunned. It was much bloodier than my imagination had made it when reading. However, when I picked up the books again, especially Return of the King, Tolkien describes the enemy catapulting the heads of the Gondorian soldiers back over the walls of Gondor, etc. There's quite a bit graphic in the books. The major flaw in Jackson's depiction is how frail Frodo is. I've been reading the books again this month, and Frodo was pretty badass. And Gimli treated as comic relief also bothers me. But he did an amazing job with the AGE of Middle Earth in the movies. I really appreciated the backgrounds and sets, the costumes. Fact number 51: The current Queen of Denmark, Margrethe the 2nd, has illustrated the Lord of the rings and the Hobbit books under the name Ingahild Grathmer. I agree. I bought the trilogy a while back and watched it after having ready the books. Often, I've been disappointed with film adaptations of books I've read as too many producers make the mistake of straying too far away from the source material. Peter Jackson did a good job of telling the story as it needed to be told in film, while still keeping true to the spirit of the story in the books. My main disappointment between them was the way Lord Denethor was portrayed in the film as a crazy, petty numbskull, when in the books he's actually quite strong and wise, and only falls into madness after he believes both his sons are dead or soon will be and he makes 1 last use of his Palantiri and is finally bested by Sauron. In the books, it's shown he matched wills with Sauron via his Palantir for some time and held his own, only breaking in the end when it seemed is family was ruined. If you haven't read the books yet, I'd highly recommend it, you'll love them as much as you loved the films.
@Seriously_Unserious

@@frankgrimes7388 You're entitled to your opinion, but I found the movies did a good job of translating the story from a book format to a movie format. That's not the easiest thing in the world to do and they managed it. There were a few things I would have liked to have seen done better but it's not bad. I've seen film adaptations of books that didn't even follow the story from the book, and only shared the title with the book. Clive Cussler's Sahara comes to mind. One thing I'd have loved to see done better in the movies would have been a better portrayal of Denethor II. In the books he's a very intelligent and strong leader, who only breaks after both his sons died within a few months of each other. In the movies, he's a stupid, conniving idiot who does nothing to prepare for the war he knows full well is coming. Other things that would have been nice to see, like the part of their journey through the Old Forest and the meeting of Tom Bombadil, but they only had so many hours to fit the story in so I can understand why things like that had to be dropped. There's a few other things, mostly minor and mostly understandable why they had to do it the way they did. So what's your main reasons for feeling the movies were rubbish?

@@AdamFloro I guess we all have different tastes in what we find interesting. I liked the old forest section for the most part. There was plenty of tension with the hobbits trying to navigate the woods and having the trees and brambles re-arranging themselves to keep forcing the hobbits deeper into the Old Forest created a bit of a spooky vibe to the area. What sort of power was forcing them to go the wrong way? That scene for be brought up shades of Mirkwood from The Hobbit.

I've been raised seeing the films, and even if I've finished reading the books only recently, I knew for a long time they were some sort of more simple and "cinematic" ( in the worst sense of the word ) adaptation, made to please a wider public. I mean, they're incredibly good, but they're obviously cutting hardly through the story. That's why I really won't say that would have please Tolkien himself. Though, I don't think they could have done better, and we probably will never have a better adaptation neither since nobody's gonna have the same faith and dedication to put in this project again with more time and budget ( which would be necessary to beat it ). That's the reason I still love the films, despite the fact the books are way better. Jackson did well and brought, it's true, a lot of people to take interest in the books and to get deeper than "simply" watching the movies. + Tolkien would certainly have love the music score. As long as Amazon hasn't ruined the Middle-Earth yet, he must be resting in peace.

I enjoyed the movies for what they were but didn't feel they accurately captured the mood of the books. A big part of that was New Zealand, very pretty but not at all middle Earth's forests nor mountains. Here are some more. 1. Christopher Lee not only met JRR Tolkien, but he was actually friends with him. Tolkien told Lee if they ever made a live action version of the Lord of the Rings he wanted him to be in it. 2. JRR Tolkien wrote the books because he believed that Britain had no mythical stories of their own. All the British myths that were around were based on other countries stories. So he decided to write something himself. 3. JRR Tolkien wrote quite a bit of the story to Lord of the Rings whilst he served in the British army during the first world war. He used to keep a notebook which he wrote things in. 4. A lot of people believe JRR Tolkien is British but he was actually born in South Africa 5. JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis used to be friends and help each other with their writing. They had what they called their own book club.Their friendship later soured. 6. Orlando Bloom was a huge fan of a TV show in the UK called Midsummer Murders. It is a detective series. After he did the Lord of the Rings trilogy and after the first film was released, he made it known to the producers he was a fan of the show and would love a part in the show. He got his wish and they put some Lord of the Rings references in the episode. 7. To get the cast to know each other before they started shooting. Peter Jackson arranged for some of the cast members to travel together to New Zealand. Dominic Monaghan was told he would be travelling from the UK with Actor Orlando Bloom. They never met but as soon as Dominic saw Orlando get on the plane he knew it was Orlando and they became great friends on the flight. 8. JRR Tolkien started writing the final book The Silmarillion, but died before he could finish it, so his son finished it.

Continuation on Fact 20, Viggo insisted on that for his armor as well, Chainmail made for an adult male weighs something around 15-20lbs, or 7-9 kilos, and he wore that shooting action scenes while wielding a real steel sword weighing probably another 5-6lb, or 2.5~ kilos. If I remember correctly Sean Bean also followed Viggo's example, so the fact about him hiking and climbing the mountains to the shoots is a bit more impressive. Learned that from the staff at Wheta Workshop down in Wellington a couple years back, where fun fact, they have a working Warthog from the planned Halo movie that never went anywhere.

It is very easy to assume that Sam’s eventual journey to the undying lands meant he would see Frodo again, but sadly this almost certainly would not have occurred. The name “undying lands” implies that all who journey there won’t die, but this is only true for elves who are already immortal, while for mortals time actually seems to pass more quickly than in middle earth. Frodo would have grown old and died long before Sam arrived, but I’m sure Sam still loved getting to see the place before his own death.

Recommend the commentary as well! Yet to watch them myself but I saw like 30 min on my DVD and there was a lot of funny info. But also lots of banter and Dominic and Billy would make up a lot of facts as a joke, so don't take their word for everything they say in the commentary XD Christopher Lee is also the hugest nerd in the commentary "Did you know" kinda facts from him and stuff. Can't wait to watch the rest. There's 3 different commentaries: Cast (all the actors who played the main Hobbits, Sean Bean, Christopher, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, and Bernard Hill are the one's I heard) then there's the directors commentary and lastly the art and set department commentary. So 12 hours? No, if you count all the commentaries you get almost 24 hours of special features for at least the first movie. It's just amazing!!

They didn't only do that thing with the helicopter pilot to mess with Sean Bean... but also to joke with the other Sean, Mr. Astin, as he was messed with so much for basically being the whole safety team XD he would regularly go up to the pilot and ask things like "how many years have you flown" "what's the casualty rate" and pretty much babysit the security and safety people because he didn't trust them to keep the crew and cast safe haha. I am religious about Behind the scenes of the LotR so this video is very nice to watch! I just can't get enough.
