Lou has learned so much while building three different shipping containers that have become our first family home. In this video, he describes the entire process of going from a shell of a container to a fully insulated, water-tight structure with windows and doors within just 7 days.
Lou and I are big believers in dividing work. Lou is in charge of the entire construction process, while I take care of our son Max. So for me, this was such a special video to watch. I learned so much about his building process, what he's learned during the container build, and the intricate details of our home in a way I didn't know before.
I hope you found this video insightful too, and if you're in the midst of a shipping container project, we'd so love to hear your thoughts! Between diy spray foam install, using non-toxic hemp wool insulation, or copious amounts of sealant, everyone creates their own off-grid build style, and it would be so cool to hear what we have in common :)
Big hugs,
Dana

What an awesome idea for a Tiny Home. Wonder if u could put them on top of each other. I'd do a 40 ft on bottom & 20 ft top and left over roof space a deck. So cool.

I’m chasing down the Sunday morning chores, squeezing in a wild swim, and then I will spend the day in my kitchen catching up with produce from the greenhouse and the garden… making pickles, baking zucchini muffins, blanching & freezing green beans (so many beans), and making pasta sauce to freeze for winter (so many tomatoes). I know I will appreciate all of this come winter time although, truthfully, I can think of things that are much more tempting to do such as sewing, knitting, riding my bike, and other hobbies. With that said… I must admit that when I am not in the kitchen or outside… you know where I can be found? You guessed it… I’m in my office. Oh, the joy of having space to think, create, and organize one’s life!! I just know you both will love the luxury of a whole ‘nother container space that allows for all your creative enterprises. I’m going to watch today’s video later this evening when I can put my feet up and enjoy without interruption. This high school sewing teacher is getting ready to go back to school in two weeks so I must indulge in my Sunday evening pleasures while I still can. Two Sunday’s from now I will be packing my lunch and ironing my dress shirts… UGH!! Thanks for today’s great video. Lotsa Love, Ⓜary🇨🇦💦🍅

So my thought is that it would be better to use angle iron to build the window frames instead of the 3” plate steel that you did. 2 reasons. First it is more structural than the plate. Second it would create a nice flush frame on the inside that you can hide a ton of sealant behind. Thoughts?

See I would raise the floor slightly or have the whole thing raised up so there is a pocket under the whole container or flooring. I say this because I'd there is a pocket you can build a furnace that leads to the pocket of empty space, hot air would go into the space and heat the floor. Simple heated flooring that only requires to burn some wood

In regards to the sealant and waterproofing stuff i I find that using too much makes it less sealed. Just like excessive silicon caulking when you use too much the wash gets destroyed and doesn’t last. It’s much better to just use the right amount and press in to the area being sealed and remove excess. In many years of experience I have noticed that over use of sealant causes the sealant to break down faster and lose seal. Don’t use too much everyone. Not only does it look bad but it effects the longevity of the seal!
@mncitizen4364
@mncitizen4364 11 днів тому
Rather than creating a separate sealant post, I would like to add to this effort. I use this urethane based ILO the silicone type mainly because it's paintable. If you ever get silicone sealant on anything, it's a bear to get off and very difficult to get paint to stick to it. So, I fully agree with the above post. Enough is just the right amount. The excess can be rubbed away with a paper towel saturated with isopropyl alcohol solvent. If no alcohol, I have had really good luck with a one or two inch wide strip of plastic bag polyethylene, maybe a foot long for ease of use, or longer if no wind. After sealant is pushed into the fillet, lay the plastic strip down over the sealant and gently push it into the fillet. Sounds weird, but it works. A week later, pull the plastic strip off. It will come off easily once the sealant is cured.

Here in my country, the technicians do it very differently, nothing frame on the inside, chipboard is attached with sheet metal screws, the screws are filled, from the outside a metal frame made of square tubes 30x30mm is welded all around the Countainer, sheets are welded at the bottom so that nothing gets in ants, moise, and water, then fill it with down plates, you know these green steropur ungaefer 50mm thick, these are also normally used when building houses then you can cover it with whatever you want, stone, wood, plaster To process plaster, use a wire mesh with holes ungaefer 50x40mm, these are welded, and over it a huener wire with very small holes, which is connected with wire, then throw a hand of plaster cement with sand on it, when it is dry, the cement sand and lime or white marble sand, you can also use finished plaster, in bags So you have clean space inside, oh don't forget a roof is built over the container, either with sheet metal or with original roof tiles, raw or yellow like sand color

@@WildWeRoam northeast Washington state is on fire. I'm safe for now but the smoke has been awful. Raining now. Much improved. The sound of the pitter patter and hum of overhead airtankers is soothing. Many lost everything or are displaced. Tens of thousands of acres of destroyed forest not to mention the wild ones who called it home. I'm one of the lucky ones so far. It's 13 miles from me. It's all about the wind direction. Another in a string of human caused fires. As a society we must do better. We must be more vigilant and reduce our carbon footprint significantly. You know... ❤️

As a retired builder it looks like you have gone way over the top with the insulation and also the amount of space lost with the stud work , if you had of used metal studs and reflected insulated board inside you could have gained about 3 inches around the whole room and of course you can always insulate from the outside as well adding to the appearance of the container as well

No offense bud, but welding dirty metal causes some pretty nasty impurities that will break the weld down much faster than most realize. I had to prove my point to an 83 year old farmer 3 times before he left me alone, because quite frankly, my work never needed fixed except where i welded on dirty metal. Still a very impressive project and timeline. Especially the timeline. Keep making!
