7 Orca Encounters That'll Brighten Your Day. Killer whale or Orca encounter are some amazing moment for who is lucky enough to live it. You'll see 7 orca encounters in this video, a Wild Orca encounter at the Bay of Islands, a raw footage of NOAA researchers tagging orcas with cross bows (killer whales) in Antarctica, Luna, a wild orca, plays with his human friend and many more encounters.
Orcas (or killer whales) are large, powerful apex predators. In the wild, there have been NO RELIABLY VERIFIED FATAL ATTACKS ON HUMANS. In captivity, there have been several non-fatal and four fatal attacks on humans since the 1970s.

The story of Luna isn't a happy one. That's a young male, part of the Southern Resident Community of orcas L Pod and was known as L98 on records but given the nickname Luna. Sadly over a winter, the pod lost five members, and Luna at age 2 ended up separated finding their way into a river system. Luna however was old enough to feed himself and was monitored and in good health. Plans were made to try and guide him to his surviving pod mates and back to his mother Splash (L67) by louring him in a large floating pen that would be tugged by a boat to keep him safe and guide him along to where his family was spotted. But then people started getting in the way. Started going out to play and pet the young orca and with Luna being a youngster of 2 years at the time started interacting back. This made Luna stay and view boats and people as friends to approach. This is NOT good for a wild orca. It was made worse when a tribe of the area whose Chief passed claimed Luna to be the incarnation of their Chief and would get in the way and sabotage all attempts rescuers would make to reunite Luna with the remainder of their pod by going out onto the waters in small boats and lour Luna away or try to hide him in smaller coves. Luna would end up staying 4 years in that river with many attempts made to try and return him to his pod, but people would not leave him alone. Even with laws and fines in place to try and prevent people from playing with him, it didn't stop people from still trying to play, pet, and get him to chase their boats... People wanted him to stay for the commodity of 'having an orca live there' and so they could play and interact with the 'friendly orca'. In 2006 at 6 years old Luna was killed after being sucked into the propellers of a tug boat that he was seen swimming up to play with like he often did with smaller boats... (Edit: Toy clarify, the tug boat was not moving, it was sitting idle with its prop moving to keep it from drifting in the river current, it was waiting to tug a larger logging vessel out once it was finished loading. These boats are not commonplace and it was the first time Luna had seen one... and well.. got too close.) If people would have just left him alone and let the rescuers do their jobs Luna may still be alive and well back with his pod as a healthy 21-year-old bull today... The sad thing is, the Southern Resident Community of orcas are endangered. The loss of Luna back then reduced the number of males to just two individuals... (thankfully that number had gone up) between all three pods that make up this species of orcas (there's 10 subspecies) only 73 some of them still exist as of 2022, with only two new births reported this year. For this population, every member counts. (Edit: While I can't offer a link as youtube will auto delete comments with links. You can search up 'orca luna documentary' and find several clips and a full-on well, documentary on Luna's venture. There's even a plaque put up in his memory.) While on the subject, do take this time to look up info on orcas! Did you know there are 10 subspecies? Each with their own diet, behaviors, ecosystems, markings, and body shapes! Luna, was a Resident Orca! Of the Southern Resident group, strictly fish eaters nomming on chinook and salmon! The Southern Resident group is made up of 3 famaly pods, J, K, and L. Luna was from L pod, with only 73 orcas across all three pods.

@@ricki-bobby Indeed. theres a video documentry you can search for and find that covered the events and it shows footage of those fools getting in the way of each resuce attempt. (id link it but youtube has been auto deleting comments containing links x.x) Them plus just people in general that lived there wanting to play and keep Luna there for their selfish enjoyment is what got Luna to think boats and peop,e were fun things to play with, to the point that with the laws in place Luna would get into trouble and cause damage when people were forced to ignore him. It was just a sad chain of events that would never have happend if people would have left him be and let those trying to help well, help.

You dont know why? Media, money, distractions. TV. Politics. Schooling. Work. The rat race. Everything that is soooo “vitally important”, that we didn’t ask to be a part of, but that we are born into. Not saying this modern day society is impossible to sustain. We know there’s a will and a way. But sadly, the rat race, as a whole, distracts the masses. That’s why the beauty of nature isn’t always appreciated fully. Scratch that… it IS appreciated, I think; sure, lots of people love animals or plants or gardening… but if you’re like me, & you truly see the beauty; become one with a subject or a passion…I.e, get SUPER into it, & actually retain facts & information… or become experienced at raising animals or growing plants, thats when you try to talk to “like-minded” people, but the people look at you like deer in the headlights. Like you’re a hippy or something. It’s like, no; I just know stuff. I thought you did too.. so, nvm I tell them. lol

There’s no such thing as mistaken identity with orcas, these are not dumb sharks that just go about trying to eat anything that moves, they are picky eaters to the point where their echolocation lets them distinguish king salmon, which they prefer as it’s the fattiest one, from other types of salmon, and they don’t waste their energy test biting stuff; they know exactly what they want and it ain’t our chewy bone and muscle bodies.

In 2019, my ex-gf and I were among the beach goers that participated in trying to save beached orcas in Argentina. I can't remember the name of the city but I think it's Mar Chernita or Mar Cheriza. We dumped sea water, we collected using buckets, on one of the orca's head to keep its skin moist and that's when we noticed a scar on the upper rear end of its right eye. It was shaped like an inverted "V" and very distinct. In 2020, we were at Redondo Beach, CA on paddle boats when we encountered a pod of orcas. When one of them surfaced, we immediately noticed the distinctive inverted "V" scar and I can't believe we encountered the same orca from just 9 months back. Amazingly, the orca hung around us while gently pushing our boards separately. It left for 5 minutes and returned with what appeared to be a big fish dangling over its mouth. It hung around us for good 20 minutes making all kinds of noise. Finally before re-joining the rest of its pod, it's tail scooped up some sea water and flung it towards us. I don't know what to make of the encounter but I'll remember this the rest of my life. I was told orcas have excellent memory. So I'm thinking it remembered us. Maybe it's trying to thank us????

This is actually not uncommon behavior for orcas. The only time they've ever killed humans was during their time in Sealand and Seaworld. There are no recorded orca attacks from out in the wild. They may be called killer whales, but they do not have any sort of taste for humans. In fact, they're nothing more than oversized, panda-bear cosplaying dolphins. They're very playful and very smart. So don't worry: if you're swimming and you see an orca, you're completely safe so long as you don't agitate it.

@Martyntd5
@Martyntd5 Рік тому
///Orcas are apparently so smart.../// They are, but I think it has more to do with 100,000 years of evolution. For the same reason most apex predators leave humans alone. Whenever they have killed humans, we usually hunt down the individual responsible and kill them, which removes the 'humans are food' individuals from the gene pool, leaving only those that don't see us as food to propagate. The result is a species that could easily kill us, but simply isn't instinctively triggered to hunt us, like they are with seals, penguins and wotnot. I still wouldn't exclude the possibility that one day an Orca will eat a human just to see what we taste like. If there are enough human/orca encounters, I'm sure it would/will happen.
@Yetiiii
@Yetiiii Рік тому
@@Martyntd5 1. Only on land, in the oceans for last thousands years we didn't kill man-eating dolphins, so it's the wrong theory. And even on the land it doesn't work very well. 2. It will not happen, they are too smart. The last deliberate orcas attack on humans in the wild (not counting mistakes and captivity) occurred in 1910 during the Terra Nova Expedition; it was on the ice floe - but eventually they ate the mule and leaved people alone. From the beginning of XX c. they kinda decided not to attack humans - and their language allowed to spread the decision across the oceans. Just look, as the only real apex predator on Earth they attack everything but humans, from blue whales to polar bears, including birds and land animals like mooses in Alaska. Everything within reach of the jaws - except humans (and dogs when they are with us), despite very frequent meetings in the water. It simply must be intentional.

Reason you dont hear about Orca attacks is likely cause Orcas leaves no survivors and likely the human they went after broke the treaty How can you report a Orca attack if there is no one left to report it's a orca attack? It's like that one line in Pirates of the Caribbean. Curse of the Black Pearl. When the pirates are discussing the pearl. . Leaves no survivors. No survivors you say? Then where do the stories come from I wonder.

I love the Whole Cetacean family. Having written a thesis on the relationship between Dolphin and Human they are quite possibly more intelligent than we are given their environment. The only tool or weapon a human really has is it’s brain, and the Orca is one very big Dolphin that can X-ray you with sonar and quite possibly stun prey with their sonar to. The blasted US government has used Dolphins to attach mines to the bottom of ships. Let these beautiful noble creatures be free. Lovely video incidentally.

I don't know why you decided to single out only the U.S., because several other countries (who I would rank higher on the nefarious scale) used many sea mammals. Russia, and Iran in particular, as well as reports of Israel. Ukraine used to have a program before Russia illegally took over Crimea. Dolphins, seals, and beluga whales are the most popular, with seals being noted for their "professionalism" ☺. Also, there is no proof of them being used to attach mines. It would be way too risky to do that. The Russians learned that lesson while using dogs to slide under tanks in WWII that would trigger a switch on their back to explode under the tank, unfortunately (or deserving for using a animal in this way) the dogs were more familiar with Russian tanks so they would often go under the wrong tanks (or did they? "Woof, from Russia with love, "comrad"" 😁). What they are certainly used for is rescue of people, locating mines and equipment, guarding ships and harbors from enemy divers (spotting and signalling their presence), and recon. The U.S. takes very good care of them with teams of trainers and veterinarians who bond with them. There are some unsubstantiated reports of training them to attack, by attaching spikes to dolphin noses or even hypodermic needles with compressed air, though many experts have said it was impossible to train them to attack humans, so who knows. It would be terrifying if they could train leopard seals and orcas, though. There was also a somewhat outlandish claim of a dolphin or seal with camera and remote control harpoon gun, a bit unsettling. Or how about [Doctor Evil voice] "sharks with fricken laser beams" 🤭

It never ceases to amaze me that these Apex predators do not eat humans. I mean, we are always in the water, and when you see that they eat seals--which also have heavy boney bodies--we should be on their menu. When you add to that the way 'researchers' are always hurting them by stabbing them with tags and trackers, you would think they would grow to resent us.
