In this video I show tools to find out, how a unknown electronic device works. I start with a Multimeter, continue with a Digital Storage Oscilloscope (DSO), and end up with a modern Logic Analyzer.
The goal is to build an enhanced electronic load with a nice touch display and data logging. Could have used an Arduino, but decided to use an ESP8266 because I wanted to have a wireless connection on the bench. And maybe, we will be able to replace the display with a web interface?

really great... I 'm also trying to find a cheap alternative to a Scalar NEtwork Analyzer to measure my ham radio antennas, like a KC901H, but I don't need all that and It's too expensive for amateur usage.
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 7 років тому
This is a different topic and I think, there are some videos around for this topic. They use a noise source, a directional coupler, and a SDR radio. But still, not really cheap...

friend, this is very helpful. How do I implement these findings? so if I use logic analyzer to read a BUS, how do I program a new microcontroller with that same code that you read from logic analyzer?

Hast Du eigentlich keine eigenen Webseite? Gruss aus dem Berner Oberland ;-)
@AndreasSpiess

The Art of Electronics (www.amazon.de/Art-Electronics-Paul-Horowitz/dp/0521809266). Das ist allerdings Englisch, teuer und dick. Da findest du allerdings fast alles (analog und digital).

7:44 I bought this logic analyzer before seeing this video, it’s yet to be delivered. Which software to use then?
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 2 роки тому
Saleae software works but legally is not allowed for clones. Sigrock Pulseview is open source.
@arthurmorgan8966
@arthurmorgan8966 2 роки тому
@@AndreasSpiess thanks. That makes me wonder if this software pings home, like Solidworks does. If it’s a domain connected computer, they know it’s not home use and then you will hear from their sales/litigation team.

@@AndreasSpiess on another note I was thinking, to understand how oscilloscopes work better, maybe one way is to implement a simple one (not an actual use one). Do you think one can be made with something like ESP32?
@AndreasSpiess

Microcontrollers usually are too slow to build oscilloscopes.

You can get a clone logic analyzer for $5 to $7, postpaid. The $15 shipping fee from the seller in the current link above is outrageous. But things change rapidly on this site, so just look around. It used to be possible to search for Salae on AliExpress, but that was stopped a few months ago. Now you just have to search for USB Logic Analyzer. The 8 channel 24MHz products are probably all made by the same manufacturer. The Salae software works great on them.
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 7 років тому
Thanks for your feedback. Salae software must not be used with the clone devices (see license agreement)
@alterratz665
@alterratz665 6 років тому
I recommend using the cheap clones with pulseview (which is part of sigrok sigrok.org). This way you get a really affordable tool and do not steal software from saleae. Also ist is really easy to write plugins for sigrokdecode. This allows even low level protocols like I2C to be used as input to a high level analyzer, so you can easily decode information in idividual registers. Thank you for your videos. I find them quite useful. Greetings from Austria, the country without kangaroos :-)
