I get really sad knowing we’ll never see this quality of Idol ever again. Such a gorgeous moment in time (seasons 4 through 6).

I was watching this with three of my clients in my home salon....by the time she was half way through it....all three of us were in tears! That might be the single best performance on any singing competition ever! Her voice is so rich and full and all three of her ranges are beautiful! She does very little movement with her body when she sings, but she gives you every emotion or feeling with her facial expressions. Katherine is physically beautiful, so she gives you everything from sweet and innocent to warm and sultry. Her tone is pure, controlled and delicious! She's one of my very favorites🥰

And now in 2023......still awesome!

@@gregw98 for me, both versions are very beautiful. They are in two completely different settings too, which will give a different feel to each. Katherine was in a competition in front of millions of people and still she emitted an amazing tenderness in her performance. Eva had the freedom to slow it down and emote even more in her setting.

She said later on in an interview that her ear piece failed and was screeching in her ear. She did a beautiful job!

The ear piece was just to give her the 1st note from a piano, then the next week when she sang the song again in the finale it did mess up.

I also rooted for her. The voice ,the looks ,the attitude. Shes got it all

I could not have said it better. She is just a n incredible talent. I watch this probably twice a week. I of course loved the Judy Garland rendition, but IMHO Katherine may have done it better. WOW, just freaking WOW!

Absolutely. This performance was the best of the season and one of the best of all time on American Idol. At this point on Idol, the fifth season, I think a lot of people, voters, were wanting to almost discredit the show by voting Taylor Hicks the winner. This culminated again with Sanjaya the next season. It's really pathetic on a lot of people's parts and I'm sure there was some production that went on that didn't help Katharine either. While it would've been phenomenal for her to have won, she does have a much better sustained career than Taylor to this day, so kudos to her. Katherine also struggled with good song choice consistently throughout the season, and trying to do too many melismas, runs, riffs etc aka oversinging. Here's the thing, it's not that she can't do them, it's her consistency and accuracy that can be subpar plus the musicality of them isn't always the best. This was the first time where all of those things were damn near spot on and she used the right amount in the right places. Unfortunately, she gave the best performance of the season the week before the finale, and when you peak before the climax...yeah. If Simon is really what he portrays himself to be he should've sat her down and said sweetie, you've got to love your natural voice and talent and stop trying to sing like Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera (particularly Aguilera) because of the aforementioned reasons. But I digress... this performance is a 9/10 easily. The only downfall I have with it, is when she cracks into notes, so unnecessary; 1:18, 1:40, 1:43, 1:46, and the final two words, but again I digress. I love Katharine McPhee still to this day. I bought her first album, loved her on Smash and I see she has a new show on CBS coming out so she's doing well.

I'm glad she didn't win, because it excelled her career instead. Look at where all the winners have gone...most in the garbage chute

Her Theatricality was, and still is, her strongest asset.

I completely agree with you. I really don't understand why she didn't win. Taylor was nothing in comparison to her.

@@sarahlminor3734 Taylor was a good - but not great singer - but certainly paled compared to Katharine. He won because he was so quirky and charismatic. He made himself the underdog and people bought it. In the end, Kat is celebrated with having one of the best voices in Idol history whilst Taylor has been largely forgotten.

@@theoutsiderspost4982 Haley Reinhart was such an underrated talent... I've followed her career since then and been so shocked she's never really made it big. What an incredible voice and performance quality she has.
