I grew up in rural GA on a farm. Did not have electricity as a child. Grew most of our own food and raised animals. Had Kerosene lamps, an outhouse, and used wood for fire. It was a beautiful existence. I just did not know it at the time.

Revisiting this essential TED talk and it's been almost a year since the February Texas grid failure. The event caused over 700 deaths and many many people were without water, heat and food for a week. BE PREPARED my fellow citizens.

The real solution to most of these problems is decentralization. Centralization is usually very efficient at doing or producing ONE thing, and very bad at doing everything else. Moving to a decentralized model of energy production, storage, and distribution will increase the robustness of the system many times over, for a (relatively) small decrease in efficiency.

I told a few people about this and you know what their response was? "Nah thatll never happen" Yup we're doomed.

Don't count on any government. Live as independent and self sufficient as you can.

For three decades I have read and studied the potential risks and damage from a “hit” by a CME or a nuclear explosion causing a large EMP. This is the best, most informative, and level-headed presentation on EMP / fragility of our nation’s power grid that I have ever seen. Kudos! Members of Congress should be required to watch this presentation on a yearly basis.

In a massive blackout people in the city would die of starvation while in rural America I’d just die of boredom.

i lived in a canadian community growing up in the 80/90s that regularly lost power several times each winter, for hours usually, but often as much as a week each winter with a big storm. in the ‘old’ world of that era, phones generally still worked when the power went out, most people had a woodstove to heat their home and at least boil some water, we pulled out boardgames, lit candles and invited the neighbours over. we all had food in the cupboards from out ‘big trips’ to the urban centre two hours away, but the small town grocery store/pharmacy would open up a few hours on a generator, as the shopkeeper knew how to make change.. and still existed before urban box stores ran them out of business. point being, in the last 20 years we’ve lost even these basic capacities in our technologically improved dumbed down societies.

in Tx we had a huge near collapse of our power grid in 2021, our state govt. has known about this for over a decade, the last session of the legislature still hasn't solved the problem, it's incredible

You always get a warning no matter how subtle before hand.

There is no 3 to 5 days of groceries. A run will clean out a store in hours.

That dude made the fatal mistake of assuming the govt works FOR the people, not AGAINST the people and here we are in 2021.

An EMP 4 min in, Solar Flare, ah 8 min Coronal Mass Ejection (big solar flare). Solving problem, shielding, and redundancy. Ability to separate grids.

It's easy to predict catastrophes when you have prior knowledge.

Thank you for sharing this with us. Today I read about the possibility of us having a x flare as soon as a week from now. We are all going to suffer a slow death if it happens in any way. Besides not having food or transportation, we wouldn't survive the oppressive heat or cold in our homes. It is truly unimaginable.

I had a dream 4 days ago that I was seeing the city skyline in the distance and the whole metropolis was without light . Stay safe world

Jack Phillips never went to sleep that night, the night before the collision he stayed up all night trying to fix the Marconi device even though the rules said he should have waited until New York. Can you imagine what would have happened if it hadn't been working when the Titanic hit? The lifeboats would have been left adrift and only would have been found by the Oceanic 29 days later most likely with zero survivors. The Marconi operators took shifts so Phillips probably had a couple of hours of sleep that day. Now he had to take care of the hundreds of messages that had piled up over the last few hours from passengers who wanted to send messages to their loved ones. The other ship which intercepted him that this man was talking about started transmitting their message while Phillips was transmitting his message. Now you have to imagine that the place he was transmitting to was 600 miles away and the ship that was transmitting to him was less than 50 miles away (Some even say 5 miles but that is still an ongoing argument whether it was the mount temple or not) So now the Sleep deprived Phillips who was catching up on all the messages he hadn't sent during the 12 hours while the machine was broken had this other operator interrupting his transmission. Phillips replied with "Shut up old man! I am working Cape Race!" When the wireless operator on the Californian heard this, he shut down for the night. Another piece of false information is that Philips did not get one minute of sleep until he died that night, he was still transmitting messages when the ship hit the iceberg, when the captain came in and told him to send distress calls to nearby ships, he did. Then when the Captain came in and relieved him from his post, he still continued transmitting distress calls, he didn't even put his life vest on. The chief wireless operator, Harold Bride had to put it on for him, they stayed in the wireless room (which was at the top of the ship) until water was flooding it, roughly 3 minutes before the ship disappeared beneath the water surface. Harold Survived but Phillips died heroically, both of them saved each and every soul onboard. Harold later named one of his sons Jack in honor of him. Please do your research especially if you are presenting In front of an audience such as the one at TED x Talks.

The given stories are perfect examples of powerful people or groups silencing the ones who were warning others, because they had interest about disasters happening. The problem aren't the non listening warnings, the problem is who will get benefit with disasters.

Skilled workers in all network utilities, internet, gas, electric and water are so undervalued and poorly paid. It’s easy to talk for a good living. Society and the people in charge really need to support the vital engineers and scientists who build and maintain these critical networks, human existence relies on it.

The government has one goal divide and conquer. The government wants us to live in fear and division amongst one another. We must base everything on love and forgiveness.

Just saw TV show in how post" Maria" Puerto Rico is rebuilding electric infrastructure in non grid but decentralized renewables.

If you lived in Zimbabwe you would have learned to get your power from the sun so we are ahead of the curve. Not that we have it all together but have learned to live without so many things the Western world feels are necessary every day life.

This makes me think of Biden saying that we’re in for “a dark winter”. Then he says we must “Build Back Better”. Am I the only one hearing this warning?!

He is so right, as humans we are reactive, not proactive. Its a good start to have knowledge, but it doesn't end there bc its not sufficient, it takes the energy to get up and do something about it too.

Anyone else pay attention to how Biden said in the debate last night that we are about to have a "dark winter". Some may say that he did not mean this literally but trust these are the little things that are said that we ignore but he meant exactly what he said. Pay attention folks.

I am a senior operator at one of the nation’s largest power plants. He is 100% correct. Our race to achieve The unobtainable, Net Zero by 2050 will lead to mass blackouts this summer

I’m glad for everything I’ve learned from my Amish neighbors. I can feed myself and many of my neighbors from my barn long enough to bring a newly planted crop to harvest. And I have a great collection of mantle lamps, candle making supplies, and a well in the back yard if needed. Nothing beats knowing how to do things, real things. Without electricity. Helps to have a couple acres of trees. But in the end, knowledge is power as it always has been.

A wise man sees difficulty ahead and prepares for it, a SIMPLETON GOES BLINDLY ON AND SUFFERS THE CONSEQUENCES. A ounce of prevention!

The grid needs to be protected. Without it, our way of life is over.

Problem (they create a problem) + Reaction (the public gives a fear based reaction) = Solution (an outcome that would not have been achievable were it not for the Problem that they themselves created by design). Thesis + Antithesis = Synthesis.

Don’t live in fear just know that it was designed way before you were even born

Blackout sounds pretty much like a perfect scenario for a purge to happen.

Samual has a very good point, we don’t do anything about anything until after the event. We don’t help ourselves and always wish that we had once it’s happened, a very good speech I listened to every word he said, and it all made sense.

TEXAS February 2021: Wierdest winter storm & power blackouts ever!

Its not just electricity. It's also gas, food, petrol. Factory products. Everything is so centralized and dependent now that it has all become extremely vulnerable. We are just waiting for it to happen!

The drying up of the Colorado River is going to create a powergrid crisis which nobody seems to consider. If all buildings in the southwest were mandated to have solar panels & powerplants were built to serve the communities they are located next too,the coming energy crisis would not be so debilitating.

I grew up poor. It taught me so many valuable lessons. Throughout life I’ve been tempted with money, with possession, with advancements in technology. But a seed was planted. I already knew I could be happy and content with the nature around me that was entirely free. The same nature that they are currently pillaging for the ‘advancement’ of our world. Before I retired, I was in a position that let me know that what he said is the absolute truth. He didn't mention that many Powerhouses are remotely controlled, often by one person who is monitoring two or more facilities. Most Powerhouse transformer switchyards are vulnerable to attack by any number of means. To use his analogy, the iceberg isn't over the horizon, it's within the fog bank we're about to enter. We need to heed this warning before it is too late.

Interesting how he connected alien invasion, a plague/pandemic, AND electrical outages all in one.

I could swear this guy must have taken my intro to alternative energy class, because I discuss pretty much every point he touched on in the first 10 minutes or so.

Since this video, we've experienced a pandemic and a cyber attack. Will we ever listen?

I grew up in a military and rural family. Every time I visit a large urban center (hive), I am still amazed that many people there don't know there is a world outside of the streets, don't know where there food comes from, can't find fresh water except from a tap or bottle, and can barely hold a conversation with a live person. I thank GOD I know how to survive without electricity... I also wonder why we should care if the artificial urban cesspools lost power and died off? This might actually be a good thing for the rest of humanity. Noah had the flood to cleanse the world, perhaps we need this.

It's nice that you brought this up. In my opinion too much money is directed toward projects in unhabitable spaces (like over 10 millions in Antarctica, and more money in space) instead of thinking about improving our world here where we all live right now, and also being prepared for an upcoming catastrophe. The expenses are often mindblowing and questionned by many. Instead it seems like contributing to more social catastrophes as well as gaining control and power is more important than caring in building a truly better world for all.

I work in tech for 30 years....I’ve been talking about CMEs for decades, They all say “stop being so dark”. I say, soon enough you’ll be living in the dark.
