A four day kayaking adventure to work

Following two rivers, one drain, one sea and one creek, it turns out that paddling to work, which ends up being mostly a drag, over four full days, is bloody hard work.
After a stripped back walk to work (The Commute: walking 90km to work), I decided to continue experimenting between the lands and seas of home and work. This time by paddling. At least, that was the plan; following two rivers, a canal, the sea, and a creek- all the way to my desk. What usually takes 75 minutes by car took four full days of mostly dragging, burning over 18,000 calories. Sleeping by the river, under a train line and next to a boat ramp, the final drag through the suburbs was a full watershed transect, which is an intimate view into all the goods and bads of humanity- including myself. What was another commuting stunt turned out to be the hardest, most insightful four days of travel I’ve ever done.

I love the concept of "finding" adventures. Most people want to "go" on adventures, like finding a new place or area to explore. But when you say "finding adventures", its different. Finding adventures in places you have already explored and know about. I often go back to the forests and streams I would play in as a kid, and its always a unique experience when I go back because I am gaining new perspectives. Love the way you tell your stories.

I didn't do something this extreme, but just started biking to work over the last 2 months. It's made the experience of going to work a lot more enjoyable. I'm no longer on autopilot during my commute. I start to notice many small things in the neighborhood that I usually miss. By the time I get to work, I'm more awake, alert, and in a better mood. The commute home is where it starts to get fun. I'm off in the early afternoon and the routes home are endless. Do I go for a nice cruise along the ocean? Make a huge climb up the mountain take some dirt/gravel trails? Ride along the reservoir? Typing this got me thinking of a video for you. You have done car, walk, and now kayak to work, why not bike? Now the time to get to work isn't going to be anywhere near as long as those last two, but what if you showed you can change your commute through nice detours or sights you want to see. Show that your commute doesn't always have to be on paved roads or the shortest routes.

I did something like this once when I was a kid. My dad took me and my brother out, and we canoed from a small river out into the bay. We had to go under bridges and through storm drains could barely fit through. It was a lot of fun. One really memorable part was a storm drain we all had to lay down in the canoe to pass through. I remember being inches away from the top of the storm drain, and it was covered in spider webs too.

When I was 9-10 my aunt and uncle build a small raft with me. We went down the river that flows along our village. A couple years later I went fishing there with my neighbour (ca.50yo). He wanted to show me where the river runs deep and where the fishes stay and hunt. I could tell he was wrong and showed him a couple of really deep parts that I discovered with my aunt and uncle. I could tell him where the river had formed hidden caves under the embankment and how the ground was shaped like. Traveling down the river once had shown me much more about it than just walking along it for 30years. Great video, greetings from germany.

No sponsors no prize money and very few even knew what I was doing.... I knew...and I cared whether or not I completed my challenge. So many things I learned about myself...my "friends" and associates and my community. The body aches and pains the sights and sounds and wildlife encounters are memories I will have forever. Aside from the big estuarine areas within a few km of the coast (all the major cities are situated along the largest rivers by the coast), there's not really much of the continent that is navigable by water. Even a tiny kayak has to be portaged much of the way until you get near the ocean. Makes you appreciate just how important water conservation is down under

I think we forget about those childhood imaginations when we get older. When we become adults we forget what we wanted from our life when we were a child. All the things we wanted to do. I have turned 50 recently and I am so glad that I have done the things I have. I have always said I want to do that, and then I do it. A lot of people will never leave their home shire let alone their state or country. I am so pleased I have found your channel to remind me of those childhood ideals. The ones that say I want to do that one day. I'm going to apply for a job as a train driver now. It's the only thing I have never achieved from my childhood dream. I keep creating new dreams though and I achieve them. I am so pleased I found your channel (by accident mind you) Thank you. Paul

Beau you were born a 150 years to late...canoe to work,no pollution in the creeks and streams, clean air, and the odd arrow from some Indian when you were passing past his territory...video made me cry....heart wrenching in a good way..........we have come so far, and maybe its not a good thing.

273 people disliked this. how? For me, this and the walk to work video has redefined my perception of adventure. I’m 41, been fortunate enough to get to all 7 continents and love discovery. this has made me wonder about my local area so much more. As a teacher, I’m thinking - walk to work as some sort of adventure week etc try to create some sort of inspiration in the kids I teach. Its not adventure if its easy…

From Drouin, I like to think it is my river too. I love spending time by it, though there be few spots where non-landowners can access it. It rages with rains, and trickles with drought. It is the local adolescent's beach and my fishing mate's escape. There are few people looking out for its health though ... thanks Mr Miles (I can't call you uncle, I am old enough to be your grandfather, but I hold a candle of respect to you young fella). 13.48 .... oh, and so many bloody willows, I had no idea there would be so many ! Later ... I love the view from above of the old river path when you get down towards the bay, where the buggers straightened out the river meandering through the old swamp-land to make it a straight drain draining the land as quickly as possible to make room for friggen' cows.

The few people I know that, like Beau here, are drawn to long distance adventure all seem to have one thing in common. That irrepressibly positive mindset when facing their own chosen sufferings. I honestly find that quite enviable. Inspiring even. Sort of gives you some perspective. Like, why not go run 10k in the rain - it's not like I'm going kayaking in muddy, overgrown river in the frost for 4 days. Doesn't seem so outrageous in comparison now
