Tbh, all the people that make fun of Australia because of the wild life is wrong. I’m Australian and not everything wants to kill you. No animal wants to kill you unless you annoy you. You mess with an animal it attacks you simple. Yes, there are more stuff that can kill you but remember watch out in Australia and you’ll be fine. The Emu war, nobody technically won. We technically lost no soldiers except the ones that actually had crashed and so on. Australia has been called many things. Also, I still respect. And yes, everything WANTS to kill you, But really it can’t or won’t if you don’t provoke it. Australians love nature. But it hates us. ;)

One time when I took a beginner level Japanese language course, the professor (who's a Japanese lady) told us a story about an experience she had when she was in college. One of her classes had Chinese and Korean students in it and she felt uncomfortable NOT because of prejudice but because she was a Japanese person in a room full of Chinese and Korean students. This was also a Japanese history course which made the atmosphere all the more distressing. She herself knew about the Rape of Nanking and "comfort women" beforehand. My professor simply got up, went to the front of the class, and apologized for what Japan did. Now, this was upsetting because she felt it was her duty to apologize for something she had nothing to do with. She wasn't even born yet at the time it all happened. The actions of the Japanese military and the approval of it from people who thought it justified had made it that the following generations would feel compelled to take responsibility in order to work with others, especially when those they want to work with are people no one can blame for feeling apprehensive.

To this day it's still extremely controversial to discuss Nanking in Japan. If I remember correctly in 1995 the Japanese Prime Minister wrote a scroll that expressed remorse for Nanking, but the Senate/House of Deputies tried to force a motion to change the wording to make it vage enough so that it could be interpreted as simply a deep reflection of Japanese military decisions during the war, instead of an outright apology for the war crimes that Japan committed during the war but especially during the Rape of Nanking

A fun fact, the Germans rarely used the term "Blitzkrieg". It was just the modern interpretation of the Prussian doctrine of a quick war. They could not sustain a long, attritional war so their wars were always in a mindset of, "Mobilize, fight and win quickly, demobilize." This is also the mindset of the OKW in WW2 as if the war turns out longer than expected, they do not have the men nor material to continue a prolonged fight with the Western Powers with their access to many, many resources such as rubber, oil and rare alloys.

It's interesting to hear that perspective on Chamberlain, he is certainly judged by history through the perspective of hindsight... As a Brit I would point out that Chamberlain's failures continue to have an impact on Prime Ministers of the UK to this day... Thatcher famously said on more than one occasion "I'm not in the buisness of appeasement" and followed that mantra throughout much of her administration (particularly the Falklands). Tony Blair certainly played on those 'anti-appeasement' ideals during the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan (and destroyed his reputation in the process)… Theresa May had been accused many times by her enemies of being an 'appeaser' during Brexit negotiations... For a British PM, being called an appeaser is the ultimate insult.

I mean he wanted to overthrow the monarchy because he genuinely believed that he was the only one who could lead his nation back to greatness. Once he held that position he likely realised that he was always taking orders from someone. So he tried to establish power so that he could make his own destiny for his people without being held back by other powers. Thus expanding his civil conflict out into the world at large. It’s a genuinely relatable experience for many an angst fueled teen. But that does not excuse the lengths he went to keep and expand his power.

About Maginot Line, the only plan to extend it was with belgium line, but they didn't build it.

Belgium didn't want to feel like it was all cut off France. If the Maginot line was built it would have a wall on their backs. I can understand why they didn't want to build a wall

Few inaccuracies in both the video and the commentary; reason is that most of older history book especially those used in schools are outdated. Maginot line did extend to the coast; northern part was a combination of smaller fortifications and a movable line in the form of high concentration of non-mechanized troops and big heavy modern tank units meant to move into Belgium or south depending where the invasion will occur. Areas around the Ardenne where fortified as part of the Maginot Line; problem is the very high tech French fortresses was supposed to be used together with conventional army units to be stoppable force and not act as single solution defense force as popular believed. Building was behind schedule but there were still lots of heavy fortresses that took Germans weeks to neutralise a single fortress complex; the only one to fall during the Battle of France. Also they together with supporting troops were suppose to delay any attack for 30 days and not be impregnable as popularly believed. So when the main units were drawn into Belgium and the weaker units made up largely of senior part time reserves that was not well trained was left north of Sedan to stop the fully mechanized German units (troops and tanks together moving fast as a unit) could push through after the Luftwaffe bomb the crap out of them since Allies air forces where all deployed to Belgium. Even together with all against them the French units held of the German Panzer 1 and 2 divisions for couple of days causing heavy losses against for Panzer 1. Also French did advance technologically wise, problem was military doctrine was still stuck in WW1 mode so infantry was not mechanised and heavy tank units had non infantry and slow. But where they faced the Germans head on they were the superior force. The Manstein plan could have easily stopped by the French on various occasions; by diverting air forces to Sedan or by moving in reinforcements when the Germans were held back at the Muze or by moving the larger units from the south up north instead keeping them stationed to protect the roads south. Basically the fall of France can be blamed on the poor French command structure, and lack of central command and specifically on General Huntzinger who made poor decision on poor decision and lied about the situation at Sedan to not make himself look bad.

I was writing a similar comment yesterday. Fortunately I will not have to. But as a little tag for those who would blame the fall of France on the intransitance (a real word?) of the Belgians is that every cynical fear of the Belgians was basically correct: 1. The Belgians did not expect the Allies to defend Belgium wholesale. The Allies, for their part, planned to forfeit about half of Belgium (including all of Liege and Antwerp) so they could mount a stalemate hold within Belgium. 2 .The Belgians expected the Allies to allow the Belgian military arms to sacrifice themselves to buy the Allies time. The Allies did and planned to do just this. 3. Inviting the Allies in would invite the Axis in and vice versa. Any way you slice it, Belgium would be effectively fully occupied. TLDR: The entire grand strategy of the defense of France was "Lets try our best to have the war entirely in Belgium at the expense of the Belgians." The Belgians expected this, and were therefore not exactly champing at the bit to volunteer to be acceptable losses.
