Dale Earnhardt Jr. and co-host Mike Davis sit down with NASCAR driver Austin Dillon and Dr. Eric Warren, Director of NASCAR Programs for Chevrolet, for a candid discussion about the NASCAR Next Gen car that is set to launch in 2022.
This new racecar marks the beginning of a new era in NASCAR. With the new chassis comes a pile of questions, uncertainty, fear, and doubt. Earnhardt and Davis waste no time addressing the big topics of concern about the newly designed chassis. Warren, who spearheaded much of Chevrolet's involvement in the development of the Next Gen car, brings us inside the decisions and the intricate details from development to production of this state-of-the-art machine. Dillon, well, he's been behind the wheel of the Next Gen in test sessions. He brings a unique perspective from the driver's seat of the new-age stock car.
Speaking of stock... this thing sure looks stock! Chevrolet and Richard Childress Racing brought one of the sleek Next Gen cars to the Studio so the gang could see it first hand. Warren and Earnhardt discuss the importance of the design and the street look of this Camaro racer.
The testing of the Next Gen car hasn't been 100-percent smooth. A crash by William Byron early in testing helped the design team learn about the behavior of the new design. What happened during the wreck and how did the car react to the heavy impact? Is the racecar too rigid? Warren addresses the rumor mill surrounding the Talladega crash test and talks about the changes in development that are designed to lessen the impact on the driver.
Dale Jr. tested the NASCAR Next Gen car at North Carolina's Bowman Gray Stadium. He shares his experience with Dillon and the two bring their thoughts from the cockpit to the table. Is the steering lock an issue? What is it like to drive with a sequential shifter? What about the limited split differential? And are their legitimate concerns of extreme cockpit temperatures, that at one test session reached a sweltering 170 degrees, an issue that is being resolved? Dillon also gives Dale Jr. first-hand accounts of how the Next Gen car will perform in the draft at the Superspeedways.

Thank you, Dale, for asking that question about drivers potentially damaging rear diffusers on purpose, in order to upset the balance of a fellow competitors car. To me, that would be low-hanging fruit to rough up a driver running at Martinsville, Dover, and any other tracks where cars run nose to tail a lot of the time. I am not a fan of the sheer number of changes coming with this Next Gen car, NASCAR used to wisely be slower to change things in cars, in attempt to keep NASCAR cars unique from other auto racing series. The massive number of changes: rear diffusers, single-lug wheels, sequential transmission, no more track bars, etc., are just too many changes to the NASCAR unique car platform. The Next Gen car is almost an IMSA Corvette (before Chevrolet removed what made a Corvette a Corvette with the most recent mid-engine design). At what point do you say, someone is just okaying all of these changes, just so they can put their own stamp of leadership on the series? As a 20-year plus dedicated (watching every single race) fan of NASCAR, I don't like how wholesale the changes have been rolling in lately. Clearly, the rise of IndyCar and IMSA racing has happened for them without the "gimmick" of PLAYOFFS, Stages, and wholesale changes to race schedule dates and racetracks. I'm frustrated just waiting for the next string of Spaghetti NASCAR will fling at the wall next!
@jackstraw8786
@jackstraw8786 2 роки тому
I wonder what the rear diffuser is made of, maybe it would destroy the fron bumper. I do agree about the amount of changes, ease it in. I almost have no faith in Nascar recovering especially after the CoT, the chase, stage racing, double lines, running to the line after a wreck.....short tracks and new cars aren't gonna fix anything. They are a lot like the NHRA which is dying due to the fact the cars are all the same and rule changes. No innovation just a scramble to survive. I say bring it back to the 60s and 70s when the little man can afford to race

I've said it elsewhere, but I really do think the cars only having 550hp is a major image problem for the sport. There are a LOT of production street cars now that make considerably more power than that,not to mention that many car enthusiasts (who overlap as motorsports fans) have daily drivers that make a LOT more power than 550. 604 crates make 400hp race saver 305 sprint car motors make 500 hp and if you watch them race in person if your not aware of the motors the cars are running it’s very hard to tell the difference , tires , suspension, aero etc. have a came a long way and has proven sometimes more power is not the solution , one thing I’ve learned is lower hp cars are harder to drive fast consistent because you don’t have the extra power to muscle a car around to do certain things were a lower hp car has to be finessed and keep momentum
@ethanmcclain7570
@ethanmcclain7570 2 роки тому
@@brandon42054 Sprint cars and cars running 604 crate motors are running on dirt tracks that are similar in length to short tracks that Nascar runs high horsepower on. The 550 package that Nascar runs sucks for a multitude of reasons, one of them being that the cars are so dependent on aero now, but 550 hp doesn't allow for cars to muscle through bad air, so passing the leaders is near impossible.

It showed me how much nascar has failed to keep races worth watching and why they have lost 75% or more of their viewers. The main thing I noticed was the personality's of the driver's and how much it's changed from real men to little silver spooned boys with no personality's. Jimmy Johnson was one of the worst things to ever happen to nascar, people didn't like him, and the next thing you see is 40 Jimmy Johnson's out there and NO Dale Earnhardt SR's or Darrel Waltrip's left. I agree with the premise of your comment but I actually liked JJ in the end. The key is in the end. The Dale Sr we all know and love was older and more mature when he became the face of NASCAR. Its the same thing now with the Busch brothers. I still hate Kyle, but Kurt is starting to come around to where I actually dont mind him at all, even in broadcast. But still totally agree as a whole NASCAR has made horrible decisions and alienated the fans it had to try and gain more from other sources, which has mostly failed. And we do seem to be in a rut where most of the current drivers are a bunch of young kids with no respect and a lot of learning and growing up to be had. Probably because theyve made the sport so damn expensive, both to watch and to participate in.

I wonder if with the single lug nuts they will have faster pit stops because they still have to fuel the car and they are usually still doing that when they pit after a long run and are almost out of gas. So if they finish the tires changes faster will they still have to wait on certain stops like I said when they need to fill the tank up when it's almost empty. On short runs I'm sure it won't be an issue, but on long runs son cars my not get filled up all the way if they try to get out a little quicker and if they have a long run to the end we may see more cars run out of fuel.

Spec cars make winning races more expensive, because getting around the rules into the winners circle is harder. The teams with resources will figure it out and the other teams will be left behind. @@jarrod1766 My experience would suggest otherwise. For the teams willing to run mid-pack, there may be some cost savings. For the teams that want to be out front, they have a budget, and they are going to use it. They will not settle for "luck of the draw" The whole reason Indy Car fell apart was because of USAC controlling the waste gates for the Indy 500.
