What did Europe look like on the verge of World War I? This video redraws the map of Europe from 2014 to 1914 while explaining the differences.
ERRATA
• Vatican City was established in 1929 and should not appear on the final 1914 map.
• The central parts of the 1914 German border with Russia are slightly too advanced.
• Germany in 1914 should also include a very small part of present-day eastern Czechia (the so-called 'Hultschiner Ländchen').
• Spanish Morocco is shown as slighly too large.
• The Dutch province of Flevoland didn't yet exist in 1914, as it was still under water.
• The Franco-Italian border is very slightly off, as Italy in 1914 should include some minor areas of France.

Well, Yeah but to Poland, those were simply rebels trying to deflect from the Commonwealth, even further from the direct part of the Polish Crown. It is right that Commonwealth didn't really look at the Ukrainians as a nation, but I wouldn't call protecting Your (because at the time those were Polish) borders a partition. This is one of the biggest problems in Polish-Ukrainian relations alongside with the characters of Ukrainian heroes such as Khmelnitsky, Bandera, that for polish are traitors and murderers and polish heroes like Yarema Vyshnevetsky who is a traitor and genocide-maker for Ukraine. Only at the very end of Polish and Lithuanian independence, there were ideas of creating the Commonwealth of three nations that would include Ukraine as a separate state on the same rights as Poland and Lithuania. An idea that came to minds of our dumb, rotten nobility and administrators far too late.
@Agron_ATA
@Agron_ATA 5 років тому
Nontheless You cannot really say that Polish took part in getting rid of the country that was literally a rebel state deflected from Poland.
@Agron_ATA
@Agron_ATA 5 років тому
Another ironic thing is the fact that Khmelnitsky was a Catholic Pole that became a traitor seeking revenge on Polish government and Ukrainian hero, while his main enemy, Vyshnevetsky was an Orthodox Ruthenian, who changed religion and begun slaughtering his own kin, which during the rebellion was thought to be great and became a Polish hero (His son was even a king!). I understand Your point though and feel terrible for the fact that my countrymen still tend to say that Ukraine is only "fake country" with no history, while this was one of the reasons why the Commonwealth - which same people say was so great and all-powerful - has fallen.

The Netherlands had a border change, after ww2 they got a hill, Wylerberg, about 1 square kilometer. It was mostly strategic, because if "the Nethelands" controlled that, they could scout abnormous distanses. The Netherlands also temporarily, such did Belgium, many german bordertowns, but they were later given back (except Wylerberg).
@sanderskovly7641
@sanderskovly7641 5 років тому
Iran also had some redrawings of borders, with Russia and UK. But I don't know if some of these happened after 1914. But Iran did change it's borders in the Iraqi-Iranian war (first gulf war), but only temporalily. The border was set back after a shorter time. Iran also holds some islands in the persian Gulf, which a couple of minor states in UAE say belongs to them. Also, Bahrain was, sorta, part of Iran, but I can't remember if the british freed them from Iran or Qatar from UK in 1916. But they gt freed around the same time.

Terrorist are just using different sorts of shahada flags. But that doesn't make the shahada flag a terrorist flag in itself. It is just the Muslim testimony of faith written on it. Saudi Arabia has it, Afghanistan used to have it. Other kingdoms used to have some kind all over history. It's basically a theocratic Muslim flag.

If you really think about this, the countries that gained land in this video are the ones you should be sad about, because it's reverse, so they actually lost them, while the ones that lost land actually gained those lands.

You forgot that a very tiny strip of Thrace located in modern-day Northeastern-most Greece and a super minuscule bit of Southern Bulgaria somewhat north of it actually belonged to the Ottomans during that time (also prior to the Second Balkan War), not Bulgaria. It can be very hard to notice in WW1 maps (took me a while too before) but yes, that’s a little-known fact so it’s understandable if someone people don’t notice that.

History has a lot of these "the fuck is this map" moments - Medieval Europe was especially messy. Major weird ones : England used to own chunks of modern days Frances coast. Muscovy (Russia before it became Russia) was heckin' TINY for ages then kinda exploded in all directions in the space of a few decades until they became the monsters you see here. Spain was in cut in two, and the east side of it (known as Aragon) owned most of Southern Italy... sorta. And don't even get me started on the fucking holy Roman Empire. Oh and like 'Turkey' (the Ottoman Empire) was just massive for the longest time, as was the ex-Byzatium Empire, which was still around 600 years ago. Yeah - what was basically the Roman empire was still around 600 years ago, KINDA WIERD. Also, there was like dozens of entire country's most people have never heard of that existed. Honestly for anyone intrested in this kind of thing - watch a timelapse of Europe from 0AD to today and it's pretty mind-blowing, it's increadible how long it takes until anything is even remotely reccognisable.

Akın Yaman Altın I'm not sure, but I think its because Bulgaria was actually forced to join the Axis (Germany sent Bulgaria an ultimatum: join us or we invade). The church in Bulgaria managed to actually save the Jews and stop them being taken to Germany, I think this is one of the greatest acts of WW2.
