While you can now buy a RaspberryPi Zero or ZeroW with Header pins pre-soldered, there are still many boards available without them. shop.pimoroni.com/products/ra...
Those headerless boards need not gather dust, as you can quickly add headers to them. Even if your solder skills are a bad as mine.
In this video, I show you how Hammer Header Pins work and how fit them to your RaspBerry Pi ZeroW.
You can buy the Hammer Header kit here
shop.pimoroni.com/products/gp...
if you've already got a RaspberryPi Zero without header that you need to get busy with.
Alternatively, checkout the pre-soldered RaspberryPi ZeroW option when you buy your own here shop.pimoroni.com/products/ra...

this is genius, should just use this type of header pin for EVERYTHING, no soldering needed forever.

I can’t tell you how much of a lifesaver this is! I’m definitely getting this soon!

I needed to solder a GPIO header to a bananapi m4 zero for a project, but I'm possibly the worst solderer (Is that even a word?) on earth. This is really helpful. Great video!

Hi ,i wish i seen your video as i arsed mine up.I ended up bending the pins and broke the thin perspex where the long rectangle is.It was a nightmare to sort the pins but once sorted ,i used the female gpio header on to the male header and repeated the process. This rescued an almost disastrous situation. The use of a adjustable clamp is a excellent idea which i will use in future unless i am lucky to purchase RPI with gpio headers soldered on. Thank you for sharing the video and the excellent tip (use of clamp)

Use of clamps is a good tip.

I used this kit on other PCBs, but with the female connectors instead of the perspex bar applying the pressure from the top, and the whole lot squeezed in a small vice to apply pressure slowly and evenly. (Obviously no bolts in my case and remove the female connectors once done.) Not tested it yet but it seems to have worked a treat. Thanks for the creative 'spark'. I would have hated to have soldered or hammered this lot.

Thanks. You’re right, the female part of the kit is great on the extension boards. I used them on my Patreon display with a Pimoroni Ultra White LED display.

PS On about my 6th one, I found the female connectors pulled the male connectors out when I tried to remove them. However, if the vice jaws are smooth, you can do away with the female connector strip / perspex top bar altogether: just use the slotted perspex piece underneath.

Neat! I wish they had distribution within the US. The shipping from the UK is more than the kit. :(

Ooh, that's nice. Thanks for sharing, I hadn't seen that style of header board before.

Andy Pugh Thanks! Even though you can buy these pre-soldered now, I still think there’s room for this kit. Plus it also gives me a get out for my poor soldering skills.

I don't solder often enough to be good at it, although I blame my rubbish soldering irons.

What do the headers do for the computer. Like is it required to run the computer or is it to help out with performance. I'm new to making computers and this would help out alot.
@Tinkerneering

Headers allow you to attach wires to the RaspberryPi, allowing it to connect to things you want to talk to. These can be sensors for input or motors for output. You can run a RaspberryPi without them though.

What's the advantage of the hammerhead method over buying the version of the zero with the header pins already soldered in? And then either way, does adding a hat still require soldering?
@Tinkerneering
@Tinkerneering 4 роки тому
This video was planned before RaspberryPi started selling Zeros with the headers already soldered in. The hammer headers come in male and female versions though. So you can take a pHat and make that work without soldering in exactly the same way.

Seems odd that they didn't include screws that were long enough that you could use them to tighten down the crossbar and pop the pins in.

I know what you mean but I think it needs pressure in the middle as well as the ends. Otherwise the plastic will flex.

Can you suggest what clamps to use for this?

I’ve used a couple of different types of clamp when fitting these solderless pins. A vice works well. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01L27B094

Why the need for the jig kit at all? If you just carefully place the header pin assembly and Pi Zero in a vice with everything carefully aligined you can just wind on uniform pressure that compresses the pins correctly in finely controlled increments.
@Tinkerneering
@Tinkerneering 4 роки тому
I'm glad you asked that. Take a look at another of my Raspberry Pi videos ukposts.info/have/v-deo/gp6HbH96p6OfsoE.html. I use a small table top vice and tighten the jaws until i hear the ping of the pins popping into place. The jig came with the headers and is useful for both the Pi and any Phats that use want to use with it. It also stops the electronics coming in contact with the vice.

But i still have to buy something extra. The whole idea is to use whatever I have here already because I can't afford solder, a soldering iron, or really anything extra. I guess I can wrap wires around each of the holes and hook that up to a breadboard somehow.

I see what you mean. This is project is more about helping people who can’t solder than people who can’t afford to solder.
