I just got a QooCam EGO even though I already have an iPhone 15 Pro Max. Not for the video though: for photos! The QooCam EGO can take DNG photos which I can process in Lightroom with pretty good results, and the 65mm IPD makes a much better 3D effect. Plus the two "eyes" are identical. In still photos, the lesser "left eye" of the iPhone is super noticeable (in a bad way).

Thanks for the comparison! One downside to the Ego is the stabilization. You can stabilize the footage in-camera, but this has to be done after recording.

Good point! For Spatial Video - even tho iPhone has good stabilization - I would advice not move the camera at all to not make people motion sick in AVP.

We need a real 3D camera like the JVC ones with auto convergence, auto focus, zoom, LCD display of 3D, Left, Right or Left +Right (for convergence) and a warning for when the parallax is too much, except in 8K instead of 1080p.

JVC has auto convergence?! I only use the Panasonic one. Is it JVC still around btw? I hope so too but all big camera makers are out of the game of 3D except Canon - which will something like this coming very soon.

FYI, though you do require a MAC or iPad Pro 12.9" (with Spatially program) with a M series processor for conversion to Spatial for videos, you can use any MAC (Including Intel based) that runs the latest MacOS to convert Photos from the EGO to Spatial HEIC files that can be viewed on the Apple Vision Pro and most likely the Quest 2/3 with latest firmware update.

Thank you for such a great video! It’s highly informative. I have an iPhone 15 Pro and noticed that I need to keep it horizontally aligned while filming spatial videos. Does EGO have a similar requirement? I’m looking for something that’s easy to use while out on hikes.

Yes it does. I will use a cellphone gimbal which will work on both EGO or iPhone 15 Pro max. I will make more rigging related setup for Spatial Video very soon including outdoor adventure like hiking - which I love as well.

Thanks for such a detailed breakdown! Which camera produces the best “3D” quality in your opinion? I have heard that because the iPhone 15 Pro lenses are not as far apart as dedicated 3D cameras like the EGO, the 3D effect is weaker?

Qoocam EGO is more STANDARD in 65mm. iPhone 15 Pro max actually is 63mm as computing vision put 2 eye apart again. So it is different. I can't say which one is better. It depend on your IPD

I wish they do as well. I will doubt iPhone 16 will have 4K spatial video - I think it won't be higher than AVP 2K. But for sure the 2 lens will match better tho.

can you do a step by step on the batch process to covert the videos to spatial through the update? that would help a lot

Sure. First you need to enable the new software for secrity reason on Mac system. You need to do it on both the launch file and the spatial video and spatial photo file. Then just double click the launch file with all your video and photo in the folder. It will convert everything in the output folder. Pretty straight forward.

I’d be interested to see how the comparison would be of two DJI Osmo Action 4 custom mounted at human IPD. I know it’s not easy for the average consumer to synchronize the two video feeds but maybe DJI or their competitors would watch. 😉

Well, the biggest problem is syncing as none of this action camera is global shutter with genlock sync - so for 1 min capture yes, but then it start to drift and impossible to sync.

The question I have is not a comparison of "quality" of video between iPhone 15 pro max and this camera but of the 3D difference. I did video in spatial on my iPhone and I did one on my Vision Pro and the 3D level was a big difference as the iPhone video barely looked 3D where as the AVP video was much more of a 3D look. I would assume the EGO camera would do a better job at the 3D than my iPhone 15 pro max. What do you think?

Yes! The reason is IPD - you might have larger IPD than average. So iPhone has small IPD. Vision Pro has 63mm IPD which is average. This has 65mm IPD - so the 3D might be a bit too much. But if you go for more depth - this is the camera to go.

Hi Hugh, could you help me understand, what's the difference between spatial video and regular stereoscopic video? You mentioned in your early video that AVP's video has more parallax, right? I was under the impression that QooCam is a simple stereoscopic camera that was released a couple of years ago, so how come it can shoot the latest format (not the codec) now? Thanks again.

So Spatial Video is based on 3D video. Apple Vision Pro player is the magic here, it take extra metadate and do some fancy thing to it and make it look "different" inside AVP. You will need to see it inside AVP to see the different. It is MORE THAN 3D - but it is not 6DoF. It does has head tracking parallax

Is spatial camera/Space Camera the only two apps that can shoot spatial video? I am looking for an app like Blackmagic cam that can customize the shutter,iso, aperture, and shoot spatial video. Can you help me?

Yes right now only Spatial Camera. Blackmagic does not investing in making a Spatial Camera app yet. But I will probably make a tutorial if some good app from reputable developers are out on AVP.

When you plug in the Kando do you drag the files from the camera directly on the iMac to the converter software,im really considering buying this but i need to know more in depth how to convert the video,you only mentioned it for a second in this video and I’ve been trying to convert any pics on my Mac using the software but it wont work saying I don’t have permission even though i granted my Mac to run it

"The file “run.command” could not be executed because you do not have appropriate access privileges". this error keeps popping up,even after I gave permission. I'm using a apple silicon Mac btw

You need to go into Privacy settings on your Mac. Every time you run the command it will show up a permissions thing under privacy security settings. You need to allow that (with password) 3 times for the Run.commmand / Spatial Video and Spatial photo command. They all need to run. I hope this help.

2 questions: Can i use Ipad that has M1 chip to covert or does it have to be a mac? Do these converted spatial videos from EGO also work on Quest 3?

1. Not now. It has to be a Mac computer. 2. Spatial Video is standard format and it will work on Quest 3 with v62 - v63 firmware update. You do need an iPhone at least to upload to Meta. I think you know that already - that is a limitation of Meta not Kandao.

The clips can be converted using the Spatialify app on M1 iPad. Also this App runs on Mx MacBooks

Yes. first time to use EGO software, you need to go into Privacy settings on your Mac and allow both the launch software and the spatial video and spatial photo to run. So you need to manually tell you mac that 3 files are okay to run then it will run. As it is using your Mac Spatial decoder so it will need to allow permission.

Too bad the Vision Pro isn't able to shoot in 3D at 3840x2160 60p per eye. Would be nice if Kandao made a successor to the EGO with 4K per eye.

The ego can shoot in 3840 x1080 @ 60fps. The quality should be better than the iPhone 15 pro. Do you know what resolution the kando app is converting spatial video to?

It does not change the resolution, but places them on top of each other as prescribed by the HV-HEVC specification.

Well that is BOTH EYE in 3840 x 1080 not per eye. Pre eye is 1920 x 1080 - exact same as iPhone not higher.

Yes absolutely. You don't get this 4K quality but it can still work. It is exact same as this workflow btw: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/enilf4Wvfnuaoqs.htmlsi=8RjAfLLg97iaXN44 - instead of 8K source you get 5.7K EVO source. But same workflow if you want to try it

I had that for a few days and it's unfinished junk. It's cooking batteries, the whole case heat itself to the +40C, most time camera switched off itself repeatedly to protect the battery. The only way to use it is to remove the battery and power it from the power bank. The footage is too compressed and there is no stabilisation. I gave up after a few days, it's too expensive and there is no real support to fix firmware for it. I would pay £100 to use it with gimbal and powerbank.

@uThat's the thing. Fortunately some people used it. I liked that camera, but there is no reason for the issues it's had, at least it should be tethered before they start to sell. How come it takes them like 2 years to try to fix firmware and they still fail, this is why it's so outdated as last year it was old... and the price is still the same. I paid £200 for used and I gave up. I think the worst was that bitrate, I would even rebuy it to check it after the last firmware , but I don't believe they they do anything. They started to sell it on May 17, 2022, and now it's 2024. I guess it's a kind of "android" camera with a system, why there is nobody who would mod it, that's mostly a problem with their thinking, to keep it locked and still fail to deliver (but at least nobody steals their precious "work"). ...and the worst is cex paying £91 in cash if somebody will want to sell it. Imagine somebody who will loose £200, £100 - that's the realistic price for that unsold stock.

@lEveryDay Even though I criticize the EGO, I'm happy the camera exists. There was nothing out there for shooting 3D videos (that isn't VR180) when the Ego arrived. Kandao was ambitious in making the camera with a viewer and the idea of 3Dsocial media sharing. Right now, with the iPhone 15 Pro spatial video and Apple Vision interest, they are so close to getting it really, really useful by removing the annoyances. It's a great viewer-- but I can't load anything else in it without deciphering their naming and format scheme. I would love to play iPhone 15 Pro spatial videos on it. The Ego could just be a great 3D viewer. As for the camera, If they just give us an Auto Exposure lock, I won't have video constantly over and underexposing when something passes in front. That's the main two things I want them to fix.

Yes! Stabilization is the problem as iPhone has better stabilization. But it does has gryo to use gryo flow in post.

I just front get why they made the viewer for the ego have to be used from the top of the device instead of straight out the back.

It is beam spliting the view so you can see it. The image is actually also flipped in capture so you will need their Spatial Video converter to fix the left and right eye flip issue

What do you mean zoom in? The standard IPD is 65mm can not change - so how do you technically shoot close up ?

@u The JVCs have lenses that are closer together and the camera has a zoom lens so you can get a close and tight shot. Thanks for video, always useful. But "SPATIAL" video (stereoscopic, a 1838 invention...) is not really volumetric, has NO parallax and NO geometry variation, And you GET 100% SICK if you move your head. And you always move your head :) Only a real volumetric video such as V-Nova PresenZ can offer a real immersive experience (6DoF) at cinematic grade (no video game graphics). Tell me if you wanna try it.
