A slowdown was expected, it was a matter of how much; in the end it seems like it barely happened. Lots of greats went from putting great numbers still at 33 and retiring at 37, you just never know. He still has to score 100 goals in the next 218 games, when he'll be 40, which is still averaging a little under 40 goals per season, after over-performing for at least the past 3 seasons. We're somehow in a best world scenario and this would be a totally ridiculous expectation of anyone else, including The Great One ! But unbelievably, we're now pretty much out of doubt which would have been rational about anyone else at any other time, in part because he might be able to pull it off before he's 40 and in part because he should be able to slug through at least 1 or 2 seasons past 40 were he not to make it before that, none of which were a given 3 years ago, imo

Are you joking? Breaking Gretzky’s goal record would be an incredible and impressive achievement, but would nowhere near make Ovechkin the best of all time. Gretzky’s stats are so far ahead it’s insane; goals are just one aspect of his game.
