Port Stephens is a lovely part of the world. We were up there at the end of last year. So many great beaches and hiking trails. I had a friend that grew up in a country affected by war and she couldn't stand the sound of fireworks because of that. It only just occurred to me when you talked about PTSD that this was probably a PTSD response. It'd be interesting to know how much the allocation of campsite affected the overall result. I think the final 4 would have been the same, but availability of food was so different amongst the contestants and I'm sure that would have had a big impact on the mental game and morale.

Thank you for your commentary on PTSD. It's a very real and horrible condition that is swept under the carpet or minimised by many people, often with fixed ideas about how rEaL mEn should act and deal with trauma. I've lost a couple of ADF mates to it and although we are doing much better with it these days, we still have a long way to go.

It shows the intensity during the trigger. But it lasts a lot longer than shown. You can't focus on what you were doing and while in a heightened state other things can trigger you that wouldn't normally. Then your exhausted and can have disorientated feelings and struggle to focus making simple tasks difficult. As well as the frustration of not achieving what you could have if you hadn't been triggered. Catch up isn't always posible depending on the frequency and length of episodes. So then home starts to become messy with incomplete projects. Social networks fade and disappear as you retreat from things that trigger you. Desperate for some relief from the intensity of it all. Also your surroundings can becomc scocally unacceptable. I feel a lot of mental health drugs suppress the symptoms but not the triggers or the body's atempt at chemical responses causing even more trauma at an unconscious level. Time and space safe from triggers can help bring the bodys anxiety levels down. Then reintroduce positive experiences around triggers. A very personal thing and support isn't always available at the opertun time for individuals to take advantage of this withdrawal and engage cycle. He articulates it well during a trigger let's hope people do learn from it what it's like for all PTSD suffers not just soldiers

@seanalexander9531 Рік тому
@@juliewilliams489 thank you for the further insight. I have a mate with serious PTSD and he'd almost definitely be dead without medication, but I hope that he can eventually not rely on it. He disappears every now and then for a few weeks for treatment, which as far as I know is on top of medication, eg CBT etc. I look forward to having him back one day in the best shape that he can be.
@juliewilliams489
@juliewilliams489 Рік тому
@@seanalexander9531 he may never be what he was but he is still in there. It is good to have someone who remembers and respects who he was and still is rather than how the condition and medication can outwardly make him appear. Medication has its place and can save lives and take the edge off. It's not a bad thing when respected and not expected to do more than it can, it helps some more than others. If it helps the mind focus enough to able to reason and make the most of the CBT theripy then that's great. Sadly to often people are given the drugs but don't get the therapy they need. Some have terrible withdrawals even though they say they don't. And need careful monitoring for safty of other bodily functions. I've heard of ex solders sleeping in there cars scared if they sleep with there partners they may wake up thinking there back on the battlefield and hurt them. It's very sad. I wasnt a solder but the thing that helped me the most was understanding that like a lit fire cracker in the hand it will do a lot more damage if the hand is closed around it than if the hand is open when it goes off. I found the emotions the same. The more I tried to contain and control the emotions the worse they would get and the longer they would last. It was better to use that energy productively some how and let it burn its self out. Not the anger but the adrenalin. For me when younger I'd dig a new garden or foundations or something. I'd plan and peg it out when I could focus. Then during an atack I'd just dig, angry at first throwing all the energy into the swings of the madock. But with time mindfulness would step in and I'd realise I'd calmed down, in the moment only focused on where the next swing would go. The physical exercise would tire me physically and I'd sleep better and I'd have somthing of value for my pain. Everyone is different. It would depend on his physical Injuries if he has any. I belive it just needs to be something useful that alows the flight/fight/freeze response body chemistry to be used. What ever task requres the use of motor memory rather than higher reasoning. Computer games can be helpful too like candy crush familiar enough to just swip colours but make you focus enough that other triggers/spaces fade away in the moment. Usefully in drs waiting rooms or at night when you can't sleep but have to be quiet for others. What might be useful to him would depend on his gifts and interests. But trying to do something that requires focus, control and thought is not suitable while the rush of the atack is washing over me. All the best in supporting hem. He's lucky to have you.

Hi Mike. I'm glad you made a point in this recap of mentioning your proactive fishing strategies you employed from the get go. The edit hasn't shown enough of this unfortunately. But the carpentry narrative has been really engaging none-the-less. Hope you catch and smoke some eels soon.

I’m rather intrigued to know if you or any of the contestants have done the following. Using your head torch’s to attract small fish life and insects that live in the water that are the food chain For all living creatures in this and every dam.. These can be scooped up using a T-shirt. They can be eaten as is or just boiled up. It is so easy to get a complete cup full ?

A mate at work has a conspiracy theory about Alone. In one or two episodes it showed you making a trap and having a close call with a padymelon. Then nothing more in the show about it. The conspiracy is that you got one but the video was too graphic to show so they completely cut it out. I tried to reason with them that if that was the case why would they show any of the trap construction/set at all. You did a lot better in your canoe/kayak than I did in one I made. Mine floated too well and was super tippy and I ended upside down in it first two times in it. I had to do it twice as I wasn't filming the first one hahaha. Made outriggers from dry bags and happy days after that. I'm now thinking a small oval shaped coracle with 2 paddles and rowlocks on the sides will be my next bushcraft watercraft and will hopefully take me a lot less time and effort to make.
@OutbackMike
@OutbackMike Рік тому
😂 funny theory. There’s just not enough time in the episodes to show everything that happens. Yeah, kayaks can be tricky buggers.

Tell your mate that in TV land, producers will curate and televise edited footage grabs for the purpose of cultivating interest, drama and suspense. These promotional grabs are not intended for continuity and certainly never provide insight into the finale. Hope this explanation can put your mates mind to rest.

Why did they choose a location that you can't eat anything everything is protected and 8 out of 10 people with very little skills and almost no background with hunting. I really enjoyed the usa version but this Aussie version is making Australians look hopeless, truly embarassing to watch. As a Aussie that grew up in remote northern territory I can't see how they've chosen these people.
@seanalexander9531
@seanalexander9531 Рік тому
Perhaps they made it deliberately different to the USA version? And deliberately harder? This is just speculating of course. There's also a much smaller pool of people who would a) want to do it and b) pass all the testing - we have about 1/15 of the USA's population.

@GODS-PUNISHER Рік тому
@@vk1vxgmb340 Hunting is huge in Aussieland, although mostly for ferals/pest, in my state and in my area they estimate at least 1 million deer are in the bush, they are even here in my small country town. Plenty of foxes, rabbits, there are pigs and goats as well, so plenty of bush tucker to hunt for. Regarding the hunting as per Alone Australia, Tassie has plenty of bush tucker as well, but most only come out at night.
