My instinct would have been to braid it. But twisting two does the trick. Better friction on each strand to hold them all together I suppose. A Juniper fell in my front yard. Hopefully it has to sat for too long to harvest the cambium. Thanks!

Those lakes are amazing! What land is it? Private, state, national park? Interesting that people are hunting and grazing cows and just getting around.
@OutbackMike11 годин тому
It’s public land (i think) managed by the BLM (Bureau of Land Management). The US is amazing in this regard. Australia has far less area’s of spectacular beauty that allow this amount of freedom. In fairness though, the US has a far greater area of spectacular scenery than Australia. People that haven’t flown around the US and Australia a lot and studied from the air might shoot me down over this comment. Those that have won’t.

How the hell have I not known the existence of this video! The algorithm certainly let me down on this one. Clay Hayes! Hands down my favourite Alone contestant. Extremely knowledgeable and skilled plus a great person and family man to boot. This is a fantastic different angle into his world. Brilliant!

I taught survival when I was on the teams..But I always carry a lighter, especially/always in high elevation situations..Conditions can change very quickly in spring and fall, and even summer if your high enough..I've known or known of, dozens of highly experienced people that died of exposure in the west..Sure, use a bow drill, but have a lighter, in case your life comes to depend on it. I use small bait fish lures in glacial/alpine lakes..That area is generally where I elk hunt..But Idaho has alot of different landscapes, you will find very thick bush/forests/woods in Idaho also..Even some sun in that cave.Looks like Clay would have been smart to tag along with you to find elk..
@OutbackMike11 годин тому
I totally agree with you. A lighter is the best thing to have in a survival kit to start a fire. It’s what I normally use.
@realeyesrealizereallies68282 дні тому
On the show, you were seen looking for worms under logs and scratching the ground with your foot or a stick..Did you ever dig holes with your axe or knife to search for worms where they actually live, several inches in the dirt ?..Or did they just not show you digging ? I've been digging up worms for decades, and have never been unsuccessful..The other thing is did you ever just sit still in your Kayak to try and fish, rather than troll fishing ? I don't think the moon phases was the issue, it's a coincidence, correlation doesn't indicate causation..And how about hunting at night for nocturnal animals, with just a club ? Great job brother. Luck is always the biggest factor for people who already possess hunting, fishing and survival skills..We can influence luck, but we can't make fish or animals materialize..You're determination was next level..And I do think that you got hosed by the producers for other reasons than covid, like their budget and who they wanted to win for the narrative, and the continued success of their show..That is the way the real world works..Great attitude though..
@OutbackMike11 годин тому
Thanks. I dug deep a lot. I made a wooden shovel to dig with and often dug in the softer soil at the lake edge. I built an outrigger to stabilise the kayak so I could I could fish deep too, for hours. They didn’t show it. If it wasn’t moon phase, then it was a hell of coincidence that I could predict, three weeks in advance when I would start to catch fish again and when the fishing would completely switch off. Once again they didn’t show this. Displays of ‘nature connection’ and awareness were ‘reserved’ for others.

Impressive but it would have been better if you hadn't used a chainsaw. You go the distance to do everything by hand, even making a DIY Caliper, but then you threw the chainsaw in. I understand why but if you were going to the extent you did it just would have given it so much more X Factor. I understand why you did it & I completely understand. Just a little nitpicking on my end. Majorly impressed with how you address the minor pieces but still important. Being able to carve them out of thin air! No matter what very impressive & great job! Now, go make a 40 ft one! 😂😂😂😂
@OutbackMike11 годин тому
I agree. The difference is that it would have 4 years to build it completely by hand instead of 14 months with power tool help. This was a self funded adventure so it was difficult enough financially as it was.
@guyh.45535 годин тому
@@OutbackMike ha ha ha 😁😂🤣! Never thought about that. True, very true. There are tribes here in the US burn the centers out. Then they would just chip it out. Now it's time to do a 40 ft dug out! Ha ha ha ha! No matter what, it turned out great!

Bidgee Widgey!! Classic bushwalking prank material because you can’t feel them hit you when your friend throws them at you. But when they start giggling from out of nowhere you get suspicious. The Marchies have been brutal the last couple of years. I try not to complain because we need all the insects we can get. Great video. I would like to see a kids edit!

It looked like almost swamp lands no running current. Amazing you made a canoe to get out. You killed it mate. I'm a light weight so missing even 5 days of food is massive. How wallaby and possums never got caught up in your traps is beyond me. I'm considering applying for Alone. But leg crushed at work has set me back at least 2 years. Why did you choose to combine traditional dugout techniques with planking/nailing/caulking?

I was using what ever techniques were available to an 1846 shipwreck survivor. I placed myself in his historic situation. The power tools were just to speed up repeated steps.
