The deep bonds of the German American friendship, and the deep bonds between soldiers, were on display on December 8, 2011, as German Ambassador Peter Ammon presented one of Germany's most significant military honors to a US soldier who was instrumental in the rescue during battle of a Bundeswehr soldier in Afghanistan.
U.S. Staff Sergeant Peter Woken was awarded the Medal of Honor for Gallantry in Action of the Federal Republic of Germany, bestowed on him by German Defense Minister Thomas de Maizière, in recognition of his role as part of the MedEvac crew that landed in heavy fire to evacuate German Corporal Tim Focken in Afghanistan on October 17, 2010.

So many people were involved. I am but a small part in the group that made this rescue possible. I remember every step; from the German and US Commanders working together the instant the call came in -to all eight team members having to unanimously agree to take this dangerous mission. Eight brave Soldiers in the team lead by CPT Abigail Horvath received this award in our successful efforts to save the life of another coalition-forces Soldier. I felt safe flying with the Commander herself and our highest ranking maintenance test pilot on site. This flight was some of the best flying I’ve seen in my entire military flying career. Abby and Aaron, thank you both for bringing SGT James Brown and I home alive along with our brother in arms CPL Tim Focken. I have the greatest respect for our MEDEVAC teams that fight the good fight. Thank you all who have watched this video and understand the significance of how far we have come as nations,Germany and The United States of America.

@@tonyjones1560 yeah man, the German troops were fun guys to hang with and they sure could drink some Bier. My first time stationed in Germany I was there under USAREUR, with the 39th Trans at Ktown in 1991. I went back many other times to different places in Germany with different units after I changed MOS, but I remember my first time with most fondness because it was a whole new adventure of discovery for me. I fell in love with Germany, the culture, the people, the language... I wish I could have a secondary citizenship to that country because it feels like home every time I've visited. Maybe I should have married a German girl lol. I was going to visit Germany last year as a civilian for the first time, but had to cancel all plans with this Covid mess. Our medal of honor in America has never been bestowed on a foreign national in until 2010 that was the same for you Germans. I may not be able to understand the full scope but I just imagine what it would be like if a German received the American medal of honor. For us it is the highest award we could possibly give and most people who earn it do so with their lives I would imagine it’s pretty similar to the German Medal of Honor. it’s very moving and prideful and I truly think it encompasses the spirit of being American we do not run we do not hide“ simply put if you’re fighting with us It is the same to us as if you were an American yourself

@@ihavenoname3014 As of today , nobody really knows why we went to war in 1917 . The biggest reason was political and Germany was never our enemy at that time . They weren’t even called “Germans” back then . They were commonly referred to as “The Hun” . All of Europe at that time was in conflict with each other’s neighbors . 1/2 of Europe’s Monarchy were the offspring of Queen Victoria . Europe was Class Structural, War was a common measure of failed diplomacy. Great Britain and The Germans were in a deadlock in the worlds biggest mud hole called France. More soldiers were dying of cholera, and infection than enemy bullets . The British were finished . They used and called up every reserve , commonwealth, territory to fight for them . So they called the U.S. to break the stalemate . But under no circumstances were we ever Enemies. Do you have HBO ? Watch the ending of Band Of Brothers . When the German Officers surrendered, they allowed them to retain their personal weapons . They were trusted . We had no quarrel with them . Too many German Officers were educated in America. The Empire Of Japan was our sworn enemy . Tito Mussolini spoke out against the US , however he spoke for himself after his entire army laid down their weapons. We fought Germans in WWII to free Europe. We had no quarrel with the German Empire or the people . Only their elected leader and his party . Sound familiar? In the mid 1980’s , I was stationed in Germany . I was a regular at a pub and made friends. The Pub Owner’s Father Visited on Saturday’s . We always talked . He always reminded me of how wonderfully he was treated as a POW during WWII . He was shipped to Texas where he was given a job on a farm . He was paid $5 a week, Fed 3 times a day, he loved it ! The 1930’s were lean times for Germany , he was paid more as a POW than as a Soldier . I spent my last 3 years in the Army with the 82nd Airborne Division . I was 89 Days And a Wake-Up On December 18 when we were flown to our ASP in Homestead AFB In Florida in the middle of the night . We dumped our gear and took a MAX Ammo Load for a Low Altitude Jump. We were getting ready to invade a strategic enemy . Panama . We trained , armed, equipped, and fed their military . 6 hours later , I’m shooting them up outside the Commandancia HQ. I never had so much fun in my life ! A week later , All was well . Manuel Noriega surrendered , we killed 1/3 of his PDF and his “Dignity Battalions “ , loyal supporters - A Familiar Theme . Panama is now a Banking Hub Of South/Central America . But we were never enemies with Panama . I have a CIB , Combat Jump Wings , Bronze Star From those 4 days of no sleep . To all those who find it so amazing that 80 years after WWII to old enemies are suddenly friends, well - it's actually not that weird, and far from being a unique case. History is full of similar stories, and even more astonishing - countries that in the middle of the war changed sides, and the same person who was yesterday's enemy that you had to kill or he would have killed you, is suddenly a friend, and vice versa. 80 years is a very long time, until not so long ago a war broke every several years with new allies and new enemies. Of course, WWII was one in a kind, but still. Today you can see in Blue Flag exercises German and Israeli jets sharing formations (the Bundeswehr's cross and the David Star together) and even maintaining intimate relations. That's life, always has been.

Seeing this without being moved would be an under statement. A soldier will fight and may die , not for what any politician or general will say. But for the guy next to him. We see neither race, color or country. We see a comrade who needs our help and we give it with out question. And so we give that which may be required. We ask not for medals, but went they are given that is the highest award you can offer. Thanks from one Devil Dog to a fellow solider.

@Marshmallow Man Weird? Perhaps you’ve never examined the SOFA between Germany, NATO, and the USA. I’ve been stationed there for years and always been impressed by the warmth and welcome they extend to Americans! Who could blame them for not wanting 17 year old males away from their homes for the first time? You have to be able to differentiate between German economic aims and German leadership in Industry, Sciences, and the Arts. We now have a tiny presence in Germany since the Cold War, and at some point that will be no presence. Economics is a practical reason for an American and NATO presence, Germany spending what, 2% of GDP? The Americans spend what, 5%? And no, most Germans do not hate the USA-they have partnered in anti-piracy, training in Afghanistan, and numerous other joint missions. There are real differences, but the core relationship is the same since the Cold War. The anti-Europeans sentiment in this country is really, really shocking-amongst a subset of a certain Party. No surprise there, that’s existed since the First World War. And the money spent supporting Allies is part of a successful strategy since WW2 to not look for Allies in the midst of a conflict-but build them beforehand. Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, and Rumania and Ukraine would currently welcome a greater NATO presence. Something to think about.

Unfortunately, we are not told where and during which mission this rescue took place, but the US soldier always behaved in a comradely manner and fulfilled his duty. However, the war in Ukraine with German participation is by no means acceptable and it is a disgrace that those in power in Germany are supporting this war in the interests of the USA. Dignity and honor, for whom should that apply? Certainly not for the soldiers who are putting their lives on the line, they don't even realize it!

Indeed, I know we have been "friends" for many years it does seem a little weird as you were such a strong foe during WW2.It also seems weird that both soldiers are alive to tell about the incident that led to the award. If it would still exist. It Was decided to be not awarded again as it's Reputation is spoiled by who issued it and for what in the past. Until today, no one found a way to restore it's honor, so it still can not be issued again. This way, the "Ehrenmedallie der Bundeswehr" translate as medal of honor, is not only the second best thing possible, but in fact the best thing possible to award.
@PiconPrimeKnight

Well there are still crosses in fact ... the one he got is called "Ehrenmedaille der Bundeswehr" ... German medals of Honour are ranked in 7 categorys. Wolken got the lowest rank medal, all higher ranked Medals of Honour are Crosses instead of Medals. The highest German Medal of honour is called "Cross of Honour for Valour" or "Ehrenkreuz der Bundeswehr für Tapferkeit" in German wich was only awarded 4 times to this day.
