There are quite a few things to do in and around Bath UK! I've fallen completely in love with Stourhead, and the entire National Trust system in the UK. So many incredible estates from the past are open to the public, and experiencing all of them is definitely a bucket list item of mine now!

Just to avoid any confusion for people who might think they need to get a pass to access the national parks, as thats what it sounded like at the start of the video... you can get into National Parks for free, no pass required. The National Trust is a separate thing, its a charity which manages land and properties all over the UK, and membership grants access to National Trust properties - stately homes, castles, gardens, places like that. You can still get into those places without membership, but you have to pay on the door. The national trust also manages quite a lot of land, but you usually don't have to pay to access it, they just look after it, sometimes on behalf of local authorities. Basically if there isn't a wall around it and someone in a ticket booth, there's no need for any sort of permit.
@CulpFiction

Hi! Yep, I realize that. I was comparing the UK National Trust system to our American National Parks system at that point. :)

Yeah, but it’s also worth pointing out that the National Trust owns a lot of land in National Parks, and membership gets you free parking there. So CulpFiction is right to recommend membership. It may be too late now, but I hope they used their membership to get in free at Stonehenge too

We DID have a picnic in Stourhead 35 years ago, and D found the white Wine was awful. I thought there was nothing wrong with it. We then discovered she was pregnant; the first sign. National Parks, by the way, are Government created, free to enter, and ownership might be the local councils or private owners. Membership of the National Trust gets you free into all their houses and properties, and free parking for their preserved woods and areas of natural beauty. Love your videos! And... you got that those were tin mines in Cornwall? Tin is quite rare in the world. The Romans (and the Phonaecians? Aaaagh! How do you spell this. I should know...) came to Cornwall to mine tin.

On driving: One tip on driving in different countries the steering wheel should be near the middle of the road, if it is near the curb (sidewalk) you are on the wrong side of the road. Mistakes aren't usually made in the first few days but after a couple of weeks when drivers become complacent or jump in their car to drive the morning after a party!

I have watched lots of these type of videos and none of them mention that Britain is criss-crossed by about 150,000 of miles footpaths, bridleways and byways. These will take you over farmland, moors and parkland; along canals, rivers and disused railways; and through woodland, farmyards and even people's back gardens. The majority of footpaths are shown on Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 maps. Also, lots of organisations publish circular walks using these footpaths, or you can plan your own - just take a compass.
@Split10uk
@Split10uk 5 років тому
You are so right..our public footpaths are taken for granted. I think a channel called The Endless Adventure pointed out how many public footpaths there are in the UK that allow people to explore more or less anywhere unlike the USA. Not much chance of being shot in the UK for trespassing either.

Its true our country has a very generous and intricate public footpath network allowing you to see probably every vista there is in the country for free, taking you through farmland and places you'd never think of going. I went to Ireland once with a couple of friends and we couldn't find a single footpath or hiking trail.

Nothing - and I mean, really, absolutely nothing - is more extraordinary in Britain than the beauty of the countryside. Nowhere in the world is there a landscape that has been more intensively utilized - more mined, farmed, quarried, covered with cities and clanging factories, threaded with motorways and railway lines - and yet remains so comprehensively and reliably lovely over most of its extent. It is the happiest accident in history. In terms of natural wonders, you know, Britain is a pretty unspectacular place. It has no alpine peaks or broad rift valleys, no mighty gorges or thundering cataracts. It is built to really quite a modest scale. And yet with a few unassuming natural endowments, a great deal of time and an unfailing instinct for improvement, the makers of Britain created the most superlatively park-like landscapes, the most orderly cities, the handsomest provincial towns, the jauntiest seaside resorts, the stateliest homes, the most dreamily spired, cathedral-rich, castle-strewn, abbey-bedecked, folly-scattered, green-wooded, winding-laned, sheep-dotted, plumply hedgerowed, well-tended, sublimely decorated 50,318 square miles the world has ever known - almost none of it undertaken with aesthetics in mind, but all of it adding up to something that is, quite often, perfect. What an achievement that is. And what a joy it is to walk in it. England and Wales have 130,000 miles of public footpaths, about 2.2 miles of path for every square mile of area. People in Britain don’t realize how extraordinary that is. If you told someone in the Midwest of America, where I come from, that you intended to spend the weekend walking across farmland, they would look at you as if you were out of your mind. You couldn’t do it anyway. Every field you crossed would end in a barrier of barbed wire. You would find no helpful stiles, no kissing gates, no beckoning wooden footpath posts to guide you on your way. All you would get would be a farmer with a shotgun wondering what the hell you were doing blundering around in his alfalfa. So if there is one thing I enjoy and admire in Britain, it is the pleasure of being on foot and at large in the open air. I was on the South Downs Way, which runs for 100 miles from Winchester to Eastbourne along the rolling chalk downs of the south coast. I have done most of the trail in chunks over the years, but this is my favourite stretch. To my left were bosomy hills of green and gold, to the right a spangled plane of bright blue sea. Dividing the two were cliffs of brilliant white. You can, if you dare, creep right up to the cliff edge and look over. Generally you find a straight drop down 200ft to a rocky beach. But almost no one ever does this. It’s too unnerving and way too dangerous. These cliff edges are crumbly, so everyone keeps well back. Even frolicking dogs brake and retreat when they see the fall. All along this stretch of coast the path is a grassy lawn, cropped by sheep, sometimes hundreds of yards wide, so even the most absent-minded walker - the sort of person who can’t be trusted around automated parking barriers, say - can amble along in a state of blissful unawareness and remain safe........................Bill Bryson American writer living in England

NATIONAL TRUST PASS Just to clarify... First off an excellent choice to get one by the way. Especially if your planning to go to allot of national Trust "properties" (estates / houses/ castles etc).... The national parks , and NT costal paths/areas etc do not need a pass but usually car parks within them, which are owned by the Trust do charge ,if however, you have a pass these are free!... Also allot of national Trust properties which you have to pay for are not just discounted but are free with the pass. There are other benefits also... so yes, worth looking into if your travelling around the UK. NT have many many places of interest right across the country.

A lot of Americans and Australians wonder why some of our roads are so thin? Its because some were bridle paths built hundreds of years ago before the invention of cars and were used purely by Hoarse and cart. Some are even built by the Romans. Hence why there so tiny.
