An American driving in the UK for the first time can be a scary thing... you're driving on the wrong side of the road, after all! In this video, I show you guys the first few days of my big UK road trip, including driving on the left side of the road for the first time!

Hey guys! A lot of you were asking for more videos of my trip to the UK, so I put them all in a playlist for you! Feel free to come along for the journey here! ukposts.info/slow/PL-KdG_p4Hp_ZzaMW73kNH7Fj5-CNExZjJ PS, yes, I know it's not the "wrong" side of the road, just the left. I was just poking fun. 😉 Love all you silly Brits. ❤️

Americans planning on coming to the UK should read www.highwaycodeuk.co.uk/ ... you can buy it bookshops also. Because there are MANY differences between the rules of the road in the UK compared to North America.. it is not JUST about driving on the left.

+hauskalainen Very good advice, however please share it with home grown UK drivers, as many of them either don't have a clue or don't care - which doesn't make life easier for visitors!

In England if you pass your test in an auto you cannot drive a manual. If you pass in a Manual you can drive both.
@CulpFiction
@CulpFiction 5 років тому
Yes, I actually knew that! That's why I was the designated driver for this trip. :) My friend didn't have experience driving a manual, but I grew up driving one.
@Landie_Man

CulpFiction I don’t think it would matter for your friend as you have an American licence :)
@CulpFiction
@CulpFiction 5 років тому
Sorry, I meant that my friend is simply less experienced than I am when it comes to driving manual, whether she's licensed that way or not. Legally, it wouldn't matter since we both have American licenses, but practically speaking, it made more sense for me to be the driver because of our different driving backgrounds.

CulpFiction ah I see! Cool though how did you find doing 60mph American highway speed down teeny narrow lanes?
@CulpFiction
@CulpFiction 5 років тому
That was terrifying haha! At home, those same roads would have a speed limit of maybe 20-30mph. Going double that definitely took some getting used to!

The most embarrassing thing about this video is all the sarcastic/nasty comments from some of the British. It’s fantastic to see people visiting our country and great to see people enjoying their stay. Stop being pricks about it. I’ve driven in America and it’s stressful being on the other side of the road in the other side of the car. Give them a break.

Sarcasm is British HUMOUR, no need to bitch about it.... there was none in the video anyway.

Not stressful at all actually. I lived in Cincinnati for 6 years and I found driving on the right easier than here. Wasn't too keen on getting stuck behind a school bus mind!

Aye, driving on the other side of the car, on the ‘wrong’ side of the road is no joke! When I went to the States with my American missus I intended to do the driving but in the end was happy to cede the wheel to the person who was used to driving on the left side of the car and the right-hand side of the road :eek: :).

As a Brit I LOVE seeing people from different nationalities explore British culture and see the sights of the UK. I'm from Crawley (the town where Gatwick Airport is), so it was especially nice to see what you thought of the places local to me. It also seems like you visited during the best time (lots of unpredictable weather here!). I hope you enjoyed your stay!

The reason we drive on the left goes back a long way. As most people are right handed, it was to do with riding a Horse or Chariot using left hand and having your right hand to use your sword or pistol and we have been doing it since the Roman era, except they didn't of course have pistols back then. Just like always getting on aircraft (airplanes) on the left, as you would mount a Horse from the left, anything else was "Ungentlemanly" as the early aircraft (biplanes, etc) you would actually mount the lower wing to climb into, so boarding from the left became the standard, still used on modern aircraft, that's why the pilot in command in side by side aircraft always sits on the left.although not in Helicopters.

Always amused by Americans expressing surprise that we use the imperial system - where do you think the 'imperial' part came from, exactly? :-)
@CulpFiction
@CulpFiction 5 років тому
It's just that we get made fun of so much for using fahrenheit and NOT using the metric system that I didn't realize that the UK hadn't completely moved over to completely metric either!
@MervynPartin
@MervynPartin 5 років тому
To CulpFiction- The UK would have gone completely metric years ago if wasn't for the dithering old idiots in government who couldn't organise a coffee morning in a Starbucks! At least we can buy our milk in litres from our local shop. As for driving, I've driven in the UK and US (and other countries) for years and personally, I would prefer to drive on the right, in my automatic car, with road signs in kilometres (Like Canada)
@MervynPartin
@MervynPartin 5 років тому
C cG -I have reported your disgusting libel to UKposts
@ForgottenMan2009
@ForgottenMan2009 5 років тому
sort of but sort of not. The milk mentioned by Mervyn is still in pints ..but is labelled in metric equivalents. And your cider was a pint.. petrol ( gas) is dispensed in litres but I'm always mentally converting as a gallon is somehow more 'real' than litres and miles more real than km... if you are 'doing the ton' in miles you are really moving whereas 100km/h is what you get to in 2nd gear.. Sadly, the speed measurement of furlongs/fortnight is no longer widely used :-(
@MervynPartin
@MervynPartin 5 років тому
ForgottenMan2009 - The milk to which I am referring is distributed by Muller (who took over Wiseman dairies and then Dairy Crest) and is sold in 1 litre (and 2 litre) plastic bottles, without even carrying a pint equivalent on the label. We stopped having the milk delivered in 1 pint glass bottles because they take up too much room in the fridge. In the US, buying milk from the supermarket is in fractions of a (US) quart and you also have to choose what fat content percentage you want and if you need calcium or vitamin enriched! Practically impossible to just dash into the store and grab a bottle of semi-skimmed!

I don`t ever have a problem driving on the other side of the road, all you have to remember is that if you are driving then you should be closer to the centre of the road, if you are nearest where the pedestrians usually are, then you are on the wrong side of the road.

The " shed" they stayed in was actually an old railway workers hut. They would be towed along the railway to where they were needed and used either for accomadation or to store tools etc. Many of them finished up as garden sheds or turned into small homes.

A useful tip if you are driving on the "wrong" side of the road - make a big arrow on a piece of card with a felt pen, and stick the card to the dashboard with the arrow pointing to the left or right, so you see it all the time you are driving. The most dangerous time is when you have stopped for a meal, and then start driving again - your subconscious wants to start driving on your "normal" side of the road... This tip helped me a lot when I first started driving in Europe on the "wrong" side of the road...

Tip for all American drivers over here. Do not undersetimate distances! Over here because of the density of road users, even on amotorway you will average only 50 miles an hour so 200 miles will take you 4 hours PLUS a comfort stop! So Brighton to Dartmoor (it is in DEVEON btw) is 250 miles or around 5/6 hours solid driving. A Brit on holiday would split the journey to see other sites along the way.

The difference between a cottage and a shepherd's pie is, one is minced beef, think of a shepherd, the other is minced lamb...

Next time you have to see the cliffs at Beachy Head In Eastbourne, they often get confused with the cliffs of Dover by some tourists when planning their visit online but are much much better

Tip for visiting Americans, the car hire (rental) companies also do automatics, consider requesting one, because why make things more difficult when you've already got enough changes to adapt to? Unless you're going to be here a long time the small additional cost is probably well worth it.

Dover had its peak popularity around 1939/40. The tourist board wasn't very friendly, and if you though immegration was bad today, you should of seen it then. Joking aside, if you walk them cliffs you'll find a load of oll pill boxes and built in gun encampments with corridors and rooms branching off them in the cliffs.

My boyfriend describes Scotland driving,mainly the sides of the road and how you shouldn't be as scared if someone looks like they are coming head on at you. That's just from driving in Scotland. American driving is wild because of the size of the automobiles. Not just large trucks but the haulers,the tractor trailers,still make my heart race when I drive close to them.

Your chosen distances are very ambitious - it's not freeway all the way. I live in Switzerland and visit every summer with my Swiss wife. It's more relaxing when you plan max 100 -150 miles a day and get time to actually see & visit things instead of driving all the time. I guess you would do it slightly differently if you did it again, wouldn't you? But nice to see the great places you visited - makes me realize what a great place it is. All the best, Rob

Hi Rob! The first day was definitely extremely ambitious, and if I could do it all over again, I would have definitely slowed down. BUT farther into our journey (see the pinned comment for the rest of the videos in this playlist) we actually did slow down quite a bit. :) Especially up in Scotland, each day was beautiful and full of so much to see, so we weren't driving as far on a daily basis.

Driving abroad is terrifying for the first time. The first time I drove was in Spain. Picked the car up from the rental desk on the outskirts of the city, they gave us a map.....but not a street map so we had to find our way out of the city with no maps. Our satnav wasn't working, whilst still trying to master LHD cars.

Well, all the obvious ones like temples and shrines in Kyoto of course. But, there's much to see of the beaten track also. Japan's culture is so unique you'll probably be fascinated by just going into a supermarket.

UK 65.64 million people, 242,495 km², 12,429 km of coast. US 325.7 million people, 9.834 million km², 153646 km of coast. We've got 8.2 times the population density but only 40% the population per km of coastline, so smaller homes closer together and more coast per person *but* you were at the beach closest to London that isn't downstream of London's sewage treatment works and such sunny days are still considered a rarity here. If you'd been up at Clashnessie, you'd have seen nobody else (and it wouldn't have been quite as warm).

Dartmoor is in Devon, not Cornwall. I know this because I can see it from my house, and I live 40 miles from Cornwall, in Devon. Just sayin'.
@CulpFiction
@CulpFiction 5 років тому
You're right! I should have said we were driving "toward" Cornwall. We spent only a night in Devon, and immediately went to Cornwall the next day, so I kind of lumped them all together in my head.
@sgthree
@sgthree 5 років тому
Just make sure if you have a cream tea, you do it the correct way around. Devon (which is right in all things!) is cream first then Jam on top. Cornwall (where people are cloven hoofed) put their jam on first then the cream on top - wrong just so wrong!
@techalyzer2251

Daniel Saint oh no. I think I’m the devil 😬 I always do jam first because I put a full mountain of cream on and I can’t balance jam on top of it 😂

*shakes head in despair* Do you put the butter on the bread after the jam? NO, you do not! So why would you put the cream on last??

Daniel Saint I’m sorry 😭 maybe it’s my technique. Essentially, spoon as much clotted cream as is humanly possible and then shove it one the scone and hope it doesn’t fall off before it gets to your mouth 😂😂

When I have driven in the USA and Germany, I haven't found driving on the right difficult, as long as I keep thinking and don't rely on instinct. American road signs can be a challenge, though. Many of them are heraldic. A blue shield with curly edges means something different, for instance, from a yellow shield with straight edges. Then there are the esoteric verbal instructions LEFT TURN MUST YIELD (yield what?) and so on. And the four-way stops. But it's fun. I love the US because, if you want it and you have the money, you can have it. What colour would you like?

Fun fact...the Americans USED to drive (horse wagons) on the left, just like us.. but switched due to the pioneers towing their wagons westward, which led to wider wagons, which led to the need to sit on the right because traditionally, that was their 'whip' hand for the horses, leaving their left hand to hold the reigns in a central position.

CulpFiction I did look up on SeatGeek look very legit but they charge additional $17 seller fee. I might going to stick with Stubhub but problem is that the prices are very different like on mobile app it’s $75 but online $79 I’ve no clue which one should I trust. But really want to see their show but it’s hard find a right price.
