@@johnnyblack4261 32bit is only Limited to 4GB on Windows... Linux with a PAE kernel allows for 64GB, but 1 process cannot address more than 4GB. Also, none of that applies in this case because these cpu's are not x86_64. These are OpenSource solutions. Traditional x86_64 cpu's have totally different and Proprietary ISA, these use a PowerISA and allow for open source ISA's. In comparison these are 12 core processors with 8 threads per core. so these are 96 thread cpu's. I could go on and on, but you need to do research on what cpu architectures are and how they work.

Raptor sells POWER9 for $375 (quad core) up to $2625 (22-core). They're surprisingly reasonably priced. They're also screaming fast for a lot of workloads. Unfortunately, the platform is still quite expensive, you won't find anything like a cheap X99 board that takes a Xeon chip. Cheapest board is $975 for a really cut down one with two memory and two PCIe slots.

Check out the G5 Macs. They were essentially Power 5 systems from 2003-2005 that could rival PCs that came out around 5 years later. The downside to them was huge amounts of heat and large power consumption, that's why the G5 never made it to a laptop, and the heat, why it never reached 3GHz. It seems they've finally figured all that out though. Massive potential here.

How do you make a profit by selling stuff when there are no working Economies after "the next civilization wiping solar flare" fucking yeeted all of humanity back into the dark middle ages? + It would be a modern day version of the middle ages - dark ages with a fuck ton of people + an even bigger fuck ton of pretty scary weapons which still work fine after solar flares. All you accomplish, if you truly have the only working (now extremely valueable) pre-crisis technology on your hands, would be getting People to hunt you down and take everything away from you by force (and maybe even kill you). You only make yourself a target for powerful people, which means the only way for you to pull that off would be for you to actually have the means to really defend yourself in case someone tries anything... but that is probably impossible, because you surely won't have the upper hand if some nato forces decide to show up and "appropriate" literally all of your technology. lmao

Thank you Linus, you magnificent bastard, for finally doing a video about Talos II and Blackbird! Shame it took IBM sponsorship for you to do it, but it's great to see all the same. I love the idea of this architecture and want to see open hardware and alternatives to Intel/AMD finally return to the marketplace. We used to have choices back in the good old days, when even Windows NT was available for a few different hardware platforms, including PowerPC.

Fun fact regarding solar flares. In the year 2012 a solar flare happened and missed us by a margin of 9 days. If it had hit the earth the damage would have been in the trillions in USA alone. So yeah scary stuff.

Very impressive if you compare it to the Windows world. I manage a big VMware/Windows/Linux serverfarm, but (except VMware & Linux) the Windows servers needs a lot of attention & reboots.

@Shonicheck
@Shonicheck 3 роки тому
They are an assortment of them actually. Though since Risc-v is just an architecture and not even a core(not too mention that since it's modular as fuck, it's not even completly binary compatible with one another, however the same goes for x86, with it's still rising opcodes number), they are not interchangeable in any way. Not too mention that apart from sifive no one manufactures cpu/soc or boards(i mean they are c910 from alibaba but it is under comercial licence and to my knowledge it got no devboard so to speak of) that can be considered ready for desktop work in terms of perfomance and the one from sifive is kinda more on par with a rasberry pi, then conventional pc.

@narkoid
@narkoid 5 років тому
@@master74200 I'm just half joking. That said if you truly want to transcode a real 4k video with surround sound down to something like 480p stero on a weak cellular connection, shoddy hotel WiFi, or plane wifi can handle on the fly then you need some serious power for even one stream. Pretty much all my devices are direct stream or direct play compatible but still. My current supermicro 4u dual Xeon e5 2650 Plex server 32TB SAS rig can handle one 4k transcode with subtitles if it's doing nothing else. You can always just creat optimized 720p versions of files tho.
@master74200
@master74200 5 років тому
@@narkoid The problem is doing it on-the-fly of course. I've never been in a situation where I couldn't handle 720p but still handle 480p, so I've lucked out on that part. But encoding in different resolutions ahead of time sure is ideal, but also very space consuming of course. I don't have 32TB of space, but I also don't have any devices that play 4k, so for me a 1080p version works by far most of the time for anything.
