Thraco-Ilirians vs Slavs?!?! How could possibly someone assimilate whole Balkan peninsula without all historians writing about such huge event.. Even descriptions of slavs are not same from author to author... And 1 book is falsely translated from Greek to Latin so it apperes that "Slavs invaded Balkan" while in Greek says "They made uprising/rebellion"... In official history "Slav" is coined "umbrella" term that will start to appear around 6 century...

@Everything you can imagine is real The fact that the byzantines continued to call themself romans, because they wanted to be associated to the great Roman empire, doesn't mean they were. The byzantines were greeks in population, culture, religion, language..... Basically in everything. The eastern roman empire remained roman just for a few centurys, with Eraclius we can say it started the byzantine empire.

@@ludovicomichelangeli1908 and the romans had been adopters of greek culture and religion too. The eastern empire was split from west only by name and conquest. Two halves ruled by two emperors of one empire. The byzantines *are* the romans, there is no distinction between them, only cultural shift (as with all nations) over the centuries.

An interesting note about the "Proto-Slavs", is that they were originally single-celled creatures that utilized their store of mitochondria (the powerhouse of the cell) to create protective coverings known as "track suits", that provided warmth and comfort while they squatted.

Yaroslav and sviatopolk lore is actually so awesome. It sounds like something straight out of a movie. All the elements of a good story are present. Even a main protagonist and antagonist with ambition. His fathers stories too. So interesting. (Even if it may be wrong in it’s real depiction of events)

Erm, GOT was literally based on the Wars of the Roses, G.R.R. Martin has literally stated this in multiple interviews. No dragons obviously, but much of the politics and the various backstabbing was as, if not more batshit insane in real life in Medieval Europe as it is in GoT!!!

The Slavic God of the sun was called Yarlo. Interestingly enough, one of my grandfathers comes from a small village in Northwest Bulgaria called Yarlovitsa. It is amazing that this "divine" toponym from pre-Christian times survived...

@@Deguu68 If something in Slavic ends in "tsa" like (Borovitsa, Yarlovitsa, Kamenitsa and etc.) this is a type of feminine vocative case ending, and is used like a place of something. Borovitsa means a place with alot of pines.

As a Norwegian its so weird to hear this part of history, both how totally alien to the homogenic north this story of wave after wave of different peoples crossing east and west, some disappeared into the lists of time, some being prominent even today, is, and also how big a role people from Scandinavia played.

The north isn't as homogenic as you might think and the Scandinavian influence is somewhat overblown due to Germanic bias during the intial research (19th century)

Lately, due to the Russian invasion and the extensive media coverage from Ukraine, when watching various documentary news segment from Ukraine pretty much on a daily basis, it has struck me over and over that a not so insignificant proportion of Ukrainians *seem to share the characteristic Scandinavian facial features.* I haven't seen these facial features in any other slavic country, and this excellent documentary maybe could offer a possible explanation to my hypothesis. Yet at first glance it could seem somewhat unlikely due to the distant time frame during which the Varangians arrived and furthermore prospored in today's Ukraine. However as I've noticed it repeatedly, I'm becoming more and more convinced that the *Varangian bloodline* actually IS visible in some Ukranians up to this day..!

What is important to understand Kievan Rus is a term of modern historians. No one in the time of Kievan Rus did not say Kievan Rus. All people inside and outside the country simply said this country is Rus. As a result, over time, it turned into the word Russia.

3:25 The map here actually makes them cut into lands held by the Vandals & others. The area is almost certainly confined by the vistula in the west & extended slightly farther south as evidenced by archeological findings.

This is impressive planning and high level management. Before coffee this morning, I failed to notice the length of this upload and therefore note that this is a compilation of content I have already watched. While I have watched the same stories multiple times as presented on several different channels, I usually avoid watching the same edutainment content multiple times from the same source. As usual for this channel, the storytelling is so fantastic I scarcely noticed the fact that I had already watched the content from the start. Honestly (and this is my main point in writing), I noticed the first musical transition formula around 20 minutes in and then noticed the length of the upload at this point. Later transitions were less noticeable. Maybe I am being too imaginative in my assumptions, but I get the impression that this upload's storytelling and flow is more planned than the typical compilation type of content on YT. You know, the type that is clearly an afterthought in planning and flow. If this is the case and this compilation was the storyboard plan from the start, first, bravo, this is a very impressive step in the growth of storytelling skills here. Even after my realization about having watched this before, I could not stop rewatching after being drawn in to the story. Also, as a bit of constructive feedback along this line of thought (and totally unnecessary), if you could mask the original episode ending musical crescendo just a tiny bit better, I would probably only notice the length of time I have watched after a much longer stretch of time, if at all. For a new viewer or anyone that has not already watched the original first upload, I imagine this is a mute point. However, as someone that routinely avoids rewatching content for what I perceive as emotional frivolity, if you can get someone like me to overlook such a bias, I think you may really break out into the type of content many people want to watch multiple times just for the emotional roller-coaster ride, like how some people watch animation films from the traditional corporate media professional studios. - That's just my intuitive take as a general viewer. I think all you would really need to do is design the background music at one level higher where you simply replace the final segments from individual episodes with something slightly more subtle and transitional to help blend in the slower pace of the next episode. This would be something like the last 2% of polish on this type of compilation. This is already honestly one of the best compilations I have ever watched, and one of the only ones I have ever watched despite having already watched piecemeal. Thanks for the upload, and congratulations on the state of your art. -Jake

If someone came up to me and said "let me tell you all about the history of Kievan Rus in the middle ages, it'll be fun" I would never have believed them. This was seriously so interesting to watch, particularly SAINT Olga.... whose story blows my mind that not only was she cunning and brutal, but also made a saint!

This is a toponym (same as "Moscow Rus", "Vladimir-Sudal Rus", "Novgorod Rus", "Carpathian Rus", "Chervonnaya Rus", etc.), which was introduced by Russian historiographers of the 19th century Klyuchevsky, Kostomarov and Ilovaisky to designate certain periods and principalities in the general history of the formation of the Russian state. It was just Rus, not "Kievan Rus". Such a state as "Muscovy" also never existed. It was the Russian State, not "Muscovy".

Subutai definitely didn't get Ruthenia in winter at his first arrival in 1223. In case he did it in 1237, he had a lot of "russian" aliens headed by Yaroslav Vsevolodovich.

There is a mistake in this video, the golden horn is not a strait nor connects with Sea of Marmara it is a harbour coming off the Bosphorus strait (which connects to the Sea of Marmara). The golden horn could be used as a place of refuge for Byzantine ships during an attack and is a physical barrier for forces attempting to attack Constantinople. Great video though !

Alexandr Nevsky wasn't looking for allies for the fight against Horde. The real story was: The Catholic west wanted to "help" Nevsky for the exchange that Nevsky will bring catholicism to Russia. Of course Nevsky refused and went on with his army against Horde by his own alone with no western "allies".

Cyril and Methodius arrived in Rome in 868, where the new pope, Adrian II, took their side and formally authorized the use of the Slavic liturgy. When Cyril died in 869, Adrian sent Methodius back to the Slavs as his legate and archbishop of Sirmium. Methodius's ecclesiastical province included all of Moravia.

@Kings and Generals this was a very good documentary, for which I feel the need to express my written gratitude! What I enjoy most about you guys ia the tendency to be as objective as possible - for example, when insisting about the Alexander Nevsky's battle in water, you have multiple angles of looking at the situation. Unfortunately, when you mention the Christian schism in 1054, you don't have the same tendency and you just throw the affirmation that the Orthodox world initiated a schism with the Catholic world. When, in fact, the Papal emissaries that had come to Constantinople were the ones excommunicating in that city the representing Patriarch (basically, in the Eastern Roman world's home) and, thus the whole world that later became known as Orthodox. After this schism the eastern roman representatives chose this name for their faith (from ortho doxa), while the Western Roman chose theirs (Catholic). It may seem insignifiant, but for some of you watchers (like myself) I do hope it came as an error and is not mentioned in bad faith - it would be a pitty! For the political implications of this faith that you also mentioned, there's no doubt they existed! Cheers to such a good added value to your viewer's lives, thanks to your work :)

@@2MinuteHockey Here in Czechia we have Saint Wenceslas. He ruled over Bohemia (old name for Czechia) in the first half of the 10th century. Instead of fighting with the Eastern Frankish kingdom, he prefered to pay them a tribute. The Nazis were using this story of the Czech patron saint as their propaganda... That tribute back then consisted of "120 oxes and 500 libres of silver". Well, sending those oxes (the word is in Czech often used to mean "idiot") to Germany turned to be a very bad idea in the end...

About 30 years ago I watched a wonderful documentary on an early Canadian cable channel covering all topics religious that explored the differences between Orthodox and Catholic Christianity. An Orthodox bishop was interviewed about the essential parameters of that tradition. When asked to compare and contrast the differences and similarities of both traditions, under his luxuriant beard and his black robes blowing in a brisk breeze atop some hill overlooking fertile valleys, he grinned a toothy smile and said, "You mean the first Protestants?" Bam! What an efficient response and with such subtle wit. I've always felt some odd affection for the Orthodox form of Christianity because of that. Why weren't the differences debated in Godly respect rsther than literally militarizing their gripes? Human;nwhat are you gonna do, eh?

I love this compilations of the history of a folk. I would love to see sometime if you have enough historical sources the history of my ancestors, the Hungarians. I'm aware you have done some vids about battles in particular, but the inmediate pre migration and early period of the Grand Principality/Kingdom is very interesting, for me at least. Polish and Hungarian history is not much featured anywhere, maybe bc of the lack of sources (I don't know). Love the content, keep up the good work guys!
