Sascha Zverev -- the owner of the best two-handed backhand in the game today just behind Djokovic. Very few players can dictate, redirect the shots against the flow of the rally, hit with brute power, along with variety (in spin and flight) on their two-handed backhand like Zverev. The difference today was Rublev's back-hand was functional, while Sascha's is a full-fledged weapon.

Rublev didn't seem like he was in it, judging from the highlights. The intensity wasn't there. More importantly, it looked like he struggled to do damage. Zverev looked like the notably better mover. I would like to see Rublev improve on his explosiveness and movement on the court. I think for his height and build, he should be better. The slice defense on both sides can use some work so that the top guys don't pick on it. Otherwise, judging from the highlights, it really looked like Rublev couldn't damage Zverev consistently enough. If that's the case, that could explain Rublev's body language. I'm pretty sure Rublev follows Rafa's philosophy where one hones in on being able to deal enough damage to work their way to victory. If you can't deal damage, or you struggle to, you're not really going to believe in your chances of winning. Anyways. That went on long enough. Congrats still to both Zverev and Rublev for a great tournament. Both players had to overcome two of their toughest rivals to get to this match. Bravo!

I agree with all you said, I believe the semi held yesterday against Tsitsipas was the real final on this tournament and I also believe Rublev has potential to improve his playing and mental level being consistently in final stages of Tournaments like Cinci, clearly today he didn't play his best tennis (probably neither Zverev) The four guys in semi's are the real deal in next years to come. Cheers!

@@antonydandan6255 I'll add one thing to what you said about Rublev. For him to get to where he is now, rankings and result wise, with what he has right now, at his age, that's something already. Here's the thing. Yes, Rublev, Tsitsipas, Ruud etc. weren't really at their best. But they were pretty close honestly. None of them played badly this is just a new unstoppable Zverev. I'm so happy for him. Such a classy guy when he wins, and sure when he loses a bit salty, but he's always honest, and quite authentic in his speaches. The sky's the limit Sacha! And this is no accident mind you. For Sacha to win all he needs is a stable forehand and to hit more aces than double faults. If one of those breaks down he's in trouble. But after the olympics where he outplayed the best version of djokovic he looks like a new player indeed. All that's left is to win a slam. Can he do it at the us open? Well let's put it this way. He had djokovic in his hands at his favourite slam, and was one set away from a slam final in paris. As good as he was at those slams, this is his favourite turf now. Yes he got mentally fucked at the final last year, but he has a shot. And to put it in context djokovic choked 7 set points in two sets in the us open in 2007 his first slam final. Now he simply never chokes again.

Zverev has elevated his game so much in the past 12 months. Much more aggressive and a lot more consistent on his serve. Rublev needs to get it out of his system that he is/wants to be the hardest ball striker. Quite often you can see that he is going for an even harder shot when actually he should put some variation into the rally.

This match summed up Rublev. No plan b. The only thing he knows is to hit everything flat and hard and if that doesnt work he is screwed. Similar to Ostapenko but not quite as bad. It's a shame cause I really want him to win bigger titles. Maybe he should text Tsitsipas' dad during his breaks.

Zverev burst into limelight when djokovic, nadal and fed were on their absolute peak. He has learnt a lot from these big 3. However he had that mental block of winning finals. Now that he won in tokyo Olympics, his willpower has gone up. He was unplayable today. He is definitely future no 1 alongside Daniel Medvedev and hope he wins US open this season. As for Rublev he is a top 4 player at best and will never win big title like milos raonic, just too one dimensional, hit hard as you can , no variety in shots and inconsistent player.
@Keepcalm-lovesports
@Keepcalm-lovesports 2 роки тому
you mean djokovic. Zverev played his first grand slam round in 2015 I believe. That was when Federer hasn't won a slam in 3 years, Nadal is badly injured and on a low and Djokovic is in course for a real Grand Slam. Djokovic is very strong still and the other two as well, but Nadals prime is around 2010 and Federers even earlier.

Zverev was and is just young. Times are over when a Becker wins Wimbledon with 16. Where were we with 20/21? Sitting on the balcony and looking after short skirts, Zverev already played Quarters in GS. And the final last year was very bad luck, Thiem was hyper nervous either and the lucky winner in the end.
