Ordered a pair of these to arrive today as I just wasn’t getting on with the AirPods Pro 2 and in-ear audio. Came across your review and what a fantastic review it is! Covered all the main (important) points, clear and obviously experienced in audio but didn’t come across as egotistical about it! great review, thank you. and yeah as a 30 year hollywood sound mixer/producer myself I LOVE these headphones but only for 'casual use' when I'm walking my pups and that's about it. I can walk around the neighborhood with headphones I can count on sounding good enough for enjoying the outside and staying within the apple 'ecosystem'. I own the Airpods Pro 2nd gen too and what an improvement as the sound vs 1st gen is amazing. Definitely recommend both for casual use. Professional or advanced/skilled use for careers in the music business, no way. ;)

Thanks for the way you laid out your perspective. I practically own all the other AirPods and most of their Beats headphones too. These are the only significant listening device from the ecosystem I do not have. However, your assessment was basically my impressions of them (minus any actual experience with them). Funny enough, I am not a serious audiophile or even an audiophile per se’… I came by most of said devices as promotions with purchase of other products, or a discount so good, not to be missed… I have to hand it to you, this was one of, if not the most comprehensive review of the AirPods Max I have come across… Thanks again… 🤔

@2:56 Its because the sensors are placed where your back ear lobe are nearest. If the headphones are put on backwards, the sensor doesn't detect the ear as its where the hole (pit/preauricular) is at. so it doesn't play.

Great assessment. Ultimately its wireless so the sound will take a hit, but as a set of cans for the road warrior who’s in apple ecosystem these seemed pegged to be my replacement for my wired AKG NC when the battery takes a crap. I have my LCD-Xs for when i want to tuck into music at home.

You've nailed this review. I'm in the Apple eco-system, but happy to be critical when Apple don't hit the mark (I'm thinking about the Airpods Pro 1st gen here, which were crap). But the Airpods Max headphones are exceptional with noise cancelling and transparency mode. I'm wearing these 10 hours a day, six days a week for both work (meetings and music) and entertainment (UKposts/Netflix/audio). These Airpods Max are heavy compared to other headphones, but extremely comfortable. The transparency mode has worked so well that Apple are amping this up with Airpods Pro 2nd gen and the new Apple Vision Pro (transparency with both audio and vision). Expensive, but highly recommended. Finally, the microphones are awesome for meetings when you're speaking and the baby is crying in the background. I've given up asking people if they can here whatever loud noises are happening in the office or home, as they just can't hear it. Here's the thing... in transparency mode... you can monitor the kids in the background whilst on a meeting.... but the meeting participants cannot hear anything but your voice when you're speaking. Such a great product.

Did you try them with both noise canceling and transparency off? They do sound different (and better, less muffled). Yes they are important features but you don't always need them, and I'm curious which mode(s) your sound quality comments apply to. Anyway great video.

Great review! This is about how most of these reviews have been since their release. I find them to be used as a luxury listing device rather than having MIND BLOWING sound. I did find the Noise Cancellation and Transparency modes to be as bad ass as you described it. I was also VERY disappointed that they don't support Lossless audio as Apple had updated Apple Music to support higher quality audio about a month or two after they released these headphones. You can still hard wire them to a Mac or a DAC to get better audio but it's not the full effect and it's....well...wired haha. I would also like you to review the Dolby ATMOS feature these headphones support on Apple Music and would like your take on that as well!

Let me help you here with your question about Dolby atmos. It’s a bit of a hit or miss with music where some songs sound meh while other songs sound like you’re in the center of a stage with musicians all around you and if you close your eyes you can picture where each of them are standing. However this is where it’s ALWAYS a HIT and that’s when watching movies that have Dolby atmos on Apple TV or an iPhone/iPad/mac. If you’ve ever experienced a Dolby atmos home theatre then you’ll know exactly what to expect from these headphones. There are sounds coming from everywhere and you can almost turn your head to look at where the sound is coming from and there have been times when I would be watching alone while the family is sleeping and suddenly feel like I’m watching through speakers and gonna end up waking everybody up before realizing it’s all coming from the headphones 😂

I just got the AirPods Pro 2 with the H2 chip (Max has H1) Dude.. I’ve been deaf in my right ear for 15 years, I’m used to life in mono. The transparency mode has made it to where I can hear in stereo again. It’s like the hearing aide I couldn’t afford. For $250 kinda life changing. ANC and transparency… apples doing it better than Bose at least. I can’t speak on XM4/5 cause I don’t have a pair yet.

Bluetooth 5.4 (the latest version) still doesn’t support lossless audio, so that’s hard to blame on Apple. Word has it they may use their own version of Bluetooth to achieve this in the AirPods Max 2, which would be pretty cool as long as they keep the price the same.

You made a very valid point with 2/3 of the price being for wireless and noise control technology. I think this applies to pretty much all bluetooth ANC headphones, with only a few exceptions having a better or even worse sound-to-price ratio.

Being a proffessional bass player, and working with quite high end headphones sennheiser hd800 as a reference, I will really recommend shure aonic 50. IMO the best sound quality in noice cancelling headphones on the market, and half the price of many of the competitors.

Definitely the best transparency and the apple integration is great. The integration is the real selling point, but the noise cancelling needs to go to the Sony 1000xm5. I don’t travel without those.

You didn’t mention spatial audio. When watching a movie with Dolby Atmos via an Apple TV, my iPad, iPhone, or Mac, I can hear the sounds move around, not only from left to right, but front to back, top to bottom, and all around. THAT’S what sold me! 😉

Hey, I currently use the Sony WH-100XM4 and I am thinking of either buying the Sony WH-100XM5 or the AirPod Max. I only use my headphones wired to my PC and never Bluetooth (I have the Samsung Buds 2 Pro for outside use). I like the WH-100XM5 but when I wore the AirPod Max at the Apple store, I loved the weight and design. I have fairly big ears and a massive head lol. The WH-100XM4 are a little tight from the top of my head when fully extended and get very hot (but I love them). What would you recommend that I get? I heard that the sound quality on the Airpod Max is better. Noise Cancelling isn't an issue for me. Just need something that sounds good and will last me a few years. The sleek design of the AirPod Max is great and the ear cups are the perfect size. Do you have any problem when connected to the PC with the AirPod Max? Also, Mic isn't an issue either, I have a gaming mic as my main way to talk and communicate. I have a Windows Pc and Samsung 23 ultra so I'm in the Android eco-system. Any info will be much appreciated.

I’ve tried a few wireless headphones from different brands but always end up returning them because I’m just not in love with how they sound. Hi, I have the px8 and just got the Focal to compare and see if it was worth the switch... Idk if you've tried the B&W but they are superior to the Bathys in my opinion. ANC is similar, but audio quality is better for this type of headphones. The Focal are, in my opinion, more focused for analitical listening, and that is most likely not what you are looking for in any Bluetooth headset. And if you are looking for something analytical, you are better off with any 400-500 wired headphone, UNLESS you plan on having serious music sessions while on the go (which makes no sense for me). The px8 are fun, great for detail retrieval and more comfortable for my head size. You should give them a try.

I'm a big fan of those headphones; the construction is incredibly solid! The audio quality is also fantastic in my opinion. While there are high-end audiophile headphones out there, I don't think it's a fair comparison given the significant price difference. The AirPods Max are geared towards everyday consumers, not professionals willing to spend thousands of dollars on headphones. But I do hope that Apple releases some professional high-tier headphones one day, for the audiophiles out here.

I've had mine for a long time now and love them with the exception of the case and the LED. My use case is primarily consumer level media listening and audio books with noise canceling. I prefer them over the XM4s I also have for the reason that these don't have touch based controls (those led to unpredictable effects as I fall asleep listening to a book and move around in bed).

The pertinent question is how do they compare to other bluetooth noise cancelling headphones. Wired open back headphones for the same price are likely to beat them on sound quality alone.

I agree with everything you reported. Keep in mind that these are not lossless (maybe the next iteration) so these were set up to lose against any decent set of wired headphones already. I feel like you missed a shining light in your review too. Pair these with an Apple TV and watch a recent movie with them. The spatial processing is like voodoo. The phones seem to disappear from your head and sound emanates from within the room. The head tracking makes it even more convincing. I wasn't expecting it to sound that remarkable. I will never sink a ton of dough into a surround setup again.

Although I don’t own one, I’ve always harbored hopes of buying one of these. Given that I’m a part-time amateur music composer and producer, I had always wanted to hear a professional music producer’s opinion of them. Thank you for your great and candid review. I was hoping you might give a hint about what you would suggest as a good quality wired pair of headphones for the same price as these - $500. Not asking for a single recommendation, just a few choices. I’m sure there are very high quality headphones at far higher prices. But I have a family to feed, and shallow pockets 😅.

@@ThereIsOnlyOneRandom ldac is better than aac since ldac is sony proprietary bluetooth codec but it's built into android since android 8.0. when sony partnered with google to implement ldac on android 8.0 since the lossy compression bit rate at 990 kbps at its highest quality compared to 320 kbps aac. There is no way to have 990 kbps on all the time since it changes between 330 kbps, 660 kbps and 990k kbps for ldac depending on the connection of the bluetooth. Even ldac sounds better than apt-x hd since the highest quality it offers is 576 kbps until qualcomm releases lossless audio available to more devices since the nura true pro is the only bluetooth earbuds that offer lossless audio over bluetooth with 1 mpbs but goes down to 140 kbps to avoid drop outs and glitches in extreme conditions due to rf interference with the bluetooth connection. The focal bathys is a way better headphone than the airpod max since it has dac mode that offers lossless audio from the usb c port over a wired connection compared to relying on a bluetooth codec and connection.

Loved this, Colt! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us all. It's so great to hear your perspective on the APM's. It's funny because I bought an open box pair for an insane price and I would easily pay full retail for them. They've become one of my favorite Apple products I've ever owned. If they ever make 2nd version, I hope they would hire you to share your feedback. Despite their shortcomings, I still love the way the way they work within the Apple ecosystem. I know there are way cheaper and better sounding cans around, but if you are just a casual Apple listener, they are a lot of fun.

Personally, I find the head tracking spatial audio a bit annoying. And the fixed spatial audio to be just fine, not incredible or groundbreaking. Definitely nothing like sitting in the real room.

@@ColtCapperruneTech The spatial surround sound audio is highly towards movies mixed in proper Dolby Atmos, DTS:X etc and is a complete different animal for that purpose. The music industry is so far behind and lacking mixing in proper multi-channel audio, and have tested myself the new Airpods pro 2 and compared them with my Dolby Dimension headphones, which in turn are targeted for movies specifically, and yes, Apple just slays them beyond and is definitely not a gimmick from my perspective. If your're a movie entusiast like me who wants to watch movies in your silent without disturbing you neighbors, at this moment the best possible way - these are the ones to the get!

I always have a headache when ever used this plus my ears ache too because of the pressure clamping or its about the padding

If I wanted to do some music work on a flight, would you recommend these? Or is there another pair that you like? Not for any serious mixing of course but just for composing or arranging. I normally use DT 990s for music production but of course they are open backed and don’t have noise cancellation so they’re pretty bad for flights. And of course any Bluetooth earbuds are out because of the latency. Thoughts? Thanks!
