Arch Linux Install and How to Dual Boot with Windows 10 (UEFI) this is a Step by Step Guide/Tutorial that will show you how to install Arch Linux and Dual Boot it with Windows 10. This is intended for users who need a guide/tutorial to follow that's in depth. There's many steps to this, but if done right you can have Arch Linux and Windows 10 both on the same system. You simply get a choice at the beginning of boot in the GRUB menu to chose between which one you want to launch. Arch Linux in 2021.

Thanks for the useful vid. afaik os-prober is now disabled by default, which means before calling grub-mkconfig you will have to edit /etc/default/grub and add the line GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false Just leaving this here since this guide carried me through the installation process numerous times

Thanks for guiding me through that grub installation. I read through the documentation but got confused. First time I forgot to mount the efi partition. Second time I realized my prior mistakes and mostly followed your tutorial and it worked like a charm. Documentation didn't include os-prober which really helped.

If you would like to create a separate larger EFI partition please check out my other video: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/e2N1k6exrm9l12w.html
@rjley
@rjley 3 роки тому
What are the pros/cons of creating another EFI partition like in your other video?
@SavvyNik
@SavvyNik 3 роки тому
@@rjley - I guess the pro of having separate partitions is that you won't have the potential of messing up your win EFI partition if you do something wrong. Also you won't have to resize the EFI partition since Arch recommends 512MB+ and Win only comes with 100MB. Some of the cons are that I've heard of people having issues with updating their EFI partitions since they have two separate ones, however, I haven't had any personally. Also that it might seem a little redundant since multiple operating system boots can be installed on one EFI so why not resize the EFI? Arch recommends the latter. I think you can run into issues with re-installing Windows if you have 2 EFI partitions as well, but haven't confirmed this. It could be that it may not know which partition to use in that case, but I'm sure you can get around it if you were to manually reconfigure the disk EFI partitions =)

This was the only guide that worked (with a few minor changes ofcourse) for me, February 2021 with a thinkpad t490. I had a different experience using cfdisk. There was no entry for free space, making it a different process. The other steps and overal approach worked well for me.

@@SavvyNik I don't think the tool changed, but I think @jajohns8 might be talking about the same issue I ran into following this guide. cfdisk only listed the USB that the arch iso was on, nothing else. After some Googling I found that the issue was I'm using an NVMe instead of a SSD or HDD. So I just ran cfdisk against my NVMe and it worked. I'm using a Dell Latitude 7290 and this guide, other than that small issue, worked perfectly. Thanks mate.

@SavvyNik

@Dennis M - No problem, ask away! Glad you enjoy my explanations. Well to start off do you know you can launch a tty directly from your desktop environment? Try CTRL+ALT+F1 or F2 (it might be a different F key) that would be the simplest way instead of adding another boot entry to grub. I wasn't able to mount the EFI partition so I just ignored it then the issue came back when installing grub. Good thing the exit command exists and it let me mount it this time or else I would've had to start over. -Only problem I'm having is it didn't detect windows but at least I'm still able to manually boot into the Windows boot manager through my UEFI settings.- I got it fixed

@SavvyNik
@SavvyNik 3 роки тому
You're probably better off following this version of the install on your second disk: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/e2N1k6exrm9l12w.html In this video there's a new EFI partition created. Which is what you would need to do in order to separate the operating systems on two disks. Also when finished you will need to select between the disks in BIOs in order to switch operating systems since the bootloaders will be unaware of each other (since they're going to be on separate disks). You might want to refer to this video at the end of things though in order to install the proper network packages.

Tip: If you get to launch grub, but arch linux does not show up, check if when you run grub-mkconfig it detects /boot/vmlinuz-linux. If it does not, check if such a file is in your /boot. If not, run 'pacman -Sy linux linux-firmware' (without '), after that they should be present and you can run grub-mkconfig again and proceed.

No way to access files between the two easily. Other than a USB storage device. You can reserve however much you want for Arch. Usually it's suggested at a minimum 8GB.

This doesn't effect your BIOs. My thought is that you have the wrong key to get into your BIOs or your are spamming it at the wrong time. I would look up your motherboard and try figuring out what is the correct key to get into BIOs and spam it as soon as you start up the computer until you get in.

Hi! Thanks for the excellent work and tutorials! Just discovered your channel and tried to follow your two tutorials for dual booting Arch and Windows 10. Sadly, both times, after finishing the installation and configuration with no errors, my Acer laptop only boots to Windows 10. Tried to disable safe boot on BIOS (it was disabled already, but I did try to enable it, reboot, and disable again). No success... Then tried to change boot order on bios (doesn't shows up a GRUB option, then tried using windows bootloader first, and after that tried to choose the hard drive itself).. still no go. Tried to disable UEFI just to see what happens, and then I get the grub rescue menu... Any ideas about what to try next? Thanks in advance!!! Regards and keep up the great work!

@SavvyNik 3 роки тому
Thanks Fabio for the kind remarks!! Sounds like you did everything right. Have you ever been able to see GRUB after the installation? Secure boot should be disabled like you had it in the beginning and the only other thing I could think of in BIOs that might cause an issue is if you have Fast Boot enabled. It should be disabled if you have that option. Other than that I'm not sure what is giving you so much trouble. When you made your GRUB config I assume you had no errors and it showed both Linux and Windows as detected.
@fabiorlsouza
@fabiorlsouza 3 роки тому
@@SavvyNik Hi Nik! Thanks for the Quick answer! No, GRUB never appeared during the boot. The system simply starts on Windows 10. Yes, I really believe I did everything right, and double checked a few times. Also, Safe boot is off. The only way I saw any signal of GRUB was when I disabled UEFI, so booting in Legacy Mode, and got GRUB RESCUE> menu. To me, looks like it is something specifically related to the Acer Aspire F15 laptop I am using.

Also, using supergrub on an usb-drive, I am able to see the option to boot in arch linux and it does work fine. Using this method I am able to boot in arch linux without any errors (obviously using UEFI boot mode). Supergrub shows the following entries: Linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux (hd2,gpt5) >> this boots directly to Arch Linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux (single) (hd2,gpt5) (hd2,gpt1)/efi/Boot/bootx64.efi (hd2,gpt1) >> this boots to grub where I can choose Arch or Windows (hd2,gpt1)/efi/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi (hd2,gpt1) >> this boots directly to Windows, so looks like this is the one the system is using... (hd2,gpt1)/efi/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgr.efi (hd2,gpt1) >> this returns error messages (hd2,gpt1)/efi/Microsoft/Boot/memtest.efi (hd2,gpt1) (hd2,gpt1)/EFI/Boot/bootx64.efi (hd2,gpt1) >> this boots to grub where I can choose Arch or Windows (hd2,gpt1)/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi (hd2,gpt1) >> this boots directly to Windows, so looks like this is the one the system is using... (hd2,gpt1)/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgr.efi (hd2,gpt1) >> this returns error messages (hd2,gpt1)/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/memtest.efi (hd2,gpt1) Now I am researching about how to change those entries, making those booting directly to windows to follow the commands on those booting correctly into GRUB menu.

I answer myself: when prompting cfdisk STOP add whatever its your hardrive when you prompt frisk -l ("l" like in "lake" or "last"). So first, do next: i.e.: fdisk -l (then it will prompt the name of your hard drive) /dev/hardDriveName /dev/UsbName ---- So you have to write: cfdisk /dev/hardDriveName --- then and only then you can continue the tutorial (select Free Space...etc)
