I saw this for the first time as a teenager in Arizona. Only play I had ever been to.

This version of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is sooo exciting for me. I had the opportunity to play this part back in 2001! Wow, how time passes. I am sitting here rehearsing the lines in my mind. The confidence of an actress it takes to make this part come alive is just truly amazing. You have to be someone completely opposite of yourself. The best part for me was that I actually had a chance to meet the playwright August Wilson himself before his passing. He spoke at the University of Alabama. Wow

WOO CHILE, THIS WOMAN WAS GOOD. I WANT TO SEE THE WHOLE PLAY. THIS IS THE BEST I'VE SEEN THUS FAR OUT OF THE PLAY SNIPPETS ON UKposts SINCE I WATCHED THE MOVIE LAST NIGHT 12/19/2020 WHICH WAS SATURDAY NIGHT, WHERE VIOLA DAVIS PLAYED MA RAINEY. SHE DID AWESOME. I JUST WISHED THEY HAD SHOWN MORE OF MA RAINEY. OVER HALF OF THE MOVIE WAS SHOWING THE BAND IN THAT OLD ROOM TALKING, LAUGHING, FIGHTING, AND KILLING. I WAS BUMMED. I'VE ONLY SEEN ABOUT 4 DIFFERENT WOMEN PLAY MA ON UKposts SO FAR, SO LET'S SEE WHO CAN TOP THIS WOMAN BECAUSE SHE WAS GREAT.

Ma Rainey is in the movie more than she is in the play. I suggest you buy a copy and read it. Most of the first act is the band cuttin up, they took out the whole smoking weed bit...

I can't understand why in the hell that ELDERLY folk are cast as jazz musicians in the 1920s. Jazz and Blues in the 1920s was music for the young. The old folks HATED jazz/blues back then.
@battlehands46673 роки тому
This is blues, this is pre jazz.
@kafenwar3 роки тому
@@battlehands4667 It doesn't matter. No black musicians in their sixties and seventies were performing either blues or jazz at that time period. They thought this music was obscene. LITERALLY. Ma Rainey didn't have old men in her band for several reasons, least of all because the old pre-blues, pre-ragtime black musicians could not even play blues OR jazz...Blues was not even known to most black Americans before c. 1900.

what were the old folks were listening then?

To appease the white elderly theatre fan base who prefers to experience "racial history education entertainment" with non-sexually threatening black men?
