It’s the garlic. My grandfather was the same way and in Georgia the Cherokee used to eat a wild version that is a cross between an onion and garlic that grows in the mountains called Ramps. They have festivals at some little mountain towns. I took some and cooked some country ham in a cast iron skillet and ended up taking the skillet camping and heating it up and hanging it in a tree and we didn’t have one damn skillet, or friend that came close to the camp as for the ham that I cooked with it, I love country ham, so I had to give it a decent burial and a Christian pryer....broke my heart. It was traditionally used as a bug repellent as it is secreted from your pours if you can bring yourself to eat it. It is much different than garlic and I guess if you are introduced to it early enough and if my old granny could have worked some of her mountain magic on it in an ancient ScotsIrish recipe, I might not even known what was sliding down my gullet! We’ve speculated that they use the cedar bark. Several of the cedars are stripped from a foot up to about seven feet up. 🤔👍👍

Probably wasn’t a recluse then. Normally they’re not very large,... their body is about the size of a large grain of popcorn and the legs extend around the size of a nickel. You would much more likely have it hiding under the toilet seat instead of out in the open. Maybe what you had was a wolf spider. They’re larger and similar in color except a little more hairy 😳😳😳😳

Several times we’ve found different cedar trees out there with the bark peeled off. Sometimes as high as 7 or 8 feet up. It makes us think that they might be rubbing with it for the cedar oil. Cedar is a natural bug repellent 🤔🤔
