I got the 5800H/3070 one with the 165hz 1440p display. It's an absolute beast and I love it. I've also seen the 3070 hit 130W in some games which surprised me as I thought it was limited to 125 :D

I bought 5900HX/3060 one for productivity purpose. Good performance and CPU quiet. But if activate turbo mode in Armoury Crate the laptop became noisy. Is this normal?

@@tncson8941 Yes, should be. Just it is much noisy compare to performance mode and only 5-10% improvement.

@@tongyinwang215 yeah part of the reason is CPU/GPU have an optimal frequency range where they have the best performance/watt, when you pass this range they would need a lot more power to gain additional performance. More Watt = More heat -> fan have to spin much faster to cool for minimal gain -> much noisier.

@@tongyinwang215 from my own experience and watching other laptop review, turbo mode is most of the time unbearably loud and it's there when you need maximum perfomance out of your laptop only.

I like what Asus is doing this year. Type C charging on all laptops, Ryzen options, improved cooling, great tuning in their software, iGPU mode, large batteries and decent screens although I would've liked to see more 16:10 but that seems to be mostly reserved for Intel TGL H45 this year (Asus M16 and some 16" gaming Dell Inspiron so far).

"improved cooling". I keep hearing this and it is laughable as most latest strixes and zephyruses are in the 85-95C league since a long time - and that is with the 21 C ambient temp. Can't even imagine what throttling will be in the summer when ambient temps can go to 25-26C. But if consumers are dumb and buy everything anyway , why bother ... ; Gaming Laptops are a joke to the consumers , shitty cooling and laughable manufacturing quality (looking at you lenovo and asus) at extreme prices.

Hi Guys Firstly great review, I thought I would just add that I bought the scar 17 with the same specs. Couldn't be happier with my purchase. I would just want to add the below: DSR/VSR does in fact work on this laptop, but you need to enable it via the Radeon control panel. These laptops have great mining performance and because you use your iGPU for most desktop functions it's also very stable to use while mining and even play older games. The vega iGPU really rocks for older games. MSI Afterburner allows for higher memory OC's than the Asus Armoury software. I play most triple-A games on 1440p, especially when getting CPU bound. (VSR/DSR really makes a difference here)

Hello Jarrod. I can't believe you haven't yet reviewed the new Lenovo Legion 5 Pro as it has nearly everything and amazing cooling. I already own 2 of these beasts, and I did not expect them to be that much better. Think of it : 3070 @ 140MHz, Mux switch, webcam (hello, Asus ?), HDMI 2.1, 16;10 1600p 165Hz HDR400 16" display. And the thermals have really surprised me. Would love you to test it to see if I missed anything good or bad with the beast.

I went with the 5800h and the 3070 with the qhd display, I think this spec is the sweet spot with price to performance, and I’ll probably upgrade the ram in the future

@@Jcrash1 Hello friend! I've had the same laptop for two years now. I have nothing to complain about, except the CPU temperature. Sometimes it hits 70° in light use in performance mode. When I download it, it hits 88° and in games it reaches up to 96°. The solution I found was disabling the processor's turboboost. I'm thinking of changing the liquid metal and thermal paste. Does your 5800h get hot too?

Sir, you should have tested with latest Nvidia Drivers and latest bios as it enables Nvidia Resizable Bar. There is increase in gaming performance and increase in FPS.

Sadly on indonesia this scar and Rog strix g15(2021) does not have the 1440p 165Hz display option. They force us to only buy the 1080p 300Hz

Hey Jarrod....Love your videos but I have a question(its a bit irrelevant), I have a dell g5 15 5590 and as you had reviewed the same laptop in the dell G5 15 5590 thermal testing video, you were getting 90 degrees on AIDA64 with a undervolt of -0.15 volts. I did the same thing in throttlestop and the undervolt applies but mine still reaches 100 degrees celsius , thermal throttles to around 3.5 Ghz all cores. Any opinion?

Is there any tweaks like Ryzen Master to provide more power than 45W during combined load? Another interesting fact I noticed in Gizmosliptech review than in Turbo mode, the CPU somehow performs better than Manual mode with full fan speed, probably due to Turbo mode allowing cpu to pull more power than max allowed in Manual mode.

My 3070 scar was beating or matching a lot of the legion 5 pro scores posted. even without a mux switch, pretty nuts considering 10w less and no mux. There's also the 3080 versions with fhd panels for $2000. That's a crazy deal.

Scar 15 seems like is more suited to multitasking so for example if you want to stream and record. Tyring to stream with an intel cpu is like setting the laptop on fire.

I'm bit confused. The model they are selling in India don't have that keystone and arrow keys are small. Otherwise the design looks exactly the same. But they included the 1080p 60fps webcam in box.

at 3:06 you can clearly see back light bleeding from the lower right corner and upper right. It might be glare from room lighting but thats what it looks like to me anyway

Could you test the games with 32 GB RAM. That appears to have a tremendous impact on performance in the Scar 15. Otherwise the gpu doesn’t hit the full wattage in games (even in your gaming test it was at 95W average instead of 115W)

Would you recommend buying this or Zephyrus G15 or should I wait for Alienware M15 R4(bit expensive though). Form what I have heard is that Zephyrus has a lower powered 3080 at 80 watts. I need a laptop majorly for coding purposes but I also play CSGO occasionally.

Is Afterburner not an option on these? Plan on overclocking slightly while mining. Can’t get anything to highlight for me to adjust. Wouldn’t imagine being able to use it since everything is integrated.

Hello, I love your videos and I see the big part of them, but I have a question. You said that hdmi it connects to the cpu graphics and usb type c connects to gpu graphics (in this laptop), so my question is if I buy a laptop how can I now if the hdmi or dp connects to gpu graphics and not to the cpu graphics, because I will buy a laptop but I would want to use it with my 144hz monitor and play as well as possible. Hi Jarrod, after watching a lot heap of review videos on the Strix Scar i decided to get the 17 inch version. The laptop is very pretty and smooth to use. However the RGB software is a real mess and I am surprised this hasn't been mentioned anywhere. I have been trying to configure the laptop so that the ROG logo and light bars turn off and remain off when I close the lid to put the laptop to sleep. However the only way I've managed to keep the RGB off during sleep is to press the power button to place the laptop into sleep. It has been a very frustrating experience for something so simple on such an expensive piece of kit. Has anyone here experience this issue?

You need to disable Optimus. Plug it into a monitor and you'll see its true performance in games.

Your reviews are amazing. I learnt a couple of things too. I have the same one (3080) minus the keypad/touchpad feature and have mixed feelings. It's good but not exceptional. Have to be resourceful with settings, especially while recording games with OBS. It struggles, and I have to lower settings in OBS and the game to compromise. I only play Battlefield 2, PES 2021 (modded), and Age of Empires 2 DE. There's no chance of maxing out gfx with this machine. Maybe I expect too much, as I record at 3840x2160 (my external TV resolution). It kind of frustrates me at times. The lag in particular.

It's probably that you're recording/streaming/playing at 4k. I'd recommend lowering the res and seeing if you still have the same issue.

Hi Jarrod I've the Asus ROG Strix G512 (i7 10750H, RTX 2070) but get only about 80-90fps on warzone on low to medium settings. I was hoping to get over or atleast about 100fps. Am i missing any setting tweaks or is 80-90 fps the max it can get. Thanks

Hi Jarrod, I've been going over some of your videos to see which laptop is the quietest while still performing well. And I've noticed that this Scar 15 seems to be underperforming in silent mode in Shadow of the Tomb Raider compared to Legion 7 that you have reviewed and that also has an R9 5900HX and an RTX 3080. The Scar 15 scores 48 fps (in 1080p) in silent mode while the Legion 7 scores 64 fps in silent mode and that in 1600p! But when looking at the Cinebench R23 scores, they are actually very similar in silent mode. The Scar 15 scores 10,215 in multi core and the Legion 7 scores 10,452 in multi core. Why do you think the Scar 15 is underperforming in Shadow of the Tomb Raider while in silent mode? Or am I overlooking something? Thanks!

Hi Jarrod, I may have found the answer myself. Could there be a difference because the Legion 7's RTX 3080 is at 150-165W and the one in Scar 15 at 115-130W? And probably Cinebench R23 is a CPU heavy test? Looking forward to your answer 👍

Hey jarrod, i just found out about this.. if you go into amd radeon software. then go to settings > display> Enable custom color > Then turn off Color temperature control... You can actually see the real colors..Only amd igpu's do it.. Can you color calibrate and check. I have the MSI Alpha 15 which didn't display a certain violet in my pic..but after i turned off color temperature.. it was showing actual colors...BTW JARROD IF YOU STILL HAVE MSI ALPHA 15.. can you turn off the color temperature and do a display calibration and send the file.. Thanks I personally think you should address this amd color temperature issue in a video

I have asus professional dock, can I use it for display HDMI, Ethernet, laptop charging input, 2X usb for keyboard and mouse? If I connect this to back of the laptop and can use all these ports at a time? and still get laptop charging, high speed internet and high FPS on monitor?

I bought same laptop with rtx 3060 and ryzen 7 my temps are very bad. In turbo mode while playing warzone i get 86° gpu temp and 90° cpu temp. Please help
